When we handed out our 2008 NFL draft grades – each team got an incomplete — we mentioned that it makes more sense to go back and hand out grades from drafts three or four years ago. Several readers and commenters challenged us to rewind to 2004 or 2005 and do just that, but we were too lazy.
Still, the arrest on Sunday of the No. 4 overall pick in 2005 has prompted us to go back to the first round from that year and ponder the curious crop of busts that emerged in the first 32 picks. Let’s have a look:
1. Alex Smith, quarterback, 49ers: When the first overall pick is competing three years later with Shaun Hill and J.T. O’Sullivan for the starting job, that’s by definition a BUST.
2. Ronnie Brown, running back, Dolphins: After a so-so first year, Brown has been solid. A torn ACL derailed his opportunity to have a strong third year. Though he hasn’t lived up to the billing of the No. 2 overall pick, we’re not yet ready to call him a bust. (But we could be after 2008.)
3. Braylon Edwards, receiver, Browns: Edward is becoming one of the best receivers in the league. Clearly, not a bust.
4. Cedric Benson, running back, Bears: He’s been a disappointment on the field, and his arrest conjures memories of past incidents in college. Without question, he’s a BUST.
5. Cadillac Williams, running back, Buccaneers: Williams made a huge splash as a rookie, but can’t stay healthy. After rupturing a patellar tendon in 2007, he might not play again. If he does, he might never be the same. Based on his top-five selection, he’s a BUST.
6. Pacman Jones, cornerback, Titans: Do we even have to type the word?
7. Troy Williamson, receiver, Vikings: We once tried to throw Williamson a compliment, but he dropped that, too. BUST.
8. Antrel Rolle, cornerback, Cardinals: When a cornerback might be shifted to safety at only age 25, it’s not because he’s a great cornerback. BUST.
9. Carlos Rogers, cornerback, Redskins: He’s on the path to being declared a bust. We’ll give him one more year.
10. Mike Williams, receiver, Lions: Maybe he wouldn’t have been a BUST if the Lions had made him an offensive lineman.
11. DeMarcus Ware, linebacker, Cowboys: A 2006 Pro Bowl + a 2007 Pro Bowl = not a bust.
12. Shawne Merriman, linebacker, Chargers: He could still be a bust if he gets suspended again for steroids (or blown up on a regular basis by a pint-sized running back); for now, though, Merriman is clearly not a bust.
13. Jammal Brown, tackle, Saints: The Pro Bowler in 2006 slipped a bit last year, and the Saints were rumored to be shopping him. Still, he’s not a bust.
14. Thomas Davis, safety/linebacker, Panters: He’s not spectacular, but he started 16 games in 2007. Not a bust.
15. Derrick Johnson, linebacker, Chiefs: Johnson made a splash as a rookie and hasn’t taken it quite to the next level in two years since, but he’s not a bust.
16. Travis Johnson, defensive tackle, Texans: When the biggest hit of your career is one that you unknowingly put on a quarterback’s head with your knee, you might be a redneck. And a BUST.
We’ll do the back half of the round later. If we remember. For now, feel free to chime in on our thoughts regarding the first sixteen.

Calling Chucky’s Cadillac a bust goes a bit too far in my eyes. RBs are always a gamble. He clearly showed that he can perform. It’s simply idiotic to take a RB that high. I wouldn’t call the pick “wasted”.

Florio, you must not see many Skins games. If Troy Williamson played corner, he would be Carlos Rogers. Rogers shredded his knee in the same game that the Pats shredded the Skins. He likely won’t be ready for the start of the regular season, and therefore a non-factor for 2008 (not that he was much of a factor before that). Unless he goes Rod Woodson on us next year, he’s definitely a BUST!

You need to be a bit more consistent there, Mike. How can Ronnie Brown not be a bust, yet Cadillac is? Personally I dont believe either to be a bust, and I’m also not a fan of either team.

I agree with most of this. However I’m farther away from “bust” with Ronnie Brown. With the season he was beginning to have last year, he was looking like an elite back. I even remember Bellichick stating that he thought Brown was [in that span] the best in the league.
But true, we will see what 2008/9 brings.

Carlos Rogers was having a pretty good season as far as coverage goes in 2007.he still has brick hands though.
he deserves just as much benefit of a doubt as ronnie brown.
and how odd is this, all auburn players taken in the 1st round from that draft ended 2007 with knee injuries.Brown,Williams,Rogers,Campbell
jason campbell was lucky and only got a dislocated knee cap(no surgery)

And Eagles fans get all bent because we trade out of the first round. The union and the league need to look at this and do something about the guaranteed money these guys get paid because they could play in college. MLB does it right.

This draft class is the best argument for a rookie salary scale.

I think this sort of thing is a great idea. I haven’t seen this sort of thing. Perhaps we can finally get a picture of the kind of ‘talent’ that’s being drafted at different picks and see just how ‘worth it’ it is to pay out the high money. (Plus, you can get a good look at who the good scouting teams are).

Half of the first round players are busts. no wonder the owners are nervous they can spend 30 million or more to have someone sit on the bench or not even play. I would be willing to do that for 5 million.

To Smith’s credit, he was brought into one of the worst offensive situations in history. Four offensive coordinators in four years, no experience or talent at receiver, and an inconsistent (at best) offensive line. He’s gotten the shaft from Mike Nolan at every turn, since his first day in the league.

Well, I can start you off on the second half of the first round. #17 was David Pollack to the Bengals. Freak neck injury early in his second year, probably never going to play football again. Very sad.
BTW, you might think you’re being clever by handing out incomplete’s for this year’s draft. Personally, I respect people who are prepared to take a stand now and risk being proven wrong later. Handing out incomplete’s is just being a chicken.

Three seasons is still not enough time to be able to truly evaluate a QB. Alex Smith should be afforded at least this season to prove if he is worthy of the title. Joe Gibbs used to say it took 5 seasons to be able to truly evaluate a young QB, I believe a guy needs at least 25 starts in those 5 years. Considering Smith is with his 4th different offensive coordinator in 4 seasons, has endured a few injuries, has played for a rotten team, just the fact that he is still on the team is a minor victory. He’s had just over 25 starts (30) and had showed some promise in year 2 before he was derailed by injuries and losing Norv Turner as his OC. You have to give the guy this season before you declare him a bust. Heck, it took most of the guys in the NFL until their 4th or 5th year in college to become good players, what makes you think they can do it sooner against better competition?

It would be interesting to look at whether the player was a bust becasue of the team that drafted him, or he would be a bust with any team he would be with…like Alex Smith. would he have been more successful somewhere else

I’m not sure it’s fair to label C. Williams a BUST but not R. Brown. I’d rather have Ronnie Brown right now, too, over Cadillac Williams, but they aren’t THAT far apart that one’s a bust and one isn’t. They’ve both suffered serious injuries and have yet to come back from them. Give them another year or two.

THANK YOU!
Every post-draft piece is either handing out arbitrary grades, or taking the high-and-mighty route of saying you can’t properly grade a draft for 3 years….but then never grades the draft from three years ago!
Not much to argue with in your first 16 picks. Can’t wait to see how the back half shakes out.

Seeems to me that Phil Savage is doing the one thing that previouse regimes for the Browns failed to do . . . make great first round picks. Edwards and Thomas are pro-bowlers. And Wimbley has the potential if he can get some inside help to force QB’s deeper into the pocket. If they keep hitting on their first rounders and an occassionaly late rounder they should be competetive for the long haul. Based on what the Ravens have done since he left it seems clear who was actually the brains behind their successful drafts.

2005 was NOT the season to take a QB at #1 overall. The 49ers seriously reached for Alex Smith, and those that are not convinced that he’s a bust as a #1 overall pick by now will be convinced very shortly. He may turn out to be a serviceable NFL QB, but you’ve got to get more than a JAG at #1 overall. Nothing but his contract is keeping him with the 49ers. They gave him $24 million in guaranteed money on a six year contract! BUST.

First of all, Brown’s not a bust at all. You can’t fault him for being the No. 2 pick in a really crappy draft class. Backs don’t usually go that high, and the fact that three backs went on the Top 5 shows just how poor a draft class it was. But Brown has been damn good and has only had one knee injury and one freak injury. He’s still been great and was leading the league in offensive yardage before he went down in Week 7 last year. He is the total opposite of a bust.
Antrel Rolle’s also damn good. If you think he’s a bust you don’t know football.

Um yeah… I hear the arguments, but Alex Smith is a bust. Having low grade receivers around you doesn’t mean you lose the ability to hit the open man. I’ve seen him live and it wasn’t pretty. Martz needs to perform a miracle of Helen Keller proportions in SF this year for Smith to edge out Shaun Hill.

I never liked calling a guy a “bust” just because he couldn’t stay healthy. He’s not a success, thats for sure, but scouts don’t have crystal balls to see whose going to get hit by the freak injury.
