Kidekk, a Cheerleader, says: "This is going a bit overboard. If he commits any of the crimes that you mentioned and is caught, he will go to jail. "

I would argue that it's very presumptuous to assume any NFL player goes to jail for ANY crime (think OJ)...like it or not, this is a sign of our times....

Yup, East Bay Ray, it is an opinion. I believe a well founded one, though. Not that stats and empirical data mean everything or anything like that, but with more around him, Emmit Smith averaged 4.2 yards per carry to Barry Sanders' 5.0 (with his size!). And Jim Brown averaged 5.2 yards per carry, which is ridiculous. Of course, that might be comparable to Wilt Chamberlain's statistics ... meaning, take NOTHING away from those two, but those were literally physical specimens that were well ahead of their era and that could have played now, with their same size, and still have am immense impact.

I think just about anyone, though clearly not everyone (i.e. you), would agree that Walter Payton was a better football player than Emmitt Smith. Just as a pure football player, and yeah, that 4.4 average yards per carry compared to Emmit's 4.2.

"So . . . rape, DUI, drug possession/use/sale, bank robbery, burglary, domestic assault, random assault, dog fighting, gambling, providing alcohol to minors, insider trading, and any other crime that falls short of “killing anybody, getting anybody shot at and going to jail” is fine and dandy with Emmitt."

Consider the source. Emmitt's bud Michael Irvin copped to most of these "minor" offenses, without getting debacled out of his monstrously high-paying pro football career - and without which his career prospects would have topped out at or near minimum wage.

Pacman, he is no diff, right? So Emmitt is saying (loosely translated, of necessity), hey, help a brutha out - he ain't got no quarrel with bruthas doin' fun stuff that is banned by them oppressive uptight-whitey-type laws - 'ceptin' in Dallas, where them laws don't get much applied if you got a star on your helmet - "as long as you’re out here on the practice field performing like you’re supposed to...."

Can't agree with Emmitt, and I don't think the Commish does either, but you can't say he's being inconsistent.

Someone get Vox a ball of cotton and a string because he might start bleeding soon.

I just hope he doesn't watch Beaches today. That would make him extra emotional.

East Bay Ray, you ask, "Is Emmitt the best RB ever?"

No, he is not.

Barry Sanders. Jim Brown. Walter Payton. These running backs are all better than Emmitt Smith.

Emmit is still great and deserves all of his accomplishments -- but he is not the greatest. Or second greatest. Or third greatest.

Vox, you are correct that Emmitt is "one of the good guys". But, he is being paid to speak on television and is comically awful at it. This makes him fair game.

Where Florio is really wrong about Emmitt is in not placing him in the conversation of the top handful of RBs ever. Is Emmitt the best RB ever? I don't know. It's tough to compare guys from different eras and teams. But I do know this: with 3 Super Bowl rings, the most rushing yards and rushing TDs in history, a league MVP and Super Bowl MVP, he is the most accomplished RB ever, and isn't that what counts?

This is going a bit overboard. If he commits any of the crimes that you mentioned and is caught, he will go to jail. Unless he said, "If you are going to do something, make sure you're not caught and there are no witnesses present or left standing," then it would be all right to pick on him. Let's be honest, we have to throw semantics out the window when listening to some athletes speak.

Oh yes, please, let's continue picking on one of the true good guys of the NFL because of the way he talks and the fact that the "world leader" gave him a job in spite of it. Yes, let's take his words out of context and do our best to tear him down by making it seem that he said something that he really didn't, because only in America can that be considered an honorable profession and only in America can a supposedly highly educated two-bit hack of a writer make a buck off of something like that. You rag on Emmitt's speech patterns more than you rag on Pacman's exploits.
