The Philadelphia Daily News has a lengthy (and excellent) story about the shooting outside the aptly-named “Playmakers” bar in North Philadelphia, which is owned by Colts receiver (and Philly native) Marvin Harrison.
Here are some things we didn’t previously know (or previously hadn’t noticed):
The victim of the shooting had been in a fistfight with Harrison moments before the shooting. The victim had been kicked out of the bar two weeks earlier, and had bickered with Harrison ever since.
The victim initially concealed the fact that he’d been shot. He later admitted it, but declined to identify the shooter.
As to those reports of the Belgian gun being found in a bucket, the Daily News writes that Harrison handed the gun over.
Harrison spent four hours being interviewed at the police station, with his attorney present. Harrison acknowledged being involved in a fight with the victim, but denied any involvement in the shooting.
Detectives are searching for another man who called and claimed that he’d been shot by Harrison.
Five of the six shell casings found at the scene came from Harrison’s gun.
Though police have taken great pains to explain that there currently is no suspect, the Daily News makes clear that Harrison is a target of the investigation.
And why wouldn’t he be? It was his gun that had been fired, and the gun was in his possession the next day. Unless Harrison is in a position to implicate someone else (or if there’s someone else who’ll take the fall), it’s all pointing to him at this point.

If you follow the link to the FN 5.7 you find this quote at the bottom:
“The Five-seveN is available from FN for government or law enforcement sales only.”
So … how come an NFL WR owns one?

Pigboy5177,
It is still hard to say that Harrison was exercising self-defense when by reports he followed the guy outside (indicating that he could actually be the agressor in this incident, not the victim defending himself) also it argue that he was shooting until the threat was neutralized when the other guy apparently fired one shot to Harrison’s five. That indicates that the other guy probably was not posing a threat any more.
I know people want to believe that Harrison coudn’t do something like this, but based on the evidence we know so far, it doesn’t look a case of self defense at all if he was the shooter. If anything, the other guy seems to have a better case for self defense.

I like how all this talk about “innocent until proven guilty” just because he’s a Colt and his name is Marvin Harrison. If this was Marvin Smith of the Cincinnati Bengals, everyone would be ripping this guy to shreds. You all are hypocrites…

And before you declare him a person exercising his rights as an American citizen, shouldn’t we find out if the right he was exercising was self defense or attempted murder.
Harrison may not have been the trigger man at all. His only crime might have been to own the gun and conceil the crime until the police came calling.
But if he is the triggerman, don’t automatically assume he was just defending himself. He did chase after the guy he just got into a fist fight with a gun on his person. He could have gone out of the bar with the intent to shoot the guy. No one thought OJ had it in him to kill his ex-wife and her friend either.
Based on the facts we know, it doesn’t look like a case of self-defense. The only evidence we have seen that argues that is that he is Marvin Harrison the famous NFL player. Everything else seems to point to him being the aggressor. There are still plenty of facts to come out I am sure, but it ain’t looking too good for Harrison at this point.
As for the police not arresting Harrison, they are not going to do that until they have their ducks in a row. They don’t want another OJ trial where the police’s supposive rush to judgement and mishandling of the evidence got OJ to walk on two murders. If Harrison is the primary suspect, they are going to make sure they have a case.

I never thought that seeing Marvin Harrison on the Turd Watch would even be a possibility. Now it looks like that could happen. What’s next, Eli Manning dealing crack?

While it’s all well and good that some people want to defend Harrison’s actions as being in self-defense, there are a few key issues that jump out, at least in my mind …
#1 - Harrison followed the man after he left the bar, if anything, Harrison was the aggressor in this matter.
#2 - And this one is a biggee to me … If it truly was self-defense, why wouldn’t a prominent public figure like Marvin Harrison immediately contact his attorney and head straight to the police station to file a report instead of looking for somewhere to hide the gun he just used to shoot someone?
#3 - Maybe it’s just me, but I have a hard time buying self-defense if you fire 5 shots at someone.

I also live in Pennsylvania and will tell you that handguns need to be registered. You also need to have a CCW license to carry concealed.
It seems like there is a lot of conflicting information coming out here so no one really knows what happened at this point. Nobody should be saying that it was attempted murder on Harrison’s part just yet. It could be but it could also have been self defense. The number of shots fired really has nothing to do with it

People are saying “it’s beyond belief that he could be involved in something like this.” — isn’t that the same type of thing people were saying about O.J. back in June of ‘94 ???
Not saying this is like that, but, really, who knows what goes on behind closed doors ?

Ronry, atheletes “think they can get away with anything” because people bend over backwards for them from the time they are kids and let them do just that
They’re told constantly how great they are. They get special treatment in highschool and college. Coaches and admin pressure their teachers/profs to keep them eliglble. People do their work for them. People give them cars. People give them jewelry. When they go out they don’t have to pay. Women throw themselves at them. They’re treated like royalty and don’t live in the real world. Then something like this happens and we’re all stunned. I’m actually stunned that so many of them DON’T get in big trouble.

From Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On:
Mother, mother
There’s too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There’s far too many of you dying
You know we’ve got to find a way
To bring some lovin’ here today - Ya
(End Marvin Gaye’s lyrics)

Well I grew up in TX a long time ago, and imho TX has the best gun laws. I dont care what communized yankees say about it.
But, even so, TX laws and the interpretations thereof are not perfect. As my aged mother had told me, if you shoot the break-in perp on the front porch or sidewalk you better drag him inside (clean up the blood). Because if he has left the premises, (read: is back on the porch or never left it) once you shoot him if he has left, you will be charged, not the perp, if he survives.
Once Marvin was sure the perp had left, he should have let it go. He is a celebrity, he can call the cops and expect better service than some people.
Doesnt sound like a nice neighborhood to have a bar in…

Wow - amazing that some people seem to be licking their chops to declare (or imply) that Marvin isn’t the person he portrays himself to be. At least wait until the investigation is complete and there are more definitive accounts of what exactly happened.
But this is the site that has managed to make a pariah out of Tony Dungy.

I’m really sick of everyone justifying athletes carrying guns…
The 2nd ammendment is one of the most improperly quoted documents of ALL TIME. READ IT. ALL OF IT. Yes, you have the right to bear arms… in the context of a mellitia, protecting your COUNTRY. NOT a bar, house, car, or whatever material possision you prize.

Garret, you are absolutely wrong.
First, what the Constitution says is irrelevant anyway since the source of our rights is not some piece of paper but rather the mere fact of our existence as human beings–and as the eminent 20th-century Russian-American philosopher Ayn Rand proved clearly and conclusively, we do indeed have the right to own ANY DAMN THING WE PLEASE.
In the case of guns, since the whole point of civilian weapons ownership is to ensure that the populace can mount an effective revolt against the government should it ever become necessary. Given that, then, ANY government restriction on private ownership of ANY type of weapon is illegitimate and absurd.
Finally, the Constitution, irrelevant though it is, nonetheless is referring to an individual right. The clause “…of a FREE state” makes it clear that the intent is to make sure it remains a FREE state, which means revolting against the domestic government if need be.

A couple of corrections for the record for those that are interested.
1) An FN 5.7 is “capable” of shooting armor peircing rounds but those rounds are only available to police and military.
2) This is a very nice gun and cost aroun $1500 brand new. Not the Thousands of dollars that folks have been speculating
3) IT IS NOT A 50 cal. as other posters have said it is very small. The odd thing about a 5.7 is that it looks an awful lot like a rifle cartridge becaused the brass is necked down to the bullet. I am looking at one sitting on my desk right now and it kind of has the shape of an Rocket.
4) My understanding is that Harrison has a Concealed Weapons Permit and IF, and I say IF the laws are similar to Florida, Harrison has ”
NO DUTY TO RETREAT” if he feels threatened or if he feels another persons is threatened he is permitted to meet force with force, including deadly force.
So, to be honest I think it is a no brainer that this his his gun. FN 5.7 are readily available but not by the average criminal, typically a gun collecter, which harrison is would buy this gun. My speculation is that he questioning of Harrison is to determine if he abused his right to meet force with force. He may have shot the gun and may have even hit the guy but that doesnt make it a criminal act.

Garret, you’re a moron. The right to keep and bear arms is also the right to protect ones property and way of life.
Being a gun owner from Maryland, we’ve got pretty strict gun laws here, however, PA’s are much “looser”. They’re allowed to carry and Marylanders aren’t at all!
As far as the M.H. shooting fiasco, if the guy was retreating he should have left it at that. The important part here that a lot of you are missing is the fact that he shot a 2yr old, yes it was accidental, but he still shot a 2yr old, he will in my mind, be brought on charges of that, no doubt about it. When you buy your first fire-arm you’re reminded that the shots you fire are your responsibility, no matter if they hit a tree, or a building or are in self defense.
Just some food for thought.
