In the NFL, the word “playmakers” always seems to cause controversy, whether it’s the title of an ESPN show that infuriates the league office or the name of a bar owned by an NFL player being investigated in a shooting.

When Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said the team needed to add more playmakers, it caused a mini-controversy because it was widely regarded as a plea for a better wide receiving corps than the one he has now.  But at the team’s minicamp practice today, McNabb insisted that’s not what he meant.

I said playmakers. I didn’t say receivers,” McNabb said.  “I said guys that could come in and make plays for us.”

But did the Eagles, in McNabb’s view, get those playmakers?  Asked if he was disappointed the Eagles haven’t added the elite wide receiver they’ve been lacking since Terrell Owens was shipped out of town, McNabb stressed that he’s not the arbiter of such things.

“It’s not about me being me disappointed or excited,” McNabb said.  “The guys that we have here made plays for us last year. People forget that Kevin Curtis had over 1,000 yards receiving.  That’s the second time that’s happened since I’ve been here, the first was obviously T.O.”

Whether or not McNabb thinks the team has all the playmakers it needs, coach Andy Reid thinks all the pieces are in place.

“I think with the players I have in the room, that we are ready to compete for a championship,” Reid said.  “It’s that simple.”
