Before free agency opened, the Eagles vehemently denied rumors of any interest in trading cornerback Lito Sheppard, presumably to avoid undermining efforts to sign former Pats cornerback Asante Samuel once the clock struck midnight on February 29.
After Samuel was signed and sealed, the Eagles began to shop Sheppard.
But they weren’t able to get an offer they’d accept before the draft or during it. Since then, there have been rumors of interest on the part of the Jaguars, but nothing serious.
And now the process takes on a greater degree of risk for the Eagles as the team convenes for a mandatory minicamp. If Sheppard tears an ACL or pops an Achilles’ tendon, the Eagles are on the hook for his $2 million base salary.
The other problem is that Sheppard’s future trade value would plummet if he were to suffer a serious injury in the short term. Come 2009, other teams would be less inclined to give up what they’d be inclined to offer right now if they’re getting a player who has yet to prove that he can still perform at a high level post-injury.
There’s also a chance that Sheppard will boycott the mandatory camp, but doing so would result in a per-day fine of more than $14,000, and also would subject him to a partial signing bonus forfeiture. As we understand it, Sheppard will attend and participate fully.
And so the Eagles will have to let him participate, and likewise they will bear the risk on an injury derailing any effort to move Sheppard for maximum value.

Lito earns my respect for being Mr. Invisible during this whole ordeal. He hasn’t griped. He hasn’t manipulated the media to steer a trade to specific teams. Personally, I think the Eagles would be smart to keep him this year since they obviously haven’t seen a trade offer they can agree to. But they hafta be okay with the possibility of getting nothing in return after this season. I can’t see how they are a better team in 2008 without him, though.

3 great cb’s in this nfl is something no other team has. tons of 3 receiver sets. Eagles would have great matchups. Absolutely keep lito. We will be fine at wr and have enough draft choices for next year. Lito has beeen a tremendous and loyal philadelphia eagle.

What about if another corner suffers acl and then Lito’s value goes up. It’s a throw of the dice either way but you are better off when you are holding the talent.

The only way Lito is going to be a free agent next year is if he gets cut, which means that there will be no compensatory pick. Learn the rules

The Eagles will not trade Lito Shepard unless they get value in return. That means a first round pick or a second and a fourth. The other option would be a receiver like Chad Johnson, Mike Williams or Anquan Bolden. In the case of Williams and Boldin your dealing with losing organizations run by village idiots. Both teams need a great corner but both teams seem think that they can keep and pay two number one receivers. Chad Johnson is eliminated because Reid doesn’t want to deal with another receiver who refers to himself in the third person. When healthy Lito is one of the top corners in the league and far better then anybody in this years draft.

@Eaglescout:
Mike Williams? Surely he can be had for less than Lito. But while we’re at it, why not pick up Charlie Rogers too!

As long as Joe Banner has a stranglehold on this team there will be no change. Its all about beating the players and their agents in negotiations, not winning a Super Bowl. In Joe’s world there is no “win win” deal.
