Before free agency opened, the Eagles vehemently denied rumors of any interest in trading cornerback Lito Sheppard, presumably to avoid undermining efforts to sign former Pats cornerback Asante Samuel once the clock struck midnight on February 29.
After Samuel was signed and sealed, the Eagles began to shop Sheppard.
But they weren’t able to get an offer they’d accept before the draft or during it. Since then, there have been rumors of interest on the part of the Jaguars, but nothing serious.
And now the process takes on a greater degree of risk for the Eagles as the team convenes for a mandatory minicamp. If Sheppard tears an ACL or pops an Achilles’ tendon, the Eagles are on the hook for his $2 million base salary.
The other problem is that Sheppard’s future trade value would plummet if he were to suffer a serious injury in the short term. Come 2009, other teams would be less inclined to give up what they’d be inclined to offer right now if they’re getting a player who has yet to prove that he can still perform at a high level post-injury.
There’s also a chance that Sheppard will boycott the mandatory camp, but doing so would result in a per-day fine of more than $14,000, and also would subject him to a partial signing bonus forfeiture. As we understand it, Sheppard will attend and participate fully.
And so the Eagles will have to let him participate, and likewise they will bear the risk on an injury derailing any effort to move Sheppard for maximum value.

Time for the Eagles to cut bait and get what they can. Send him to the Jaguars for a 6th round pick.

florio - one option you forgotis that he could come back, participate, the eagles could throw him a bone of a million or two to placate him this year, or even to redo his contract to make it more palatable for lito. he could then have a good season and increase his trade value. that too is an option. reid has already stated that he will talk to lito about his deal soon. a new deal in place would make sheppard easier to move as well.

How about a Lito for Jason Taylor trade? This would vastly improve the Eagles pass rush and give the Fins a decent CB. Sure JT is a bit old, but he can still put up about 10 sacks a year, and its not like McNabb is getting any younger. With Romo, Manning, and Campbell being young guys on the rise, the future is now for the Eagles.

I still think the Eagles’ best option to win now is to keep Lito…unless they can get their hands on a big name receiver for him (which I highly doubt). With the receivers they face 6 times in a year within the division courtesy of NYG, WAS, and DAL, it would be great to have 3 CBs of that caliber to shut down their passing games. I know it’s a pipedream but I would still love to see how Sheldon Brown would fair at FS and then slide Dawk to SS and have him play the box while Lito and Asante played the outside. The Eagles still have cap room where they could negotiate a new contract with Lito to make him happy (even though I don’t agree with it because he signed his extension a couple years ago). With the salary cap probably scrapped a couple years from now, why can’t they throw together a contract that pays him an average salary then blows up once the cap is out the window–the same way they set it up with Asante. With the new pass-happy NFL the Eagles would put themselves in an extremely enviable situation with a secondary like that. Do I think Lito will be on the team come Week 1? No, but I think it would be a huge boost to the team to have him.

um….. I’m no genius and all but could you explain to me how this is a real gamble for the eagles. The last time i checked a pro bowl cornerback goes for a little more then the salary lito is getting this year. Personally the gamble is on lito sheppard if he shows because he is the one who wants the big dollars. Losing 2 mil on lito would be no worse then all the money thats been lost on jerome mcdougle or even jevan kearse. Not to mention the eagles are one of the richiest franchises in sports so i think they could afford a two mill cap hit.

Why not move Sheppard to a safety spot? Dawkins, Sheppard, Samuel, and Brown? What a secondary.

Unless you are getting Boldin, Roy Williams, or Ocho Cinco, or a 1st RD Pick - you hold on to him. If they can get him and Samuel as their 2 corners, Johnson will be able to tee off on the QB with blitzes from every angle. Even if teams come with 3 WR’s you have Sheppard, Samuel and Hood (coverted to strong safety) that all cover like corners allowing the DL/LB to play agressive.

mike.. you’re wrong…stakes don’t increase
The Eagles are far under the cap and taking a 2 million cap hit isnt a big deal..
Even if Lito tears his acl… he is out a year,.. comes back next year and he has to stay on the eagles at his low salary in 2009 because nobody would pay him more or want him off injury
actualy hif he tore his acl i think it would be a plus.. (not that i want him to)… the eagles would get a cheap quality backup cb in 2009

to fbfan: i think its obvious what team you like. Lito sheppard will not get cut nor traded for anything lower then a first round pick. The guy is a shut down corner, former first round pick, 2 time pro bowler, and he is only 26. Yeah he has had little nagging injuries but nothing substantial. The worst he had was a lis franc injury. He is a character guy. Deanglo hall got traded for a second because he can be a mouth in the locker and the falcons are desperate. The eagles know that with him they have easily the best secondary in football. So their are not going to sell him for less then a top end receiver or a first round pick

A new deal in place would make it harder for the Eagles to move him. The new deal would likely include a huge signing bonus (10-15 million plus). There is no way the Eagles pay him that for one year only to trade him and take the increased salary cap hit.

You can’t think like that. His trade value plummeting? McNabbs going out and participating too and HIS trade value is much more important to the Eagles than Lito’s is. Lito WILL NOT make the 53 man roster. Write it down. He DEFINITELY will not get more money from the birds since that would allow Sheldon Brown and anyone else the leverage they need to step up and ask for a raise. Every Eagles fan with a clue knows that Lito milked his injury last year and chose to take his merry ol’ time coming back from injury. He was unhappy with his contract last season. Just because he didn’t say, “For Who, For What?” doesn’t mean he wasn’t implying it. Actions speak louder than words and this is a prime example. And who the hell cares about the Eagles getting stuck with his 2 million base salary… Really, 2 million? Hell we ate half of McDougles contract and he only gave us one memorable play when he sacked Eli…

Convert Hood to safety? As in Rod Hood of the Arizona Cardinals for whom we received a compensatory pick in the 6th round in this years draft bc he left last year? Hell why not just use Clinton Hart and Michael Lewis in the secondary this year as well….

Anyone can get injured so that observation is irrelevant. The eagles can’t and wont force himt o sit out because then his trade value plummets. If a team is bent on keeping a player (fitz with the cardinals) offers go up. If everyone knows the team does want the player (Eagles and TO) offer goes down. People know the eagles are shopping lito but by not accepting trash and letting him participate the eagles are showing that they will keep Lito without as good offer.
The reason the eagles could not get the offer they wanted for lito was because of his contract demands. These demands are high not because of lack of talent but bc of injury history. Therefore it is in Lito’s best interest to participate and make it easier for the eagles to sell the idea that they will keep him. Thus preventing a drop in his value if he sat out.
If teams still dont trade for him he’ll have to play. Florio reported himself that some gms said lito would have to play another year with them to get a contract even if they did trade for him. It’s in lito’s best interest to prove he’s healthy so that a team will actually trade for him in the offseason. With four years left on his contract and being only 27 no way the eagles cut him.

Lito Sheppard didnt get traded because he wants a new contract in the range of Asante Samuel. No one believes he is an 8M dollar CB. Thats why the Eagles arent getting anything close to what his value is. If a team could sign Lito to a 5 year 10M dollar deal, the Eagles would get a 1st round pick.
If Lito plays for his contract this year, teams can sign him next year for nothing. Thats why his value is so low in the open market.

He will not get cut period. There is nothing other than a #1 WR at this point which would make trading him a good bet by the Eagles. I wouldn’t take another #1 next year. We have two already and it doesn’t help us at all this year. The only way he gets traded for picks is if they already have a deal in place for a WR which is highly unlikely. Trading him now just weakens your CB position since they didn’t draft anyone who’ll step in this year and help.
OMG they could be on the hook for 2 mil in salary. Ha! You’re kidding right? That’s a big deal now? What year did we travel back to that 2 mil in salary is a huge number? Its up to Sheppard to come in and stay healthy to get a new deal either with the Eagles or with someone else. I think its really clear that they didn’t get fair value offers in return because Lito is not worth as much as Lito thinks he is.
Heck if possible I’d write into his contract incentives for this year so that if he plays so many games, makes so many interceptions, the team makes the playoffs etc… he’ll get more money as a result. It’s up to Lito to increase his value.
Having 3 pro-bowl caliber CBs isn’t a bad thing. I’d even try and see if we could get Brown some playing time at safety to keep him on the field more.
Seeing the teams in the NFC East that have added more WRs and will likely be trying to adopt a more spread offense more high quality Cbs will be necessary. They’ll also be playing teams like Arizona and the Bengals this year both likely to try to use 3 or more WR sets.

gallaghedj311 -If you think Lito was milking the injury last year then you dont pay attention. Lito is one of the standup players on the Eagles, he has not whinned, bitched or complained about the situation.
I would like the eagles to retain Lito, move Brown to safty, and then have a dominant secondary. If the Eagles gave him and brown a little more coin to keep them both.

LITO WILL NOT BE ON THE TEAM!
What is he gonna split time with Sheldon? They are not moving Sheldon to safety so unless they convert him to a wide receiver there is no use for lito. The Eagles want other GMs to think that they will use him but there is not a chance in hell that he will be on this team come training camp. It would be too awkward.

If the Eagles can get Lito to play this year under his current deal, the Eagles should keep him. Then let Lito go to FA next year and pick up the 3rd or 4th round comp draft pick they will get in 2010.

Lito IS a stand up guy - he’s been too much of a professional to screw up the team (unlike a certain WR we all know). As for some of the previous posts, Lito’s already signed through 2010 (maybe 2011 - I’m not sure) so it’s not like he gets to leave next year either and he’s way too light to be moved to safety. God, he get’s banged up every year playing corner, how long would he last trying to tackle TE’s?
The fact that Lito isn’t happy with his contract isn’t even the biggest concern: Westbrook is much more unhappy with his situation. If BW were to go all T.O. on us, we may as well forget the season. Fortunately, I think Brian’s also a professional, and will use his anger as a motivation rather than a distraction. Hopefully, the Eagles won’t go into the bunker mentality and realize that sometimes you DO need to throw a few extra dollars around to keep your best players happy.

As a ’skins fan, I’d love to see him go. Preferably to the AFC! But for only two million? That is cheap to have a player of his caliber on the field. And as others have stated, by appearing to really want to keep him should prevent other teams from thinking a lowball offer will work.

Believe me, Lito could’ve and should’ve played much more than he did last year. If YOU paid attention, then you would’ve heard the many many interveiws with players and former players who are still close to the team that have confirmed that Lito was in no hurry to come back from his injury because of his unhappiness with his contract. I never said he wasn’t a stand up guy. But since he chose to be lackadaisical about returning last year, he’s paying the price now since he’s being labeled as injury prone and it’s costing him that huge contract that he wants. Get a clue.
