In response to media reports that the Oakland Raiders are seriously considering hiring Rams front-office employee Samir Suleiman to handle cap compliance and contract negotiation, a source tells us that the Raiders have not talked to Suleiman about working for the team, and that he is not expected to be pursued for a position.
So what in the heck is going on?
Apart from the fact that the San Francisco Chronicle has reported that Suleiman is being considered for the job, Suleiman himself was quoted as expressing optimism that he’ll be hired. “It’s a great organization, so anybody would be lucky to work for them,” Suleiman said.
It could be that Suleiman is trying to leverage the Rams into giving him a better deal, or that he’s trying to spark interest from another team, like the Saints, who have yet to replace Russ Ball, who is now working for the Packers.
Regardless, it’s bizarre that Suleiman would be linked to a position in Oakland. Especially since there’s also no indication that the Raiders are even looking to hire someone to supplement (or to replace) the cap and contracts structure they currently have in place.

I love it how the media just jumps on anything that pertains to Oakland. How many of these have been correct in the past year besides Al’s infatuation with McFadden?? I can probably count them on one hand..

When this popped up yesterday it just looked like to me that Samir was just giving a cookie-cutter answer, since no exec of one club would want to sound like he was critical of another club. He says nothing about being contacted about a job, or about wanting to go to the Raiders. I don’t think it sounds at all like he’s “expressing optimism” (as Florio puts it) that he’ll be hired by Oakland. His response was a much more PC answer than “What a load of crap! Why would I want to work in such a messed up situation?!”
It’s like when the top guys in the draft are asked (before the draft) if they have any preference on which team picks them. Most of them (except Eli) have the same kind of response - “oh, they’re all great organizations, it would be an honor to play for them.” That’s all Samir did, gave the same kind of answer. It’s a non-story. The Chronicle is blowing smoke again.

I had a feeling the original report was not legit. I couldn’t fathom my Raiders getting rid of the cap consulting team of Dewey, Cheatem & Howe. Although last year with JaMarcus it seemed like the job got subcontracted to Moe Howard and his associates Larry and Curly.

Oakland has a cap structure? Could have fooled me - I thought they gave D. Hall, Javon Walker, and Tommy Kelly a combined 2.3 billion dollars in guaranteed money for the 2008 season (give or take a few dollars).

I’m optimistic that I’ll be playing for the Oakland Raiders. “It’s a great organization, so anybody would be lucky to play for them,” I said.
