We continue to look at last weekend’s NFL draft by looking at the teams that we think came out of it in worse position than they could have been.
We know, we know — no one really knows at this point, and no one will know until these kids starting playing. But that doesn’t stop anyone else from spouting off with the opinion, so it won’t stop us, either.
Here it is:

Yeah if I was the Packers, I sure as hell wouldn’t want that HOFer to show his face on the feild again. I’d be putting a hit on Aaron Rodgers’ patellas and labrums like an old wild west wanted poster. As much as people say that its a distraction and this and that, an old Farve is better than a young questionable Rodgers.

an old Majkowski is better than a young questionable Favre.
How about letting the guy play first. Reasonable fans aren’t expect Rodgers to be the next Favre but let’s see what the guy has before riding him out of town on a rail.

I would say that keeping Favre away is not the ONLY reason to draft Flynn AND Brohm. Maybe they want to, you know, develop a young quarterback.

Relax, Florio. The Steelers still have all of their tackles from last season, plus Tony Hills. The problem that lead to 47 sacks was really with the interior of the line, anyway. Hopefully that can be overcome with a new center and a year of coaching.
Trading up would have been bad news because we only had 6 picks to start the draft. Mendenhall was a great value pick, and people were stretching for OT. From Otah on we weren’t dealing with first round talent anymore. Trading up high enough to get Williams or Cherilius would have left us with barely any picks this year, and cut into next year when we might actually have pressing needs.
Besides, Parker is coming off a pretty bad injury. I’m not adverse to having some insurance in case Fast Willie ain’t so fast anymore.

Unless they sign a veteran QB and move Matt Flynn to the practice squad, the Packers could have two rookies and a 4th-year starter with experience in only one meaningful game (a loss). Zero career starts between the group. So much for a veteran’s presence to help Rogers when he comes to the sideline after seeing a new sophisticated wrinkle to to a defense that he has not seen before.
And one more QB-related draft move by the Packers. In their quest to always move down a to get more draft picks, they traded with the Vikings allowing their division rival to pick John David Booty. This was a HUGE insurance policy for the Vikings future. Now if Tavaris Jackson doesn’t take the next step (he’s just two years out of Div 1AA, and this is is first offseason to study game film of himself against NFL defenses), they can go to Gus Ferotte for this season and start prepping Booty to take over next year. Without drafting Booty, the Vikings may have been forced to stick it out with Jackson if he doesn’t show the improvement that’s expected in his 3rd year.
And what did the Packers get for allowing the Vikings to draft Booty? The 7th-round pick used on Flynn. So now the Packers are in a situation of keeping him as the No. 3 QB, assuring no veteran leadership at the QB position, or risk waiving him to sign for the practice squad, and hoping someone else doesn’t sign him (a la the Browns signing Derek Anderson before the Ravens could add him to the practice squad). That would then mean the Packers allowed a division rival to improve at QB with nothing to show in return.

Good move by the Packers to draft 2 young QB’s and I do believe that this was designed to shut the door on Favre.
He did have a very good season, but there’s no telling what would happen next year if he played. As the season wore on, it became increasingly difficult for him play to that level. I watched every snap this year and the young talent really came through for him. I think the biggest factor is the cold weather here in Green Bay. He just can’t play in it anymore. That was evident against the Giants. When you’re young like Manning, it doesn’t bother you, but when your 38 it does. The team has to move on………I’d rather have it his way than through injury.

Henry,
It’s rather unreasonable to think that the majority of Packer fans are anything but unreasonable themselves. Go ask Broncos fans about the expectations of “the next quarterback”. What? 10 years and 3 QB’s later and people still can’t shake the need to compare (and contrast) with Elway. But, I agree. Give the kid a chance! He’ll soon find that chances (and patience) from the fans will soon be in short supply.

Good point Jon Snow. They’re not called Green Bay Favre fans for no reason.

Back in the beginning of the 1992 season, the Packers had a fragile starting QB, a 2nd year QB with 4 regular season passes(0 comp, 2 ints), and a 9th round rookie. That ended up working out pretty well, didn’t it?
I don’t think TT’s drafting of two QB’s really has anything to do with Favre. Obviously, the media likes to sell that notion because it makes for an interesting story. It’s a much better story to associate the drafting of QB’s with Favre, rather than bring up the fact that the only other QB’s on the Packers’ roster before the draft were Jerry Babb and Dalton Bell, who have since been released, and the only veteran out there to sign is Daunte Culpepper, who is a terrible fit for GB. Why not draft two talented guys that they like, especially considering Mike McCarthy is one of the best, if not the best QB mentor in the game right now?
Who cares if Rodgers has a veteran behind him or not to tell him what to do? That’s what coaches are for.

I’m stunned nobody is talking about the Carolina Panthers as the huge losers from this year’s draft.
Its not that the players Carolina got were bad. Stewart and Otah will likely be very good players.
But Carolina is a team that desperately needs a QB. Not only did they not take an early-round QB, but they traded their first round pick from next year–insuring that, barring a big package to trade up, they won’t be able to take a top-tier QB from next year’s draft.

I agree about Carolina. I’m not worried so much about QB, but I’m extremely skeptical about trading away next year’s first rounder. I could have lived without a turf toe RB; they could have traded down, still taken Otah, and kept some picks in the process. Dubious, I say, dubious indeed. Prove me wrong, Stewart!

This Steelers OL thing is ridiculous. First, they have 4 OTs returning on the roster. Marvel Smith, the starter at LT has played in 1 Pro Bowl & has a $6.6 million cap figure for 2008. Max Starks & Willie Colon have each started at RT & Starks just signed for $6.9 million for 2008. Now you expect them to trade up and pay another T 1st round money? No way!
Second, they only had 6 picks! Overall depth, not quality of starters is the Steelers’ biggest weakness. They needed all the picks they had & more.
I would have picked someone else in the 1st or tried to trade down with someone who may have been interested in Mendenhall, but trading up for an OT would have been the wrong thing to do.
Lastly, their 4th round pick, Tony Hills, was yet another OT who was projected to be picked in the 1st round until he broke his leg late in the season. He may be the most athletic of the OTs available this year. The Steelers got tremendous value with him. He will be starting within 2 years. I would’ve liked to see them pick an OG, but they played it perfectly at OT.
