The 'tests' don't account for variables such as the magazine having been loaded with fewer rounds than it was capable of holding or that some magazines don't actually hold the number of rounds they claim to hold. A better 'test' would be to count the number of shell casing found at the scene or, better yet, find the bullets fired by the shooter. If it really was a .50 then the bullet holes in buildings and such shouldn't be too hard to find. 5.7mm holes, on the other hand, would be much harder to spot. I wouldn't be at all surprised to find that Indiana has some version of the Castle Defense laws that have taken hold in large swaths of Red State America. He'd still be pretty much screwed if he indeed was the shooter because he would have left the scene of a crime--the one he'd have to claim was being carried out against him. He could further claim that he left because he was afraid of something the guy with the hole in the hand might do to him but that wouldn't justify not reporting it when he was no longer being threatened or lying to cops about the location of the firearm that was used.
