On the surface, the recent influx of receivers in Cincinnati appears to be an effort to prepare for the possibility of life without Chad Johnson and, possibly in time, T.J. Houshmandzadeh.
But coach Marvin Lewis says that the devotion of three draft picks to wideouts is all about getting more wideouts on the field.
“It says we want to run the football,” coach Marvin Lewis said. “We don’t want [enemy defenses] to cram up on us at the line of scrimmage with only two wide receivers. You need to have some speed or that field gets pretty tight out there.
“I want to keep teams from tightening up on us.”
So the plan is, apparently, to put three or four receivers on the field, presumably at all times, in order to create a spread-style attack that draws defensive backs out of the box.
That very well might be true, but we think that the implicit message in this is that Lewis is planning for 2008 as if Johnson won’t be on the field, because Lewis wouldn’t need an extra receiver to draw defensive attention toward the passing game if one of the receivers on the field is Johnson.

I dunno, C.J. is to inconsistent to warrant doubles all the time. It would be interesting to see an NFL team run a shot-gun spread style offense, it certainly couldn’t hurt the Bungles, they’re already pretty bad, so why not give it a shot?

Probably because the speed of the NFL defense compared to college is much faster, making it harder to spread the D as much. This puts the QB at much higher risk, and the Bungle’s have a lot of value invested in a QB that’s not as big/mobile as a Romo, Rothelesburger, Young, etc.

Looking at what New Orleans was capable of when they spread the field last year, this makes sense in theory. Brees has a very quick release and Carson Palmer could do well in this type of system. Rudi Johnson is not a receiving back, but Shaun Alexander has shown the ability to catch balls out of the backfield (if they sign him). That O-line is still suspect and the WRs they have outside of Housh and Chad are unproven. If Chad, as expected, isn’t on the field, I don’t see this strategy working. Cincy had a brief revival when Marvin came to town (and demanded cheapskate Mike Brown upgrade the facilities which were the league’s worst), but I could see Cincy with a top 10 pick in 2009. There are too many things that can derail them this year.

They certainly have to do something. Chad Johnson seems to choke when in a big game situation. Lewis also said previously they are planning Chad sitting out (honoring his word to sit out).

Let it be said, I usually shy away from Bengal bashing…
It just seems like Marvin is throwing sh#t against the wall to see what sticks. If he goes through with this, Palmer is going to get rocked.
It is the worst thing for a quarterback who is already timid about getting hit after the Kimo tackle.

The last thing the Bungles need to do is ruin the only good thing they have going. The offense is not broken, yet. Why fix it?
As a Raven fan I really hope they try this, and they keep Ocho Stinko out of football. See what happens when you put 3 rookie WRs on the feild week 1 and run a stupid spread offense against the most complicated, hard hitting defense in the NFL. BTW we don’t need no saftey in the box to stuff the Bungle run game. We play mostly cover 2 since your TE sucks and we can blast your RBs with just Ray and Scott sitting behind the 2 big DTs, you get a lot of Ngata on the ground. It is the Chris Henry match up that caused CJ or TJ to be singled up. Now that he is back on his way to jail, and CJ is working on his media credentials, Palmer is going to take a beating trying to find somewhere safe to throw the ball.
Seriously though, why not just trade Ocho to Detroit or AZ for a better younger WR? Silly Bungles.

It looks like they drafted to replace Chris Henry and also to call Ocho’s bluff. If he does sit out, the Bengals won’t be caught unprepared.

OK where was the huge impact Johnson had on our running game last year? Its easy to explain because if he is not getting the ball he doesnt give 100% Defenses know that. And quaterbacks are protected by in large by the line drobviroiusso…. and keep in mind NONE of those qb’s have an arm with power or the accuracy of Palmer. I think this style is going to be the trend of the NFL these days and the BengALS are in a prime position to exploit that. DOnt Hate WHO DEY

The new marketing slogan of the SinSinnati Bungles should be ‘WTF has Brown done for you Bungles fans??? Forgive me if I am not at all enamored with the efforts of the Brown entourage The Brown Bombers hae led this franchise like Moses led the Israelites into the dessert for 40 years lost and alone… Brown Must Go! Hanging Chad Must GO!!!
Too bad the NFL isn’t like International Football… When you stink you get relegated!!!

The bottom line is, the Bengals are the 1 team in the NFL who are man to stand up to buffoons like Chad Johnson. Great, they could’ve received some first round picks for Chad. . . how many of them, (particularly in the Bengals case) turn out to be very effective anyway?

Snake -> Yes, they are protected by the line. In a spread offense, the line plays with larger space between linemen. This works at lower levels, because DB’s and LB’s have to play farther away to account for the wide spread of receivers. Those DB’s and LB’s are a lot faster, and can cover receivers or attack the QB from the same spot. Yes, it worked for the Pats last year, but that’s party because they forced defenses into double and triple coverage of Moss on almost every down. That’s not something any other receiver in the league can really pull off.
I’m not ‘HAting on WHO DAY” in this case, I just don’t think a traditional spread offense works with their current personnel.

LOL @ the pompus Ravens fan.
If your offense can stay on the field long enough to give the defense a break they might be able to rush Palmer, but didn’t you guys get your brains beat in by them last year?

Well Drob would you agree that if any team in the league can scare an opponent with their passing game it is the Bengals? Especially now with who we just drafted. You cannot let us get behind you or its over, the Bengals MAKE the other team respect the pass, so I dont get your point…The reason it didnt work for us last year was because our running game was so bad they didnt have to respect it. Look at 05 season when we had our running game. WHO DEY

The Bengals were down to 4 WRs before the draft. Let’s see: the recently signed Doug Gabriel, Maxwell who caught a pass last year for the Bengals after being picked off from waivers from San Fran, TJ Housh with 1 year on his contract, and Chad with his situation.
Why would you even ask them why they are drafting WRs? Is anyone asking Baltimore and Miami why they drafted a QB? Is anyone trying to call out any other head coach for drafting his teams’ need?

Laughing so hard as barely know where to start………
Number 1……there would be no “Chad situation” in any other city. I can’t think of too many teams that would have let him run the asylum to begin with.
And Number 2……the Steelers Defense are licking their chops.

No, not with NE, Dallas, and Indy in the league. They should be better at making teams fear the passing game next year just like they did last year. Not to mention Pittsburgh, San Diego, Jacksonville, Philly and the Brownies having the potential to have a very good passing game, depending on how things shake out in those cities this year.
