In acquiring cornerback Pacman Jones, the No. 6 overall pick in the 2005 draft, from the Titans, the Cowboys worked out a new deal with Jones.  And that contract heavily protects the Cowboys financially.

Per Todd Archer of the Dallas Morning News, Jones will earn a base salary of $700,000 in 2008, with no signing bonus.  His salary increases to $1 million in 2009, with a $250,000 roster bonus.  The base pay jumps to $3 million in 2010, with another roster bonus in the amount of $255,000 and a reporting bonus of $345,000.  He also is eligible for workout bonuses of $250,000 in 2008 and 2009.

In the final year of the contract, Jones’ salary spikes to $7.25 million.  It can go even higher, based on his performance.

If Jones qualifies for two Pro Bowls or intercepts seven or more passes in two seasons (and participates in 65 percent of the snaps or more) his base salary increases to the amount of the franchise tender in 2011.

Our guess is that Jones will start banging the drum for a new deal if/when he shows that he can continue to play at a high level, and to stay out of trouble.  For now, though, Jones has no leverage, and thus he had to take whatever the Cowboys were willing to pay him.
