We noted yesterday that free-agent running back Shaun Alexander is interested in playing for the Bengals.
Apparently the interest is mutual. Geoff Hobson writes at Bengals.com that Alexander is scheduled to visit the Bengals on Monday.
“Shaun wants to get an idea how the Bengals would use him and I’m sure the Bengals would like to talk to him,” agent Jim Steiner said. “But there is interest on both sides.”
Although the 30-year-old Alexander is a former league MVP, he might have a hard time making a roster with the way he’s played in the last two years. He hasn’t looked like a legitimate No. 1 running back since 2005, and he doesn’t offer the contributions on special teams that teams often look for from their backup running backs.
If a signing with the Bengals happens at all, it would likely come before the team’s May 13 minicamp.

The Bengals suck, and suck for all the right reasons… maybe Shaun can integrate his stupid TD celebration into a new version of the Icky Shuffle.
How very Bengals of them.

With Shaun’s rep for community service and prominent membership on the God Squad, it’s possible Cincinattica is hiring for a warden as much as they are a half back.

so im just curious, rudi johnson?? why are they looking @ RB’s when thier main target should be looking for new WR. they have a solid running game when it gets going but as for thier arial attch they need to find a new #2 reciver (im saying this cause Johnson will be gone and TJ willget the number one spot and if his agent does a good job a possible pay raise) so bengals address yyou most concerned position now. not one for a guy who has been plagued by the madden curse….

I like the move for several reasons: Gives us another option in case Rudi sucks again, gives us someone that can be useful in the passing game, and gives me a stud RB for Madden 09! He is better than Rudi, even if he isnt in MVP form anymore. Oh, and the Haters need to quit spewing the negativity. This time of the offseason, all 32 teams feel like they are contenders. Bengals fans get tired of hearing all the crap, and ost of it is unoriginal like ‘Bungals’. I can make fun of 31 teams in the NFL right now, even the pooptriates and the revoltin’ colts, and especially the sh*tsburg squealers. The only team with braggin rights is the Giants. Who dey, sucka’s.

Umm, jdawg, we just drafted three wide receivers, and the one in the second round is going to turn out to be the steal of the draft. Jerome Simpson. I love these people who criticize without knowing the facts.
I am also tired of all the stupid Bengals jail jokes because it is not fair to Carson Palmer, Rudi, TJ, and most of the other players on the team for the actions of a few. Also, Denver and the Vikings have had way more arrests in the last 12 months and nobody rags on them.

Amen, bondem777. I love the youtube highlights on Simpson. Don’t forget the Squealers and their recent arrests. Maybe Jared Allen can get a DUI on a boat in the land of 10000 lakes, a la Eric Steinbech… Most of the teams in the NFL have this crap going on, but everyone goes bonkos over the Bengals.

I can’t think of any reason why a team would want this guy. He’s just looking to continue picking up paychecks for the absolute minimal effort possible.

Amen! It was justified when the BENGALS hadn’t had a winning season for about 15 years, but times have changed in the last 5 years, where the BENGALS have been 42-38. Granted, it isn’t a Patriots dynasty, but they have been competitive.
Why don’t the rest of you join us here in 2008! Welcome to the present!

But seriously, go Bungles.

timmd0gg,
Exactly how will Shaun Alexander be useful in the passing game? He has never known for being a third down back, nor has he ever been known for being a receiving threat who can break long gains in space and his pass protection has always been mediocre at best and half-hearted mostly. I don’t think he’ll be a good fit for the Bengals at all - he is mostly a 1st and 2nd down back.

Alexander should be a low risk move. Who knows, he could be decent again if he’s playing for a contract.
With that said, Jimmy thinks the Bengals should be more concerend with stopping the run than signing running backs. The way to beat that team always has been to run right at them.
Also, can we please stop with all the Bungles, Clowns Squealers stuff. It’s ALL incredibly stupid. It’s like stuff second graders would find amusing.

Well, if the Bengals sign Alexander, he could play the role of the criminal turned minister that you see on those MSNBC lockdown shows…

To answer nemesis, I am comparing Alexander to Rudi Johnson in regards to usefulness:
Career totals:
Back Catches Yards TDs
Rudi 101 588 1
Shaun 214 1511 12
Best seasons:
Back Catches Yards TDs
Rudi 21 146 0
Shaun 59 460 2
Watson 52 374 0
Perry 51 328 2
If only Stephen Jackson was their ‘flavor’ of back, maybe we would have made the playoffs more than once since I was in middle school.
Still, though Shaun may be past his peak, he seems more of a threat than Rudi. Best case may be a health Kenny Irons or Chris Perry (if that exists).
