The Philadelphia Eagles have ripped a scab from an old wound, by filing a lawsuit against receiver Terrell Owens.
The move is a mere formality, aimed at enforcing an arbitritation award that the Eagles secured earlier in the year regarding Owens’ obligation to repay bonus money based on his conduct in 2005, which culminated in a four-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team. The suit was required because Owens has reportedly ignored efforts by the team to recover the money.
The team thereafter sent him home with pay, but withheld the checks and applied them to the total bonus repayment obligation of $1.7 million. It left a difference of $769,117, which Owens must pay out of his own pocket.
The Eagles’ only request of the federal court in which the matter was filed will be to convert the arbitration award into a valid judgment, which the team would then use as the basis to pursue Owens’ assets.
Once the judgment is entered, the Eagles can attempt to recover the money in any jurisdiction where Owens has assets, by asking the courts in such jurisdictions to recognize the judgment. In most cases, it’s a fairly automatic procedure.
And someone who should be paying particular attention to this is Bengals receiver Chad Johnson. If he follows through on his threat to hold out and/or retire, he eventually could be required to write an even bigger check to the Bengals.
Surprisingly, we’ve heard nothing from Johnson since the Bengals didn’t trade him over the weekend. Maybe that’s because the team that was chasing him — the Redskins — drafted two of the highest-rated receivers.

What a douchebag this guy T.O. really is. All this acting as a macho-guy, walking tall, talking crap … he’s just another punk who won’t pay his bills. What a joke.
And another thing: Why doesn’t the League simply freeze Drew Rosenhaus out, by refusing (even quietly, if that’s the way they need to do it) to deal with any of his clients? How does this guy manage to get his clients anyway? Well, I’ve heard terrible, terrible things about his practices, and if true, this guy should be barred. He’s the jerk who precipitated T.O.’s 2005 crappola, and is pushing all of Chad Johnson’s buttons.
Afterall, douchebag doesn’t get paid — anything — unless Chad Johnson, or other d-heads, get new contracts, with PHAT signing bonuses.
REALLY, if I was an NFL GM, and I had 2 or more prospects in front of me, and one was a Rosenhaus client, I would flat out make my decision just based on that. This guy Rosenhaus doesn’t play the game. He brings NOTHING to the table that any other agent can’t — until he crosses the line. That 2005 crap with T.O. and the Eagles was WAY OVER THE LINE. Here it is 2008, and the League is all deaf and dumb as Drew Rosenhaus orchestrates the next chapter with oaf Chad Johnson, who is a idiot wide receiver who’s never, ever won anything.
I’m glad the Eagles are suing T.O. — I just wish they could go after Rosenhaus. What a jerkoff this guy is.

Meanwhile on the Brian Westbrook front…has everyone forgotten about the $3,000,000 he owes the team? Doesn’t appear that Philly is being to vigilant about recouping that money.

It also sends a message to someone like Lito Sheppard as well. What is says basically, is that were not just going to take 75 cents on the dollar for you in trade value, and if we can’t get the full dollar for you, you’re not going anywhere.
“And if you decide to make a pain of yourself Lito, well, this is the proven path we have walked before…”

Damn, they may have to start another food drive in Philly for T.O. to help feed his family. They may even have to resort to “I Can’t Believe It’s not Butter” on their Popcorn.

That’s called “collusion”. Interesting that you advocate surreptitiously screwing dozens of players over at risk of exposing the entire league to serious litigation.

haha, as if the Eagles came out on top of that TO deal. McNabb’s psyche is irreparably damaged already. He’s a losing QB since the PukeBowl.

If your favorite players are so full of false machismo and so devoid of emotion that they are incapable of crying when moved by any situation involving team and/or teammates, you might be an Eagles fan. Maybe that’s why the Eagles went 8-8 last year. Lack of emotion.

More proof of just how cheap the Beagles are. They, once again, traded out of the first round to avoid paying for the pick. Sure, they gave Samuel all that cash. But that was because they HAD to get to the floor of the cap somehow.
And to the person who asked about Brian Westbrook…they DIDN’T pay him last year…they kept his paycheck every week, which was something that REALLY pissed him off in the locker room.
McNabb is going to explode sometime soon…they got him no playmakers…they didn’t even get him help on the O Line. With two tackles close to the AARP for linemen, they will be in big trouble by game 6, if McNabb makes it that far into the season.

CFioren317,
The Eagles arent really a “cheap” team just because they have enough cap room to pull off a big move at anytime. They signed a lot of big players in FA in recent history (Kearse,Howard,Samuel,TO).
The Westbrook situation, although they do need to pay him more, was handled well. If the company you worked for paid you $3,000,000 more than what you should have recived, how would you like to pay them back? Would you rather give back the 3mil in one lump sum or would you rather keep it and not get paid for a time less than 1 year? To say “they didnt pay the guy” is BS, they OVERPAID him.
McNabb has the playmakers they need to compete and the defense and special teams got better in the off season. The Eagles ranked in the top 10 of total offense last year, they just couldnt punch it in from the red zone and a wounded McNabb and LJ Smith had a lot to do with that.
*Before FA the Eagles had 17.17million in cap space which ranked as 22 out of 32 total teams. Not cheaper than 21 other teams.
