The Carolina Panthers had planned to bolster their defensive line in the draft but ended the weekend with only one new defensive lineman, sixth-round pick Nick Hayden of Wisconsin.
So today they’ve added to their line via free agency, signing veteran defensive tackle Darwin Walker to a one-year contract.
Walker played the 2007 season with the Chicago Bears, starting seven games and recording 17 total tackles. Prior to signing with Chicago he had spent six years with the Eagles, where for a time he was one of the league’s best pass-rushing defensive tackles.
Walker, who grew up in South Carolina, will likely be a backup in Carolina to starters Maake Kemoeatu and Damione Lewis. The Panthers have been looking for help at defensive tackle since trading Kris Jenkins to the Jets.

He was pretty good when he was with Philly, and wasn’t he supposed to start in Buffalo after Philly traded him there? He was way good when he was with Corey Simon with the Eagles, did he get hurt or something?

Glad to see the Panthers are now in the “Sign a Fat Guy to a One Year Deal” Club.

Walker was okay in Philly as a pass-rushing DT. He was constantly man-handled as a run stopper which is why they drafted Brodrick Bunkley. In the offseason after they drafted Bunkley, Walker started to complain about his contract then they shipped him to Buffalo. Buffalo couldn’t reach an agreement with him on a new contract so they sent him right to Chicago. As an avid Eagles fan, I’d never describe Walker as being great. He was a mediocre starter in my eyes which is why he is only a backup in Carolina now.

Well if the Panthers had actually addressed their needs in the draft signing Bryant wouldn’t be needed but they decided to take players that will only be back ups in the middle of the third instead of trying to find starters.

The Fox/Hurney combo is gonna run this team in the ground. Personell wise, they have made bad move after bad move. We thought it was bad last year not having a safety worthy of playing in the box, wait till this year. Opposing running backs will have their way with no D-line or safety. But hey, we got 22 linebackers and tight ends now.

‘For a time’ can mean a single drive, right?
