On Saturday, Tarvaris Jackson likely exhaled when the Vikings passed on quarterbacks Brian Brohm and Chad Henne at the bottom of round two.
He can start holding his breath again.
In the fifth round of the draft, the Vikings have selected USC quarterback John David Booty.
Though it might not be an open competition in Booty’s rookie year, Jackson had enough nagging injuries in 2007 to suggest that Booty will get to play at some point in 2008. And that could set the stage for a competition from 2009.

Very Solid pick and great insurance. He can sit and learn this year and compete the following year for playing time

I don’t know how I feel about the Packers trading that pick to the Vikes to get their quarterback of the future. We might regret that one.

Maybe the Packers thought that Booty sucked, so they were more than willing to trade to the Vikings.

Gotta like everything the Vikes have done in the off-season. This team wins the Division IF they can get anything out of their QB (and that’s a big IF).

Good move by the Queens. Booty immediately becomes the third best QB in the division!

Strangely, John David Booty is underrated. He’ll be able to start within a year or two unless Tavaris Jackson turns things around.

Moon, Johnson, Booty. Thank god they never signed Weinke!

Solid pick?? QB of the future. Are we really talking about John Booty. How is he going to throw the ball deep to BB?
re: KY. QB is not the only weakness on the Vikes. You are not very good with your observations are you?

Very good pick. Makes me feel alot better going into the season. Don’t be surprised if Jackson gets hurt and Booty never looks back!

Booty is a solid a pick. I believe he has the physical and mental skills to play QB on the NFL, but don’t see him ever making a ProBowl. I think he is a solid backup that can step up and start if necessary and do very well if there is plenty of talent around him but I doubt he can carry a team.

The Packers still have the best two QB’s in the North. I can’t believe both the Vikes and Bears passed on Brohm….twice each. Rex Grossman and Tavaris Jackson…awesome!

Florio makes it sound like Booty will be able to come in when Jackson gets hurt, but seems to ignore the fact Booty’s own career has been hampered by injuries.
Cheeseheads are excited they get to face Grossman and Jackson? How do you think the Vikes and Bears feel about facing the fragile Aa-Rod? We’re pretty pleased too.

Wait…How is Booty the third best QB in the division? Is that a joke?
Kitna, Rodgers, Orton, probably even Brohm and Jackson are all better.

(In a pirate accent)AARRGGHH! These Vikings be a plunderin’ and they got their Booty! John David Booty be his name!!! Ye NFC North foes beware: Minnesota’s most glaring need did get addressed in the fifth round of the draft. I was openly critical of the decision not to draft QB’s Chad Henne or Brian Brohm in round two, but will settle for JDB in the fifth any day. This gives Vikes fans some hope that should Tarvaris Jackson falter, all will not be sunken to the bottom of the sea.

Minnesota’s most glaring need is HEAD COACH. GM and OWNER are right up there, too. Then maybe a stadium, and some decent fans. LOL.

Adrian Peterson is looking at 10 man fronts until you give the QBs someone to throw to. Bernard Berrian does not count.

if your are gunna take a qb why wait till the end of the draft? why keep adding pieces to your defense when its your offense(specificly qb) that is holding you back! one more idiot move by chiily, remember what happened last time he “identified” a player and moved up to get him, it was t-jack…. now you got t-something else on the other side of the ball. just dumb

If I was an expansion franchise and needed to pick a QB from the NFL North, I would pick them in this order: Rodgers, Brohm, Booty, Orton, Grossman, Jackson, Kitna.
I still can’t believe the Vikings and Bears both passed on Brohm in the 2nd given their current awful lineup of QB’s.

Gang, they passed on Brohm because he has a history of being aloof, thus not a take-charge guy in the huddle. They may be right, who knows? But Booty is the super-accurate checkdown WCO QB, exactly what they thought they needed. His productivity depends on how well the line protects.
