Former West Virginia running back Steve Slaton, a touchdown machine whose production dropped considerably in 2007, has been drafted in the third round by the Houston Texans.
Slaton was viewed by scouts in 2006 as a Reggie Bush-style back, which at the time was regarded as a compliment.
In Houston, Slaton’s speed will fit well with the one-cut running philosophy that the team will be utilizing with a zone blocking scheme.
The guys on NFL Network also mentioned that Slaton was worked out at receiver, too, during the Scouting Combine.

Good pick for the Texans, I couldn’t believe this guy was falling this far. I was hoping he fell to the Bengals!

As a Texans fan, I like this pick, but feel like they failed so miserably in Round 1 that I can’t help but feel disgusted about their whole draft. I almost wet myself when they were picking at 18 and Rashard Mendenhall was on the board, I thought it was a sure-fire thing. Then they traded down.
No big deal, right? Trading down is always smart if you can still get your man, right?
*Texans fans get a pie in the face*
Wrong. Who the H E L L is Duane Brown!? A projected Third Rounder!? Aaaaaaargh! Still makes me sick.
In Houston’s defense, however, I feel the need to remind myself that I felt similarly when they took Super Mario over Vince Young, and we all know how that turned out (very, very well). So maybe they know something about Duane that I don’t (extremely likely). We’ll wait and see, but I have a sinking feeling he’ll bust at Tackle and just be another interchangeable “guy” on the O-line who everybody forgets about it two years. Hope I’m wrong…

Slaton is a GREAT pick…if you’re making s’mores and you already have the graham crackers and chocolate.
I’ll be surprised if he survives training camp in tact.

I really didn’t watch him much at college, but the little that I did see, and the draft highlights, the kid reminds me of Warrick Dunn. If they picked up that kind of talent in rd 3, it may overshadow that ill-advised Brown pick in rd1.
