Did that Dallas fan say they get the guys on their last chances and that everyone ELSE is an apologist?

-laughs-

I guess Michael Irvin being busted in a hotel room with a crack pipe and Nate Newton getting pulled over with over 200 lbs of pot in his car don't count? Also...if they already know they are turds and THEN they sign them aren't they even more guilty of enabling these idiots?

The funniest part to me is half the people complaining about these guys being arrested for DUI are driving home from a bar half bombed on Sunday evening after all the games ;)

Glass houses ya know.

To clarify, as there seems to be a bit of confusion on this issue, when Lewis says that it is "a bit of a risk", he's referring to the fact that Shirley may not continue his life of crime and, thus, would not be a good fit for the team.

I'm pleased the Bengals haven't been intimidated by all the sniping from others. All teams take risks on "character issue" guys. With the Cowboys actively chasing after bad-boy poster boys Pacman and Tank, the Steelers assembling as many wife-beaters as they can find, and the Vikings handing over huge money to a guy with a history of drinking problems right on the heals of their failed Koren Robinson experiment, there's no reason the Bengals should get any less benefit of the doubt for dropping a 5th round pick on a character-issue guy.

If fans want the NFL cleaned up, then you're welcome to your opinion. Just stop harping on the Bengals when they are certainly not alone.

Google "Jaguars" and "arrest" and then explain to me why they don't get the same comments that the Bengals do. If the reason is because they've had a better record than the Bengals, then you might want to think about that.

This is getting to be ridiculous. Why do you keep piling on the Bengals? They accumulated 22 turd points for all of 2007. 9 of those points were assigned to Chris Henry for not wearing a seat belt, turning without a turn signal, and driving with a suspended license which was re-instated at that time. Many other teams had 2 and 3 times as many turd points. Why aren't these teams attacked for all their violations? Why single out the Bengals? I can only imagine the huge criticism if they picked McFadden, yet no one mentioned a word about Oakland. What about Chicago, Denver, Tampa, Dallas, Oakland, Miami, Jacksonville, Minnesota, Tennessee and San Diego? Check it out. These teams have accumulated many, many turds, yet they are not criticized. The Bengals discarded all but 2 or 3 turds. They now have more good character players than most of the other teams in the NFL. Please make note of that fact. Be fair and objective in your editorials. And how about mentioning some of the other turds collected in this draft? Be fair and balanced...Please!

What part of 10 players arrested in 14 months do you not see as bad? I'm also confused by the posters who think the bengals are compariable to the Cowboys & Raiders.

I love the Bengals fan who has the 1 out of 10 isn't bad attitude..... ha ha ha.

Shirley deserves a fair shot at the NFL.
I'm all for 2nd chances, but it's hilarious that the team that gave him a 2nd chance was the Bengals of all teams.

If I was CJ I would take it to the media and throw it back at M. Lewis. Spin the story that you can't keep playing for the same team that recruits new thugs each season and jepordizes the lives of the good people of cincy. That would add a great twist to the drama

Too bad the Jaguars didn't take a DT, they could have "partially validated" the Bengals pick.

Everyone has an opinion on this. I just think if you are Marvin Lewis there is no way you can justify this pick. But at least he is doing his way. It may get him bounced but like Frank he's doing it his way.

Shirley blew a .12 ..... and left the scene of an accident after crashing into a house. If he beats the charges...it doesn't mean he isn't guilty....he just had a good lawyer.

And...if Shirley made it to his house or whatever before the cops got him....he will beat the DUI. Even Florio could get him off on that one.

here is another example of what's wrong with the nfl. every year during the draft, teams talk about how they are going to stay away from players with red flags, but every year there are teams like the bengals that draft thugs. it is sad that in the nfl, thugs are more welcomed then players with mental illnesses although most mental illnesses could be treated with medication. her for example is a team that has been trying to get a strong pass rushing defensive end, but leaves tommy blake off their draft board due to his depression. these teams are more affraid to take a chance that a draft pick might end up being another ricky williams, but they don't care if another player ends up being a mike vick. there are more upsides for an individual like blake considering that the team could add a stipulation in a contract that if the player didn't take his mental health meds then he could be dismissed from the team with no financial obligation.

Seriously folks, spending a fifth round pick- one out of nine picks overall, on a guy with a huge upside sounds more like a calculated risk than part of some overall trend. There are plenty of things wrong with the Bengals- the way Mike Brown refuses to hire a GM, Marvin's seeming wussiness, Chad Johnson's ridiculous ego, their refusal to take two first round picks for the problem child, and 17 horrible years of a poor excuse for a football team. This is not one of them. Shirley screws up, they send him packing. He's been told that going in. It's nothing but a roll of the dice.

If your kid gets a DUI or waives a gun while running around his limousine and you blame it on football then you're a terrible parent. Other than that argument, who really cares? Seriously, get over yourselves. Amen to the Raiders/Cowboys etc. getting a free pass. What's that about? Not to mention Shirley has a trial pending--so its nice that you guys have convicted him already. That will save us tax dollars with that pesky right to trial.

We could be fair and wait for him to get in trouble as a pro before we start critisizing. Maybe getting draft opened his eyes and changed his life. Just look at what it did for Maurice clarett... oh yeah good call.

Jerramy Stevens had a few DUIs and a hit and run; I wonder if this guy spells the the day before Sunday "satterday," ever sent a taunting e-mail to a girl he raped, or stomped on a dude who was just whacked in the head with a bat by one of his friends. If so, Gruden has a spot in Tampa if the Bengals cut him.

The new disciplinary rules allow Goodell to fine teams who consistently have players who get into trouble and bring the League into disrepute. Maybe it's time he start exercising that power. Only then will teams get a clue that drafting these guys -- no matter how allegedly good on the field -- is just not worth it.

BTW, is Shirley now subject to League discipline for that little undisclosed DUI arrest with accompanying trial?

I guess it would be different if the Bengals didn't make a habit of drafting these "thugs" every year, but they have.
If the Bengals scouting department is that pathetic that they didn't know about his record it's one thing. If they knew about his record and still drafted him it's another thing.
The point Florio is making why risk the headache and possible media backlash.

I am looking forward to Christian Peter type fiasco where the Bengals are forced to cut him in the next 10 days. That or Lewis and or GM gets fired.

Let me get this straight: Dallas signs Tank, the gun collector, and trades for the Pacman and they get a pass yet the Bengals draft a guy with a court date and they don't have a clue? A lot of people have screwed up thinking and most of them are NOT Bengals. And, riddle me this, Batman: when was the last time you saw a Bengal on the Turd Watch here on PFT?

The Saints moved up 2 spots to leapfrog the Bengals and take a DT. Wonder if this is why the Bengals were swayed into taking this one.

Hmmmm....seems like Brad Childress just traded the farm, and a mountain of cash, for a guy with 2 DUI's. Marvin, of whom I'm not a big fan, spends a 5th round pick and he's a piece of garbage? C'mon RJ. Easy with the dramatics. And anyone who, KY, insinuates that Chad Johnson has a clue should have his posting ability revoked!

The Bengals drafted a lot of character guys such as Rivers today. They decide to give a chance to one out of 10. That is not so bad. There are a lot of guys who were drafted today with worse problems, yet you are not jumping on the teams that drafted them. There are a lot of teams that have had more arrests than the Bengals in the last 12 months. (Broncos and Titans for starters). Yet you want to jump on the Bengals yet again because it's the easy thing to do. You're taking it way over the top.

The Enquirer also noted that 4 of the first 8 players taken were team captains last year. So they're not all turds. Maybe half of them are turds.

and as of now, Cinci's last pick is in and it's *another* WR, Mario Urrutia. 3 WRs and a TE... as a fan all I hope they do is bring some game, because it looks like housecleaning time at Paul Brown Stadium.

And that's why they're called "The Bungles" in most circles. Simply an indefensible pick by an organization that ill afford to waste a pick on a guy with that many red flags on his resume.
