When the Jacksonville Jaguars shot up from No. 26 to No. 8 in the first round of the 2008 draft in order to land defensive end Derrick Harvey, an obvious question arose.
Why didn’t the Jags simply do the same deal with the Chiefs for Jared Allen?
To get Allen, the Vikings invested a first-round pick and two third-rounders. They also flip-flopped picks with the Chiefs in round six, a drop of five spots.
To get Harvey, the Jags invested a first-round pick and two third-rounders. And a fourth-rounder.
Under either the official “old” trade chart or the unofficial “new” trade chart, the Vikings gave up more total points, since the Vikings surrendered the No. 17 overall pick in round one and the Jags sent to Baltimore the No. 26 selection.
Based on the old chart, the Vikings sent 1,357 points to the Chiefs, and the Jags gave 1,127 to the Ravens. Under the new chart, the Vikings gave 1,447 and the Jags gave up 1,247.
The Vikings also paid Allen a contract on par with the No. 1 overall selection, and the Jags will invest far less money in Harvey.
But here’s the difference: Allen has shown that he can play at a very high level in the NFL. Harvey has shown nothing but potential. Setting aside for now the question of whether Allen can avoid the demons that caused him to drink then drive in the past, Allen presents the lower risk from a football standpoint.
Plus, Allen can hit the ground sprinting in his first year with the Vikings. For the Jags, who are hoping to topple the Colts atop the AFC South, they’ll need an instant impact from Harvey to match what Allen can do, akin to what the Panthers got from Julius Peppers in 2002 and the Titans from Jevon Kearse in 1999.

I think “Partially” is the key word here. There is a major difference in the amount of money invested, and the upside is definitely also with the Jaguars. Allen is tremendous, but going to a rowdy bunch like the Vikings (ie Love Boat) I wouldn’t be surprised to see him fall off the wagon once again…

The Chiefs didn’t want to deal Allen within the AFC (or at least they would have charged a heckuva lot more).
So there is that reasoning. (Someone on Sports Illustrated wrote that point, don banks maybe)

KC probably didn’t want to trade Allen to another AFC team. But it’s worth asking: how many DUIs does Harvey have?

This a good point, they basically gave up the same amount in terms of picks, and to get a totall unproven guy. Then they take another DE in Groves with their next pick. If they needed DE’s that bad why not get the proven guy.
Also shows the Vikes did not give up too much for Allen.

The Jaguars give overall fewer draft-points AND less money to a guy who so far hasn’t shown himself to be a turd, and you think the Vikings are vindicated? They had extra picks and they used ‘em. Harvey was one of the few bright spots on a bad/young defense last year and also a beast on a great defense the year before, and he shone in the BCS title game. He’s not any more unknown than any other draft pick. Why didn’t New England go get a free agent linebacker? Why didn’t Miami go out and get a Free Agent offensive lineman?

Del Rio is on record on this topic. His concern is bringing in a guy and making him the highest paid guy in the locker room and the message it sends. He stops short of specificallingy challenging character. Jared Allen is a proven stud, but he’s reminiscient of Mark Gastineau in his off the field life. Del Rio is not about to bring a two-time offender into his locker room. That mullet in Jacksonville would be an aphrodisiac all beach season and he’d be a lock to get suspended for some nefarious deed. Instead, he postures that he won’t put all his eggs in one basket and trades up to draft the two DEs they wanted. I drank four gallons of water today just to salute such an aggressive draft strategy.

Yeah, the Vikings sure are a rowdy bunch, due to an incident from several years ago. Most of the participants being guys who are gone, too.
As long as Allen doesn’t hang out with McKinnie, there weill hopefully be no issues.

Allen may have proven himself to be a “turd” in the past, but he’s proven himself to be a great NFL player and so far has turned his life around, been clean for over 18 months. But, to most people that didn’t get Allen on their favorite team, he doesn’t deserve the chance to better himself, and most seem to hope he fails. And Jacksonville has given up about the same to be able to draft a guy that hasn’t even proven he can play a down in the NFL.

I’m no Jags fan, but I L O V E this move by them. Derrick Harvey has a knack for getting behind the line of scrimmage on every play, he’s an attack dog - thoroughbred. He had 11 sacks in 5 games as a sophomore and 18.5 as a full-time starter his Jr season… in the SEC. If that doesn’t make your eyes bug, I’d have to call you an Offensive fanboy.
I expected Harvey to go in the top ten, but I didn’t see Jacksonville moving all the way up to 8 for him. They run a HIGHLY efficient ball-control offense, and used all their picks on D. They’re in the AFC South, the toughest division is the NFL, and I think they may actually have an honest shot a dethroning the Colts this year. My Texans still have no hope (yet).
My initial opinion is that the Jags made a VERY good choice by moving up for Harvey, and its scary to think they’ll be better than they were last year…

Harvey has zero DUI’s (as of this blog) but don’t worry……Brian Williams and the like will show him around…..
One thing about these jag’s, they like to drink, party, drive fast and cuss out the local cops….

Yesterday’s draft only confirmed there were three top Defensive Ends available. And now Jacksonville has one of them. Some teams have decided to try find an impact player in the lower rounds. Good luck with that.

The love boat squad is long gone. As is the coaching regime who was in place when it happened. A few of them are now with the JAGS, ironically. Yeah, those Vikings are a rowdy bunch. Can I remind you that your (JAX) two head coaches are former Vikings.
What people fail to see is that Allen was not kicked out of KC. In fact, he is loved by his team-mates and fans, and everyone close to him said they saw a complete transformation prior to last year, which led to him being the sack-leader. They said he was the best player on the team and hate Carl Peterson for letting him go.
The draft is a huge gamble. Harvey has zero NFL sacks. Allen had 15.5 and didn’t even play the entire season.
Good luck to both

If Vegas set odds on whether or not a player would get suspended, Jared Allen would see a lot of action. He cannot screw up at all in Minnesota. That Defense was ferocious last year and dropped a turd at Safety only to replace him with a “sexier” and more productive turd at DE. On the field this is a fantastic move, but I’d like to see all these band wagon jumpers back up Allen if his next DUI killed someone. It’s a serious offense that gets brushed under the carpet as typical immature behavior. My hope is that he truly has turned his life around and satisfies his new contract without incident, but I’m really skeptical.

Someone needs to explain to me, as I’ve heard over and over again, how Jacksonville gave anything up in the first round:
To get Harvey, the Jags invested a first-round pick and two third-rounders. And a fourth-rounder.
They didn’t “invest” anything from the first round. They were sitting at 26, and the Ravens were at 8. They gave the Ravens two thirds and a fourth, and swapped first round picks.
Besides, how is moving from 26 to 8 in the first round “giving up” anything? I seem to recall in 1998, Jacksonville made a similar move by trading Rob Johnson to Buffalo for the ninth pick. They wound up with Fred Taylor. Wouldn’t one say that moving up to get Harvey was an upgrade over what they would have had at 26?
As for trading for Allen or Jason Taylor, what would make anyone think Jack Del Rio would make either move? He’s done nothing but build for the future, picking up some real jars on the shelf along the way, especially defensively. They’ve busted on a couple of wide outs, and the Leftwich thing never worked.
But the risks he has taken with some players have worked well, and is the reason this team will contend again this year.
And he also hasn’t broken the bank to do it. Allen and Taylor want big money, Allen has issues, and Taylor is 33. If Allen was so valuable, why are the Chiefs so willing to let him go?
This Jaguar fan is happy. Give me the young kid.
