The quarterback-loving Tampa Bay Buccaneers have seven — count ‘em — seven quarterbacks on the roster, after adding Josh Johnson in round five on Sunday.
Our friends at Pewter Report report that the Bucs will take only five of them to training camp.
Presumably, no more than three will be on the active roster, so four of the quarterbacks currently in Tampa won’t be in Tampa come September.
The other six are Jeff Garcia, Brian Griese, Bruce Gradkowski, Luke McCown, Chris Simms, and Jake Plummer.
Plummer retired a year ago, and has shown no inclination of coming back. Simms most likely will be cut before training camp.
That leaves Griese, Gradkowski, McCown, and Johnson to battle for two roster spots. Our guess is that it’s Gradkowski vs. Johnson, and Griese vs. McCown.

Gradkowski takes the second spot, Griese the third. Josh Johnson converts to H-back/WR to stay on the roster.

Maybe they will release Chris Simms an he will end up competing for a spot in Miami against Beck, McCown, and Henne

The Bucs have Simms = gone. Plummer = retired, gone.
Gradkowski = hanging by thumbnails, Gone.
The Bucs go with Garcia, Luke M., Griese, Johnson.
4 QBs just like last year.

Knowing Gruden, they’ll keep 4. My guess is that It’s Gradkowski vs. McCown for the final spot, assuming Griese and Johnson show minimal ability in camp.

Maybe Gruden has some kind of crazy two qb system he is planning to implement.

I say they should get four more and field an all-QB offense.

Yes, we would like Bruce, the Polish Popgun Gradkowsi to move on as well as Chris, I put my spleen on the field for you but still get my passes batted down on the line, Simms.
Failed experiments and I’m sure Bruce Allen was trying to shop Simms all weekend. I don’t dislike Chris, and wish him the best for the future, but it’s time to move on at One Buc Place.

Simms will be the starting QB in Miami by the end of the year. Parcells is just waiting for the Bucs to release him.

Gradkowski will probably get cut. Plummer is gone.
Johnson gets at least a year if he doesnt screw up.
But i still think Simms will get a chance to compete with Griese and McCown for the backup job if he doesnt get traded before camp.
In the end they’ll probably keep 4 QBs again.

In high school, John Gruden’s locker was pasted with pictures of Dan Marino, Roger Staubach and Jim Plunkett. Monte Kiffin is planning an “intervention” later this week. His obsession with QBs is comparable to Mini Me’s love for chocolate.

Maybe they should cut them all and get one real QB.
