We have defended, and will continue to defend, the Cincinnati Bengals for their stance regarding receiver Chad Johnson’s desire to be traded.
We do so because the best way to keep other players from trying to pull the same routine in the future is to not cave in to Chad now.
Another prudent strategy to achieve the same end, however, would be to refrain from bringing in more players who might be inclined to misbehave in the future. In this regard, we can’t support the Bengals’ tactics.
As a league source opined with respect to several of the team’s 2008 draft picks, the Bengals “are up to their old tricks.”
The most glaring selection was Jason Shirley, a defensive tackle from Fresno State.
Shirley was ultimately kicked off the team in 2007 after a series of incidents, including a suspension for conduct detrimental to the team and a suspension for a DUI arrest. The last straw was an arrest for driving with a suspended license.
The source said that Shirley was off most teams’ draft boards.
Per the source, teams also had concerns about Auburn defensive tackle Pat Sims and Kansas offensive tackle Anthony Collins. A Google search revealed that neither player has had any trouble with the law, however.
It has been explained to us in the past that the Bengals will take a player like Shirley not because the team doesn’t know about his off-field troubles but because the team’s lack of a full-blown scouting department makes the Bengals more likely to pick a player who had the talent to otherwise be drafted much earlier.
Put simply, the Bengals will be more inclined to take the player who generally is regarded as highly talented later in the draft because they lack confidence in their ability to pick a guy who isn’t generally recognized as having the physical talent to play in the NFL.

If the Bengals traded Chad, other players wouldn’t be able to pull the same stuff because those players can’t get the Bengals TWO FIRST ROUND DRAFT PICKS. I can’t believe the Bengals passed that up.
As for the Bengals picking Chris Henrys because they can’t find good players otherwise, that’s pretty hilarious.

Again, the Bengals continue to show the public reasons for why elite players like Chad Johnson and Levi Jones want to leave and why in this situation we should listen to these players rather than assume the usual ‘they just want more money than their signed contract” situation.

The Saints traded ahead of the Bengals again which may have swayed the Bengals hand in making this pick. Saints moved up 2 picks to grab DeMario Pressley a DT… then the Bengals picked one on the next pick. Wonder if the Saints FO knew the Bengals were going to draft him.

I think your article is a little over the top, considering that there were a lot of guys with questionable character drafted by other teams, and the Bengals take one out of 10, and you purposely blow it out of proportion. What about the high character guys they drafted like Rivers? This is one fifth round pick who may not even make the team, and Marvin Lewis already said they thoroughly investigated his legal problems before drafting him. To say they are “up to their old tricks” is stretching it by a mile.

When the eagles pick a player already arrested you call it a gamble and a possible steal. With the Bengals, you call it old tricks. Take a look at their record as against the steelers or others. How come no mention of the steelers as a bunch of woman beaters??

Spot on by Folrio, as usual. You can’t cut Chris Henry and take a firm stance against Ocho Psycho when you pull a stunt like this one. Marvin Lewis must be climbing the walls. Why would anyone ever take a head coaching job there?

You pull a behemoth like Shirley in, after explaining to him how it’s gonna be on the phone, and give him one shot. If he gets his sh*t together, you get a beast in the middle of your defensive line. If he screws up, you say goodbye and don’t feel bad about wasting one of ten draft picks on a roll of the dice. Collins is a project, admittedly but nowhere I’ve seen is there mention of his conduct being an issue. That goes for Sims as well. Bengals actually have a pretty nice draft put together for once- with Rivers, Simpson, Sims, Caldwell, Collins, and Lynch, not even counting Shirley, Mario Urrutia, or Angelo Craig.

The scouts theory sounds good, however the Bengals are actually decent at finding 2nd day gems. Aside from the obvious of TJ Housh being a 8th round pick, Ndukwe was 7th round pick in 2007 that is penciled in as a starter this season. Jeff Rowe a 5th round pick in 2007 looks solid as a backup QB. Peko is a starting DT from the late 4th round of ‘06 and Kilmer and Brazell were both 7th round picks that are still on the team. The ‘5 draft had Ghiaciuc in the 4th (starting center), Fanene (possible starting DT in ‘08) in the 7th, and Tab Perry last years 3rd receiver and signed by Miami this offseason in the 6th. In ‘04 Draft starting DE Robert Geathers and franchise tagged OG/OT Stacey Andrews were both picked in the 4th. The 2003 draft was pretty ugly, but they still managed a probowl FB in Jeremi Johnson in round 4. Florio, how does this compare with other teams in the league with more scouts? Just curious.

This is getting to be ridiculous. Why do you keep piling on the Bengals? They accumulated 22 turd points for all of 2007. 9 of those points were assigned to Chris Henry for not wearing a seat belt, turning without a turn signal, and driving with a suspended license which was re-instated at that time. Many other teams had 2 and 3 times as many turd points. Why aren’t these teams attacked for all their violations? Why single out the Bengals? I can only imagine the huge criticism if they picked McFadden, yet no one mentioned a word about Oakland. What about Chicago, Denver, Tampa, Dallas, Oakland, Miami, Jacksonville, Minnesota, Tennessee and San Diego? Check it out. These teams have accumulated many, many turds, yet they are not criticized. The Bengals discarded all but 2 or 3 turds. They now have more good character players than most of the other teams in the NFL. Please make note of that fact. Be fair and objective in your editorials. And how about mentioning some of the other turds collected in this draft? Be fair and balanced…Please!

Wait a second there, hotshot. The Cowboys have accumulated -0- turd points since the inception of the “Turd Watch” and haven’t had a player arrested in the last five years. Have the Bengals been able to go 5 weeks without a player getting arrested in the past few years? “Only 22 points” haha

“Sure, you can tell by the one winning season they’ve had since 1991.”
Right Coach, and the entire reason is they have a couple less scouts than the next club? No other reason? Why not just respond, “oh yeah, well you’re ugly!”
The Bengals had consecutive years sub-.500 from 1997-2002, how about these clubs that all had more consecutive losing seasons; is it all because they lacked scouts:
Tampa (’83-’96), Saints (’67-’78), Cardinals (’85-’93), Colts (’79-’96), Rams (’90-’98), Falcons (’83-’90), NYG (’73-’80), Bears (’69-’75), Broncos (’66-’72), Lions (’84-’90 and ‘01-’07), Pats (’67-’73), Eagles (’67-’73), Chargers (’70-’76), and there are 6 other teams tied with Cinci including the Steelers.
So the lone reason all these franchises had a poor stretch was due to the scouting department? Brilliant. Why doesn’t every club just hire a thousand scouts. There are many reasons the Bengals have failed but again finding gems in the later rounds since ‘2004 (the time that has coincided with the increased arrests) has not been the issue. I’ll ask again, how has the Bengals retainment rate for second day picks since ‘04 compared to the rest of the league? Maybe its more of an issue that they are keeping second day guys instead of improving themselves via free agency.

Corey Lynch is a Team Captain who is married to Billy Graham’s granddaughter and has a physics degree.
Keith Rivers is a team captain at USC and is three classes away from his college degree.
Jerome Simpson is a team captain and is a very high character guy.
Matt Sherry has his college degree and has never had any problems with the law.
I cannot speak for Anthony Collins but he does not appear to have had any run ins with the law.
As to Pat Sims, he is a “character concern” because he quit football his sophomore season because his half-sister (who he called MOM) died of a heart attack at the age of 34 years old and he felt nothing had any meaning any more. Scouts questioned his dedication to football, I just mark that down to being a human being. He came back to the team as a junior and has been a model player since.
Jason Shirley is a knucklehead but then again so is James Hardy, Mario Manningham, Malcom Kelly, Stanford Kegler, Carl Nicks, Aqib Talib, and Darren McFadden (all went significantly before Shirley in the draft). They drafted 5 Team Captains and 9 Guys with no history of any illegal activity and they draft one fifth round player who likes to drive into apartment buildings and all of a sudden they are “up to their old tricks”? The 2005 draft was an unmitigated distater after Thurman, Henry, Rucker, and Nicholson had significant legal issues but selecting one 5th rounder who had some disapline problems that they could easily jettison if he cannot reign himself in, does not a “bad character draft” make.
