The New Orleans Saints and their second-round pick (No. 40 overall) in this weekend’s draft have long been linked to the Giants and their double-fisted Super Bowl suite drinker Jeremy Shocker.
But now the Saints and that same second-round pick are linked to the Eagles and their obsolete cornerback Lito Sheppard, who surely won’t be kept around given the arrival of Asante Samuel.
According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Saints are one of the five teams chasing Sheppard. Others include the Bucs and the Rams. However, the Rams are reluctant to give up their second-round pick, which is No. 33 overall.
As to the Saints, they can’t trade the same pick twice (duh), so what are they up to? Our guess is that they’re trying to play two NFC East rivals against each other, hoping that one of them takes the Saints’ second-rounder in order to prevent the other from getting it.
Or maybe, as a reader suggested, the Saints are merely the straw man in a three-way trade. Maybe they’ll get Sheppard with that second-round pick and then trade him straight up to the Giants for Shockey.

I think the FO is gonna wait until the last second to make sure the move their making is the best possible move…the question is, do we want the Bucs 2nd? (which is in the upper 50’s i think) and Michael Clayton….or the saints pick (40) which we could use to draft one of the top 3-4 receivers, theres bound to be at least one there at 40…
im still not thrilled with either deal but it seems a high 40 is the best we’re gonna get for lito. and to think i believed we were getting chad =[

I wish we could trade Lito for Shockey. I know we just franchised L.J but if we can’t get our veteran #1 why not a top 3-5 tight end that could stretch the field.
eh? EH?

I wouldn’t trade Shockey for Lito. Shockey is a drunken cancer. Lito is a young CB. I think Lito is a better all around CB then Asante Samuel. Samuel was a product of the Pats system. Lito can play man, where Samuel is a good zone CB.

this makes no sense for the saints. in the end, they gave up a 2nd, and they got shockey. so why be the staw man for no reason, why don’t they just do the deal straight up? why go and burn that bridge with the eagles who they have a good relationship with? you know lurie banner and reid would hold a grudge till the day they die should be scorned. they’re not exactly good sports. so, what are the saints getting in return for being the middle man, why not just do the deal straight up?
the giants would have to give the saints more than shockey, which now on their end, makes no sense either. this is a load of pre-draft baloney.

I hope the Eagles sign Shockey. That would be, what, a dozen TEs on the roster? Afterall, LJ Smith is the answer, right???
bwahahaha

The Saints would be well served trading that pick for Lito over Jeremy Shockey. Jeremy has long been over rated after showing great potential early in his career.
The Saints have needed a true shut down corner for some time and have tried other players like Jason David to get it. This would solve their problem and if Lito stays healthy for them, it would go down as a genius trade.

Why would you choose a name like the patriots cheated? Herm Edwards knew for years the Pats were taping him. He used to wave at the camera. Yet, he never went crying to the league that the Pats and BB were cheaters? Why? Herm’s been around this league for what 30+ years. Coached against BB never had any issues! Guess what, Herm did say in the KC Star that they didn’t “cheat in free agency”! By extensions an he’s saying that the Buc’s and Rams signed players they had targetted in FA! I’m sure the archive is still avaiable if your interested in looking it up.
What’s more important, stealing a signal that had a 1% effect on the NEXT game or actually stealing another teams players. I’ll leave it to the rightious to figure that one out!

What? Shockey’s barely a top 3 TE in the division. I’d take Witten and Cooley over him any day and twice on Sundays.

Who cares? Doesn’t change the fact that the Pats cheated.
