If/When the Bengals trade Chad I will be happy if it is a fair trade. The Redskins trade was not fair, a 1st and a 3rd? You can't count on incentives to upgrade the pick.

I stand behind Marvin and Mike because it is better for the long term outlook for my favorite team. The Media can do whatever they wish, but Mike will not be bullied.

As far as the respect in the locker room, yeah I do think that it has had an effect. I ran into one of the Bengals DEF players at work the other day and he had nothing but bad things to say about Chad, and only good about what Marvin was doing.

How does he help you sitting out? There are at least 10 teams that would give you something "fair" for his contract.

Suppose he takes it all back and shows up the first day of camp, do you think the coaches really still want him there running his mouth or just sulking and pouting like a 7 year old?

He played his heart out for you, he just wants to move on. What is so wrong with that? Why is forcing him to retire or return the best option? He is 30, has a good contract and other than pleading his case to the media has not bad mouthed anyone in Cincy.

What is the point of the message, and do you really believe Marvin has more "respect" or percieved value to the rest of the team and locker room than Ocho? I don't stink so.

Marvin would be upgraded easily and immediatly if your GM was not a joke. He is a decent coach, but once you lose credibility as GURU, you can't win it bag with a bunch of words or taking a stand.

The precedent has also really been set. The media is going to run with this story until Ocho is free. He has so much more charisma than T.O. or Keyshawn or Willis McGahee, Portis, Moss, Eli Manning, Billy Volek, or one of the dozens of veteran players who quitly or not so demanded to be traded and were.

Get something other than a headache and more national embarassment than usuall while you still can.

To Jeremiah W:

Here is why it makes sense for the Bengals to keep Chad;

1. Marvin has already re-gained the respect of the players that was lost on that playoff Sunday where someone had someone else in a headlock and punches may/may not have been thrown.

2. So far, no one has offered a fair trade for Chad.

3. It sends a message to not only players of the Bengals organization but also to other players that franchises will no longer be held hostage while a millionaire complains about his money.

4. It shuts Chad up, one way or the other, in the long run. I do not care about "soap opera's" or "controversies" or any other form of what the media is painting it out to be. There are 2 options, play or sit. Either way Chad will have to eat his words.

Now, let me ask you how it makes sense for us to trade him just because he's been a good player for us?

to make a statement, they should keep him.

However, if they've really been offered two first round picks, it would be in the best interests of the organization to deal him. Hell, even a first and a third would be beneficial. Chad is not going to be happy. Trading him is giving in, but it's also getting rid of a cancerous growth and getting handsomely compensated for it.

I think it's time that Commissioner "Good"-ell does something about ruthless bastard agents like that drug abuser Rosenshit. Not that Chad can't be a sh-t on his own. I think that Rosenbastard has as much or more to do with this as does Ocho Stinko. It's time for Goodell to clean up the world of crooked agents that represent NFL Players. This can only improve the game.
Based on Rosenshit's past history of making a mockery out of the league during the T.O. fiasco in Philthydelphia and the influence he has had with Ocho Psycho, I believe he should be suspended from representing players for the next two years. If it's good enough for Odell Thurman it's good enough for Drew Rosen Superdick Agent.
So Mr. Commissioner the ball is in your court. Are you going to continue to let Drew Rosenhaus make a mockery out of your league or are you going to do something about it? And oh by the way, one can surmise that Rosenhaus has had contact with the Skins concerning Chad or he wouldn't be pushing for this trade. So now it could be a question of tampering. Mr. Commissioner, take care of this situation before it ruins your league.
Note to Mr. Florio: I would hope that you would bring this issue up somewhere in the media, since you have much more clout than any of us out here in internet land. Please excuse the language, I was venting.

One Bungle brain please explain how it is better to keep this circus going all season, or have Ocho retire, than it would be to actually get something for him?

What message are you trying to send, don't sign with the Bungles if you have a chioce.

Look at the Steelers, they let guys go who don't want to be there and they don't stink every season. Fanneca is better than any Bungle lineman and they let him walk away.
The Ravens let Adalius Thomas, Tony Pashos and Ovie Mughelli walk away as free agents because they have a GM that understands how to manage a slalary cap and use draft picks to replace the good players who get top dollar on the open market.

Don't be bitter Bungle fans. Free Ocho Stinko. He has done well for you for years, and if you trade him for a couple of picks, he can help you for years after he all washed up.

All you knuckleheads that are defending Chad's right to quit the Bengals, since the Bengals can cut him, need to read how it all works in the story written by Florio at the above link. The Bengals paid over $20 million dollars up front, guaranteed, for the right to cut Chad if they want to, and all he has to do is gather up all that money and leave. Then he can sign with another team for a $40 million dollar, up front, guaranteed signing bonus, etc, etc.

If you still don't get the point, you probably don't get the point about Mario Manningham's Wonderlic score.

I think it's hilarious to read "IF I was a Bengals fan..."

From what I can tell, Bengals fans responses are firmly in support of Mr. Brown.

I understand the point being made about winning football games and drafting good players and all the other comments that lead to the conclusion being, trade Chad Johnson. But these premises do not lead to that conclusion. The argument the Cincinnati franchise and fans have with this particular situation is based on principle. Chad hired Drew and the fans were leary it would be a holdout situation. Drew quitely works out a fair contract for both sides behind the scenes and Chad is praised for not being a distraction. Two seasons later and Chad needs a new deal...again! If Chad wanted huge pay day every 2 years he should have a)played out his original deal and hit UFA or b)signed a shorter extension with less money up front to hit UFA sooner.

It's a very simple deal for those of us with stripes on our back, we are fed up with being the laughing stock. Whether it's a win in principle or on the field I want my team to win.

As for those who think Chad has lost the fans I would submit again how much I love watching Chad play and would welcome him back at this point.

Rebel2124,

I agree with everything you said except about the contracts. For a myriad of reasons trading Chad Johnson now is the only sensible decision for the Bengals, but if you allowed players to walk away from contracts at anytime (similar to how the teams can cut a player) you would take away the tiny bit of leverage the teams do have. In my opinion that would be a disaster and the inmates would really take over the asylum.

Chad use to say who can cover number 85. Well the water boy can when he is sitting on the bench and his agent Drew Rosenhaus. Is losing money for his client. I say to the Bengals let him sit a year if he wants. Then next year is aanother NFL team want him then nogotiate. So Ocho stinko just sit on the Bench.

As a football fan that does not root for the Bengals, I love what Lewis is doing and its great to see someone finally take a stand against these greedy players.

If I were a Bengal fan, I'd be FURIOUS at any team officials that turn down a chance to get TWO prime draft picks in exchange for cutting a cancer/distraction.

How does he even have to "tamper" with anything? There are 4 or 5 teams out there telling the media they want to trade for him. drew just has to sit back and wait for common sense to sink in to Bungle braintrust. Something is always better than nothing a feeling proud of looking like a moron over principle.

How about the fact that Chad would rather retire than continue to collect chacks from the Bungles?

He does not want Bungle money, he wants to play for championships and a chance at the HOF. No amount of Bungle money is going to buy him that.

The Bengals are doing the right thing, if he doesn't want to play then he doesn't have to. They should reject all offers publicly and make it public how much money they can reclaim from him and how much money he will forfeit over the year in lost bonuses and game checks and fines.

Rosenhaus is an idiot, he is lying through his teeth so he can get Chad Johnson to a new team and sign a new fat contract.

Chad never said anything about more money. He does have a contract that pays him well, he just no longer wants to be a Bungle.

Who can argue against that? This happens all the time in the NFL a guy just wants to play elsewhere. he does not like the coach the QB whatever, who cares what the reason is, he has not even said why.

Just let him go. Why risk keeping a guy around who has alienated the coach, the fans and players in the name of a stupid principle. They should not be able to get anything but finacial compesation for Chads exlusive football rights, but here they have an opportunity to replace him with 2 higher draft picks than they spent to get him.

How is it either fair or smart to try to force your best WR out of football instead of trading him or letting him buy his way out of his contract?

Chad has played his heart out for the lowly Bungles his entire NFL carreer, why must you try to punish him for wanting to move on?

What else has he done to deserve this type of hatorade? He always seemed pretty entertaining and harmless to me with his antics. T Sizzle's sack dance is more obscene than any of his stupid TD dancing.

Ocho, also wasn't a problem until TJ started to take some of his catches and more importantly spotlight away from Chad. It's not about winning, it never has been. It's about being numero uno in the spotlight.

-laughs-

Did you see the smug little smirk on Drew's face throughout the interview? That was classic.

I'm a lifelong Bengals fan and I wouldn't miss this entertainment for the world! Keep him right here and let these guys go out and make idiots of themselves on ESPN all this year and next year ;)

Thing is...if Chad sits all year that doesn't hurt his trade value. In fact it will just stoke the emotions of any team that covets him....additionally there is no injury risk to your asset if he doesn't play.

They have him signed for two more years. If the rumors of Chad's in house behavior is true and he's been publicly hawking himself as a "great guy" while he's been a train wreck privately, I have to think the guys in the locker room are enjoying this as much as me.

Mike and Marvin should stick to their guns on this one and let him retire. Hopefully this will stop all the future crybabies from crying when they don't like it anymore. You signed the contract....now honor it. The Bengals have been more tha generous with you Chad. Because you feel the Cincinnati media was to hard on you, you want out. Look what the New York media put Eli Manning through. What did he do....he shut up and played football...oh yah and he helped his team beat the undefeated New England Patriots in the Super Bowl. So, Chad.....Shut up and play or please just retire already.

This guy is a bigger jerk than his clients. He's trying to be tongue in cheek about "what's he's heard in the media reports" be you know that he's been talking to teams. They should go after him for tampering and even suspend him for a year to get him to understand that what he is doing has to end if he wants to keep doing business with the league and teams.

I am torn on whether the Bengals should keep Ocho Stinko. On one hand, I admire the Bengals for their unwillingness to bow down to Johnson and meet his demands. Their stance has seemingly won back the locker room as well as the Cincy community at large, especially considering all of the crappy characters they have had to deal with. I applaud their convictions in this matter.

On the other hand, is it worth bringing back a TO, part deux into the locker room? Will Johnson's outspoken behavior and negativity help build the "team" into a winner? In a word, no. If the Bengals want to build a true winner, they should shed themselves of these talented, yet troubled, players who contribute less to the overall functioning of the 10 other guys they play with on the field and more to themselves. Get rid of him, there are plenty of teams out there who would be more than happy to mortgage their future for a narcissistic, me-first scoundrel.

Teams can cut a man and part ways at any time. I think it's an unfair practice to not allow a player to do the same. Do you really want to retain a player that doesn't want to be there anyway? I think you get more from a player who is passionate about playing for you than from the ones who are only there for money. And what message does this send to future signees? If I were a player I would certainly now, think twice about signing with the Bengals or at least only sign a contract that allows me to opt out at any time. Trade him, get everything you can for him and be done with it.

On principal, no the Bengals should not trade Chad Johnson.

But this isn;t about principal it's about business. And they have to get rid of him if they want any chance at competing in the NFL. Let's all understand that Chad will show up when it's time to earn the paychecks. So the Bengals cannot force Chad to retire or sit out the season. He will show up, he will be a distraction, and the Bengals will have to pay him. Ignoring silly comments I read like placing him on the non-football related injury list etc., the Bengals have 3 choices: (1) Stick to their guns and keep Chad knowing they will not get his best performance, he will be a distraction to other players affecting their performance and they will have to pay him millions of dollars for this. (2) Cut him. (3) Trade him now and get something of value to help the team. (understanding that the longer this drags out the lower his trade value is).

Now, if you realize that the Bengals realisticly only have 3 viable courses of action which of the 3 makes any sense??? (assuming the Bengals organization is actually trying to put the best possible product on the field for its players and fans - and I realize that assumption is a stretch)

The Patriots took that road a couple of years ago with Branch. It worked out in the long run (traded for #1 pick), but if you remember that year, they were booted in the playoffs due to lack of quality receivers. I distinctly remember watching a potential TD pass bounce off the numbers of Bug-Eye Caldwell and landing on the turf.

Bengals fans should file a class action suit against Rosenhaus for tortius interference in CJ's contract with the Bengals (e.g. his contact with the Redskins), with their standing stemming from the millions the fans spend on season tickets.

The NFL should open a tampering investigation pulling all electronic records from all Rosenhaus, Johnson, and Redskins associations.

The outcome should be that Rosenhaus and the Redskins pay out millions is damages; the Redskins forfeit 3 1st Round picks, and Rosenhaus is placed on probation (and banned if future violations occur) for tampering, or facilitation of tampering.

I'd put Chad on the non-football related injury list and sit his butt for a year or two. He dosen't appear to be emotionally stable enough to play a team sport. Maybe after a year of chillin' he'll grow up and recognize the opportunity he's wasted.

I am so sick of everyone calling Mike Brown a genius for not giving into Chad's demands. No one really thought Chad would get traded because he was bringing down his trade value by putting the Bengals in the corner and trying to force a trade. Now when an offer with real value has come forward, they shoot it down. This is a prime example of how Mike Brown's management of this franchise is botching any chances they will have of a Super Bowl run in the near future. While it is nice to see someone stick to their guns on something, you have to pick your battles. And winning this battle will not benefit the Bengals at all. Morale victories don't bring you any closer to a Super Bowl. The Bengals are a franchise destined for NFL mediocrity (or worse) until they stop with the family business and run the organization like a football franchise.

First of all I am not sure what Chad's problem is. He just signed a contract not too long ago so it better not be about money. I thought at first it was about the team and it's ability to win (like that of Takeo Spikes and Corey Dillion) but in reality the Bengals have the ability to compete for the playoffs ao Chad needs to shut-up and help make his team better so that they can compete. It's not like the Bengals are as pathetic as they used to be. If it is something else like a certain person in the organization that he doesn't like (Marvin Lewis maybe) then he needs to work it out face to face with that person. Because in all reality Johnson has no real leverage in this matter. It's not like he can sit out most of this year then play the last few games and become a free agent. The Bengals hold all the cards because they got to pay him whether he is there or not and if he sits out they can at least get money back. I think the Bengals should call his bluff and let him sit this year. They can always trade him next year.

My 2nd point is to those that try to stick up for Chad and talk about how owners can just get rid of players without penalty. Well when a guy like Johnson signs a contract for 20-30 million signing bonus they get that money no matter what unless they do something that breaks the contract. So if a guy under performs or gets injured and the team cuts him they still have to pay that 20-30 million they, don't get off scott free. How would you like to pay someone that kind of money and get nothing in return for it? The reason the NFL has signing bonuses and other guranteed money payments is because they don't have guaranteed contracts. And usually if a player outperforms his rookie contract a team is willing to give them a raise. The problem comes when a guy is a free agent and he gets a contract that makes him the highest paid player at his position but then a couple years down the road somebody else gets more so the previous player feels like he should get more and then he starts becoming a problem. Ultimately though Rosenhaus has become the biggest problem because most of the players that are/were complaining are his clients. (T.O., Johnson, McGahee, etc...)

I cant believe Rosenhaus would say "Please trade him it would make Chad very happy." Who cares if he is happy? This is the lamest approach by an agent I have ever seen. Why cant the NFL ban players from using this idiot. Its people like him that ruin all that is great about sports. I think Marvin could have helped this problem along time ago but he didnt. Make the idiot sit out. I am one of many Bengal fans that cant stand Chad Johnson. Ive never gone from liking a player so much from wishing he would never play again. Go play soccer Chad like youve always talked about doing.

It's time for a team in the NFL to stand up for their rights as a team in forcing a player to actually honor their contract. While contracts have been structured to protect players by providing them with guaranteed money up front, there is not enough protection in place against players acting like complete douches (e.g. Chad Johnson). These players bitch and moan and cause problems until their team realizes they can't stand to have them around anymore and are forced to trade them. And then, knowing the situation the Bengals are in, why would I trade them full value knowing that Chad doesn't intend to suit up for them? It's just wrong.

Chad, you and Drew negotiated your contract with the Bengals, you signed for a set number of years and for a specific amount of money. Play out your contract, shut your mouth and do your job.

Trade him. It's not about prinicipal, it's a sound buisness and football decision. His value will never be this high again as a bengal. He won't sit out this year, but he will be a serious distraction and will not be productive, and he's at the pinical of his career in terms of age (and mental health). Get as much as you can for him to build for the futre. All of the arguements against doing so are week. 1. Cap hit. Have some other guys restructure, or trade picks to move up this year (and snag ellis or dorsey) and get another first round next year. 2. Others will want more money and try similar antics. Others have done this in the past with the Bengals and having to wait out their contracts did not quell the issue with Chad. It created more disfunction and a poor attitude detracting from locker room coherence and ensuring lossing ways. 3. Mikey Boy is proving a point to the rest of the league. Mike is being Mike and the PR is positive for him on this one. This is the perfect storm for him. Positive national outlook without having to do anything. It maybe good for the league, but it's bad for a team trying to win, which his actions dictate is not his concern.

Does anyone think it's a coincidence that Rosenhaus represents both TO and Ocho Stinco? I would bet big money that he is behind this whole fiasco. Agents need to held accountable for the actions of their clients and themselves. When a team talks to an agent about a player that is the "property" of another team, I think the agents are the ones who initiate contact or start the rumors about their clients being unhappy. The agents get their commission on every new deal that's done, so why not create a little animosity in order to get a new deal.

I have not read all of your replies so I apologize if this is a repeat but who is the QB of the Bengals? Palmer, good, so far you have scored higher than Manningham... Next who is the QB of the Redskinns? Good,Campbell... 2 for 2, so far you can graduate Michigan... So, do you really think a QB of a completely different caliber will be able to pass to him? I do not think so... I hope he goes to the redskins and blows up!

Bengal have been off-sides with League office for too long.

If you're Mike Brown do you take this one back to League and seek 'clarification'. Is there any NFL concern about players becoming the stars and teams just the laundry?

NFL may want to throw Bengal a break if they choose to sit him

i havent read all these comments but has anyone thought that the reason they wont trade him is that we play the nfc east this year. it would be horrible for him to catch a td and win a game that kept us out of the playoffs (i am being hopefull). we play at dallas oct 5th, host eagles nov 16th and host redskins dec 14th. just a thought. i kinda like the idea of him sitting all year but we could use the pics and never spend all the cap money anyhow (see cheap owner). i still love the bengals as they are my home town team, and i will remain hopefull.

As a biased Raven fan I want to see Ocho set free for my own reasons, but in principle I agree with him.

Why should he be forced to "honor" a one sided contract? because Gene Upshaw said so? F that. The precedent has already been set by T.O. and MeShawn. Holding the line here is only going to pull back the curtian at how gangster an operation the union cba bs is under don upshank break yer freakin head rather than have a conversation over dinner with a broken down bitter former player.
Forget about it.
Take your money Ocho they are not going to just give it to you. F the CBA, F the Bungles, F Upshaw. F God Dell.
They are goint to try and send a message by forcing you to be a Bungle for life? For what? What is the message, dont sign long term contracts. Don't talk to the media? Shut up and play? F that message.

Free your speech and the Bungles will be forced to set you free. Fire Upshaw and change the CBA. Get TJ to hold out with you. What does he make like 2 mil per for a perrenial pro bowl WR?

The Bungles should just move to LA. The crimes they commit in Cincy are mostly legal there I think. Ocho Stinko could get some side money pretending to be pimp or some stereo typical jiggabo type clownwhore for Madam Holly.

the Bengals are being stubborn stupid. Get off the stupid train. A first and a third for a guy who doesn't want to be there and may not play this season anyway? Daft.

must post again. This WILL become a major league wide issue. Yes many players do not have guaranteed contracts, but if they are injured, they have all of their subsequent medical treatments paid for. All teams have staff that try to help all players develop future plans for the money they are paid while in the league. And, are these players not "college students" who have been given magnificent opportunities to get a free education, something that most of us, or our children, have not been given. To use reverse logic, maybe all professional athletes should have their contracts evaluated on a yearly basis and have their contracts lowered for poor years, years they didn't produce due to injury etc. The bottom line is we have very rich people (owners) playing games with rich people (players). Even the entry level salary is much greater than the vast majority of college graduates earn in their first years. And by the way, gas is $3.50 a gallon and food prices are rising sharply. Why should we should we put so much time and effort on these rich asses.

This is like watching two speeding trains rumble towards each other. Go Bengals!

How obvious did Rosenhaus make it that he has been talking to teams behind the scenes?

The Bengals should look into any tampering done by the Redskins and bring down the hammer on anything they find. They should suspend Chad for conduct detrimental to the team, pursue any and all money they are entitled to get back and then trade him to a team in the NFC where they will not have to face him more than once a year.

look here the deal Bungles, The Browns ( yes the Brownnies) are a better football team then you now and they are gorwing..... thats just sad. if you dont dump Chad and get the picks to rebuild your poor excuse for a team you are going to be the laughing stock of the NFL. and take over the browms role. from a business stand point sometimes you gotta cut your losses and move on

Drew Rosenhaus is a turd, Chad Johnson is a turd. What I saw was a millionaire begging on the steps of the Bengals' organization doorstep...DR has no pride.

Looks like a record in posts to me, one a minute for an hour.

Chad hasnt acted up ? end zone bs ? blaming everyone else for his drops ?

oh... and... choking one coach, swinging at another, and making it impossible for them to win a playoff game they were leading at the time ? all because he thought he was being used as a decoy.

First off, this isn't about Chad Johnson's contract. He wants out of Cincinnati AND he wants to keep that big contract. Has Johnson said anything to the effect that he would welcome getting cut and give up the contract that puts him as one of the highest paid WR's in the league? If he has, I haven't seen the quotes. He wants to have his cake and eat it, too.

If the Bengals trade Johnson, then they have just shown all the other players in that organization how to leverage their way out of Cincinnati - bitch, piss, moan, throw temper tantrums, go on radio during Super Bowl week doing those things, and have your agent produce jacked up YouTube videos pleading for a trade (not to get cut from the team, a trade... then you still get to keep that contract).

It's getting to the point where this is not going to end well for Chad Johnson. He needs to re-evaluate his ego and tone the whole PR campaign down.

If the reports are true that Marvin Lewis has won back the locker room after his comments about Johnson, then the Bengals now have even more incentive to break it off in Johnson's a$$ and not give in to his crying and tantrums. Especially if it brings the locker room closer together.

I think Chad and Drew are both a couple of whiners...but if the Bengals were smart, and they could get a 1st round pick this year, and a second round pick next year...then they should do it...Two first round picks this year could really help rebuild this team.
