The ongoing Chad Johnson-Cincinnati Bengals saga continues.
The most recent development is a video plea from agent Drew Rosenhaus to the Bengals, in which he pleads with the team to trade Johnson. Here’s the video:
Clearly, the plan here is to stoke the fans and the media into continuing to pressure the Bengals to accept the reported offer of a first-round pick in 2008 and as much as another second-rounder in 2009 from the Redskins.
But the Bengals aren’t budging. During a spot with Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton of WFAN earlier this morning, Boomer offered up a great idea — the Bengals might be inclined to let Johnson go if he offers to pay back signing bonus money.
Even then, however, we’re not so sure that team president Mike Brown would bite. He’s out to make a point on this one, and it’s very possible that no amount of money or draft picks will change his mind.
So what say you, PFT Planet? Should the Bengals keep him, or should they trade him?

what a douche…I especially liked the part about “i haven’t talked to any other team, I don’t have permission.” Sure, I believe that.

Pride goes before the fall.
It would be moronic to hold onto this guy and lose him as a UFA when they can (a) get a problem out of the locker room and (b) get draft picks to do it.
The Bengals have nothing to gain by hanging onto this guy. Keeping him means giving up on the season. What kind of message does that send to fans?

Get rid of him.. He’s a pain in the a@@ and bound to do nothing but bring the rest of the team down. How about swinging a trade for a young, big DT (like Askew) and some draft picks? Surely if the skins what the headache badly enough, they would work out a deal!?

Does anyone else want a Drew Rosenhaus doll that we can stab with safety pins and light on fire? The fact that he even thought to use the word objectively disgusts me. Next, Drew is going to push for Jerome McDougle is get a new deal with incentives for getting shot while being robbed in his SUV in South Florida…

I agree with gdiersing - this is going to be a soap opera (guess who’s the drama queen).
OTOH, the Bengals can avoid Matt’s slippery slope by trading Chad - but for as little as possible, to show how little they they of him; maybe for a 7th in 2009.
Sure it would hurt the team, but it would show who’s da boss! That’s apparently what’s most important to the Bungles’ brass. Otherwise they’d jump on the Skins’ offer, or anything approaching it.

Can we make a McDonald’s commercial out of all this? Because I am LOVING IT!
Let me say that I am a huge Chad fan, I have 4 different jerseys of his, multiple posters and bobble heads and all of that crap. I would now sell it all for a dollar to see Chad have to retire. It’s absolute BS that a “man” could actually hold an entire franchise hostage.
Rosenhaus is the best in the biz for his clients, but he is ruining the league. How many more players sign with him after all the negative publicity they get? When Rosenhaus visited with a local station on a show featuring CJ I called in and let Rosenhaus know that I would give him a chance but that I hated how he had become Chad’s agent. He promised the fans of Cincy years ago that “There is no holdout planned, there is no reason to hold out, we just signed an extension to keep Chad a Bengal for his entire career.” I knew it that night as I know it now, Rosenhaus is the cancer, he is the problem.
Here’s a statement I never thought I would write:
MIKE BROWN FOREVER!!!! FULL SUPPORT!!!!!

Absolutely keep him. If he wants to play fine. If he doesn’t fine. I fully support the Bengals making a point of this. I am SICK and TIRED of these highly paid babies getting anything and everything they want just by bitching and moaning and crying about it.
It’s time for them to act like professionals, just like EVERY other highly paid individual has to do in this country (with the exception of these idiot Hollywood stars and starlets and that’s a WHOOOOLE other story).

As a devout Redskins fan, please Bengals DO NOT TRADE CHAD JOHNSON. He is overrated and a pain to cheer for. Roy Williams, Fitzgerald or Boldin would all be better fits.

Unfortunately, as much as I’d love to see the Bengals make an example of Chad by not letting him “cry like a little bitch and get what you want”, they need to better their team by getting the draft picks. It’s a no brainer.

As a Redskins fan, I would like to thank Mr. Brown for not accepting the trade offer for Chad Johnson. The Redskins are once again mortgaging their future for an aging veteran. A first this year and a conditional 3rd next year that can end up a 1st in 2009 based on performance is way too much to offer for a 30 year old WR. That means everything the Redskins said in the off season about having a better understanding about how to build a franchise has been a complete lie. Not to mention the financial impact that the trade would have on a franchise already behind the 8 ball when it comes to guaranteed money given to aging vets (see John Jansen, Randy Thomas). Bottom line is they possibly get 2 maybe 3 more years of quality play at a premium price. They can draft a WR this year with a first or second round pick with size (Malcom Kelly, Limas Sweed, jrody Nelson) at a much lower price and they have the additional picks to address REAL needs along both lines and secondary. I personally would hate to see CJ in burgundy and black (a la Jim Zorn’s introductory presser). I think it is just one more example of this franchise having no clue on how to built a winning team. Make a move for Roy Williams, the guy is young and talented and would have many more productive seasons for the Skins than CJ would. Just my opinion.

‘TO’ Chad’s butt and let him make a fool of himself (more of fool?). I love seeing Rosenhaus doing his Joe Pesci imitation. Glad to see Marvin finally making a stand, better late than never - this might be the beginning of a stronger united team (sort of a Shockey effect on the team when he was injured during the Giants Super Bowl run).

Greed does funny things. First, the player is offered a 5 year deal for an obscene amount of money. Player signs contract. Then player sees younger players signing contracts for the same amount of time, but for a markedly higher amount of money. Player begins to stew about the fact that an unproven is making way more money. Player begins to think that he deserves more. Player lobbies for renegotiation. Team refuses because player signed original contract for set length of time. Player feels “underappreciated” and goes public hoping the pressure will sway team.
Here’s the solution. Take the NBA route and assign a dollar amount to each draft pick and keep it reasonably the same. Then restructure the salary cap and pay players based on two factors: Length of time in league and performance. If they perform, they get paid, if they don’t, they don’t. (Much like golf). Players can still be offered signing bonuses, but this guaranteed money crap is getting out of hand too. Make them earn it based on incentives, etc. (I know it gets tricky with injuries, etc., but that’s what workers’ comp is for). Though this is far-fetched and will never happen, it is a logical solution to a problem that is becoming an epidemic.
If owners continue to cave to every whiny player this vicious cycle will continue ad infinitum. There are many people who would like to play a game for a living. Hell, I would do it for $100,000 a year. They need to realize how lucky they are and quit bitching. Rant over. For now.

If the Bengals force Ocho Psycho to buy his way out of the deal, then the coach and team still make a point. To get the money, the draft picks, and to relieve themselves of a disgruntled lunatic, is a win-win-win for the Bengals and a win for Johnson/Rosenhaus.
I’d get rid of him ONLY IF Ocho Psycho is willing to pay his way out and the bidding team is willing to give up a #1 and a high draft pick in this or next year’s draft.

Don’t let him go - make an example out of him - it costs nothing to the Bengals - they don’t have to pay him and they end up getting signing bonus money back… The next time a WR thinks they can pull something like this off then they’ll have a precedent… and it will suck… for them

In the dictionary, next to the word “opportunistic,” there’s a picture of Drew Rosenhaus. The guy is as slimy as it comes, but he admits it. He doesn’t care what anyone says about him except for his clients. His little speech was transparent, of course, but it serves a purpose. Don’t be shocked when he greases the wheels ju-uuuuuuuust enough to get the Bengals to realize that their stubborn stance is not in the best interest of the team. Chad has lost the fans. He’s lost the locker room. He’s lost the coaches. He needs to go. The Bengals cap number will be the same whether Chad sits or plays elsewhere. Don’t screw the whole team to spite one guy just because you know you’re right. Take the best offer and get some character guys in there who love to play. That will rekindle the fire that has been doused by CJ’s cancerous outbursts. Or stay on this path and welcome a new head coach in 9 months. Be smart, not just.

Chad will be back. He’ll apologize, he’ll get blasted by the fans, have a 3 touchdown game, and then both sides will marvel at what an amazing story of the human capacity for forgiveness and redemption this has been. When Carson’s throwing BB’s in the Superbowl this will all be a vague memory. Who dey!?!

All of this talk about Brown and the Bengals making a stand is a bunch of BS. It’s all well-and-good, but isn’t it the Bengals job to win football games? The Bengals have been the laughing stock of the league for basically the last decade. They need to get rid of Johnson and get what they can for him while he’s still worth something. I would love to see Chad sit out the season just to spite the Bengals.
If I were a Bengals fan, I would want this guy off my team. He’s a great player, but he’s only going to be a distraction. Take whatever draft picks you can get for him. A first round pick and a third (potentially first) round draft pick next year would be great. Or even a Lito Sheppard and a first would be even better. Get him out and move on to start rebuilding whatever team you have left.
