While I agree that Favre is mostly to blame for all this "unretirement" talk by little stupid hints he drops, the media (Florio included) does more than its fair to share to make this a big deal by posting little stories like this. The media takes little insignificant developments and comments and blows them up to huge deals with a lot of speculation. If the media stopped talking about Favre he would fade away, but he can't talk to ANYONE without every one of his words blown out of proportion.

Brett Favre retired. He held a convincing hour long press conference discussing his retirement. Favre and the Packers decided the game to retire his number. Although I'm sure Favre would love to play (and I would love to see him play some more), he's not coming back*. He is just being honest about his conflicted feelings.

* OK, he might come back if Aaron Rodgers gets hurt.

A total non-story. Just heard Jason Wilde of the Wisc. State Journal (who is their Packers beat writer) say on a local Wisconsin radio spot that they Packers did it (plus released some other players) so that they'd free up roster spots for draft picks and to be able to sign non-drafted free agents after the draft.

If/when Favre comes back, he can petition the league for re-entry (which will certainly be granted) and if a roster spot is needed, the lowest pleeb on the team who has no chance of making the roster will simply be released to free up the roster spot for #4.

He proved last year he can still play. What happens if he does not file and says he is unretired? Do they have to cut him to avoid paying him the 12 million?

Smart money says Florio will still be working (flogging) this angle 12 months from today. Give it a rest, man. Of course he's going to have a hard time saying it's 100% over. Marino, Jim Brown, Howie Long and others entertained comebacks loooong past their official retirement announcements. The stink isn't even out of his locker yet (and won't be for some time), so it stands to reason he'd still have second thoughts.

Brett wanted Ted Thompson to make moves to "win now" and he's not about to change his entire philosophy (building through the draft) and mortgage the future by signing players to exorbitant salaries and crippling the team in the coming years, ala Washington and Minniesoda.

How else should the GB management react? Not do anything? They are moving on because Favre has made it quite clear that he had RETIRED and will not be returning. I also don't think that scheduling the retirement of #4 is in any way a move on the Packers part of making sure that Brett doesn't return. The Packers would be foolish to not want him back another year...or two.

This could turn into a PR nightmare for the Packers if Favre indeed wants to return and they do not want him back and will not allow a trade. His comments on Letterman seemed to point to that if the right opportunity should arise close to the start of the season, he would be open to coming back. Is Atlanta listening?

Wasn't Favre one of the five best QBs last year? Why wouldn't they want him back? Unless they think Aaron Rodgers is the next coming of....Brett Favre....they are better off with him than without.

in watching this whole retirement unfold, I think that Brett wanted to play another year but he wanted to feel like the packers wanted him back, and Thompson doesn't have the "win now" philosophy that would have prompted him to make the free agent aquisitions to "win now" I think the packers will do ok this year, but I also think that Favre still wanted to play. "I know I can still play, I just don't think I want to."

Haven't the Packers already sent a pretty clear message by scheduling the retirement of Brett's #4 for the first game of the season. Nothing says you're a retired icon like making your jersey number off limits.

Man alive, people are gonna look silly when the season comes and goes without Favre. I doubt his wife would let him play another year. Shoot, they already canceled this year's charity softball tourney in GB.

I'm a huge Packer/Favre fan. Favre, please put this to rest. Enjoy the Snapper lawn tractor on your 400 acres in peace and quiet. I don't think he was insinuating he wanted to come back last night, but it'd be great if he would sh*t or get of the pot.
