A day after “retired” Packers quarterback Brett Favre dropped his strongest hint yet that when football season rolls around he might no longer wish to be “retired,” the team has possibly sent him a message by placing him on the reserve/retired list.
But it doesn’t mean that Favre has filed his retirement papers. He still hasn’t.
“The NFL does not require a letter for a player to be placed in a reserve/retired status,” G.M. Ted Thompson said. “Brett has announced his retirement publicly and this is simply a personnel transaction made to develop a roster opportunity for the Packers.”
It’s likely that the Packers are merely clearing out roster space in advance of the incoming surge of street free agents, who’ll be signed to contract after the draft.
Still, the move is sure to prompt speculation as to whether the team is trying to let Favre know that it’s not interested in having its preparations for the 2008 season be undermined by the question of whether, at some point, Brett will be back.
Some league observers think that the Packers don’t want him to return, and that under no circumstances would they ever trade him to another team.

I’m a huge Packer/Favre fan. Favre, please put this to rest. Enjoy the Snapper lawn tractor on your 400 acres in peace and quiet. I don’t think he was insinuating he wanted to come back last night, but it’d be great if he would sh*t or get of the pot.

They want Farve out? What gave you that idea? Retiring his jersey number in week one, perhaps?

Man alive, people are gonna look silly when the season comes and goes without Favre. I doubt his wife would let him play another year. Shoot, they already canceled this year’s charity softball tourney in GB.

Haven’t the Packers already sent a pretty clear message by scheduling the retirement of Brett’s #4 for the first game of the season. Nothing says you’re a retired icon like making your jersey number off limits.

in watching this whole retirement unfold, I think that Brett wanted to play another year but he wanted to feel like the packers wanted him back, and Thompson doesn’t have the “win now” philosophy that would have prompted him to make the free agent aquisitions to “win now” I think the packers will do ok this year, but I also think that Favre still wanted to play. “I know I can still play, I just don’t think I want to.”

Wasn’t Favre one of the five best QBs last year? Why wouldn’t they want him back? Unless they think Aaron Rodgers is the next coming of….Brett Favre….they are better off with him than without.

This could turn into a PR nightmare for the Packers if Favre indeed wants to return and they do not want him back and will not allow a trade. His comments on Letterman seemed to point to that if the right opportunity should arise close to the start of the season, he would be open to coming back. Is Atlanta listening?

Florio…. this is a non story. The Packers also released 3 players to make room for draft picks.

How else should the GB management react? Not do anything? They are moving on because Favre has made it quite clear that he had RETIRED and will not be returning. I also don’t think that scheduling the retirement of #4 is in any way a move on the Packers part of making sure that Brett doesn’t return. The Packers would be foolish to not want him back another year…or two.

Brett wanted Ted Thompson to make moves to “win now” and he’s not about to change his entire philosophy (building through the draft) and mortgage the future by signing players to exorbitant salaries and crippling the team in the coming years, ala Washington and Minniesoda.

Smart money says Florio will still be working (flogging) this angle 12 months from today. Give it a rest, man. Of course he’s going to have a hard time saying it’s 100% over. Marino, Jim Brown, Howie Long and others entertained comebacks loooong past their official retirement announcements. The stink isn’t even out of his locker yet (and won’t be for some time), so it stands to reason he’d still have second thoughts.

He proved last year he can still play. What happens if he does not file and says he is unretired? Do they have to cut him to avoid paying him the 12 million?

A total non-story. Just heard Jason Wilde of the Wisc. State Journal (who is their Packers beat writer) say on a local Wisconsin radio spot that they Packers did it (plus released some other players) so that they’d free up roster spots for draft picks and to be able to sign non-drafted free agents after the draft.
If/when Favre comes back, he can petition the league for re-entry (which will certainly be granted) and if a roster spot is needed, the lowest pleeb on the team who has no chance of making the roster will simply be released to free up the roster spot for #4.

Brett Favre retired. He held a convincing hour long press conference discussing his retirement. Favre and the Packers decided the game to retire his number. Although I’m sure Favre would love to play (and I would love to see him play some more), he’s not coming back*. He is just being honest about his conflicted feelings.
* OK, he might come back if Aaron Rodgers gets hurt.

While I agree that Favre is mostly to blame for all this “unretirement” talk by little stupid hints he drops, the media (Florio included) does more than its fair to share to make this a big deal by posting little stories like this. The media takes little insignificant developments and comments and blows them up to huge deals with a lot of speculation. If the media stopped talking about Favre he would fade away, but he can’t talk to ANYONE without every one of his words blown out of proportion.
