Somehow, we missed this one.
But it’s better never than late. Or something.
A reader pointed out to us today a list of Wonderlic scores showing Michigan receiver Mario Manningham generating a Vince Young-style six on the test.
A six. Out of 50.
We checked with a league source who has access to the numbers and, lo and behold, Manningham indeed got a six.
For the former Michigan receiver, it’s another glob of lard that will grease his slide to the second day of the draft. Other knocks on Manningham include a sssslow time in the 40 and a failure to admit during interviews at the Scouting Combine the fact that he failed at least one marijuana test in college.
Manningham thereafter wrote a letter to all teams apologizing for his prevarication (thanks, Tiki). But maybe Manningham merely should have explained the falsehood by pointing out, “What did you guys expect? I got a six on the Wonderlic.”

He went to Michigan and got a SIX on the Wonderlic?
Michigan is (was?) a fine academic institution, one of the best state-run colleges in the country (with Cal and Virginia, etc.). Not too long ago you could count on all Michigan students, even the football players, to be reasonably intelligent. Guess that is no longer a requirement.

I have a seen an old copy of that test and still can’t fathom how a person scores a 6 on it. While it may not be as important for a WR as a QB, it says alot about the education these athletes get at the universities. If anything, more should be done to make sure those guys take the classes seriously especially for a football player. Their careers could be over at any time and they would need their education to fall back on to make sure they can get a decent job should that day come

Seeing that Manningham left after his junior season, I’m guessing that he didn’t graduate. Go back in the archives of http://www.collegefootballtalk.com and look for the Michigan articles about a professor giving out grades and I’d bet that Mario was one of his students.
The bigger questions are: Who is his agent? Why didn’t his agent have Manningham better prepared for - a) his workouts, b) national radio/TV interviews, c) answers about his Mary Jane usage, and d) HIS FREAKING WONDERLIC TEST!!! It’s 50 questions with a lot of the questions being multiple choice! Just by showing up and guessing at the questions he could score a 6. Then again, maybe that is exactly what he did.

If he catches touchdown passes everyone here will forget about the wonderlic score. There are many more inelligences than knowing word problems and adding numbers on a timed quiz. If he can run routes, catch, and stalk block, that is all I need him to do. Oh yeah, and not smoke pot and lie about it.

it’s obvious to me this kid has issues…like discipline, or the lack of, and
maturity. either his agent is an incompetent newbie or manningham blew off any advice before the combine…all the attributes coveted in the nfl…err, the unfl…

Basically, to get a 6 on a multiple choice test with 50 questions, odds would say you’d need about 10 options per question…and then you blindfold a squirrel and say “Take it!”
I want to give the test to someone flipping burgers at Wendy’s so Manningham can see how much progress he needs to make for his next career.

oh shutup and quit acting so childish over that darn test…if he was so dumb he wouldn’t have made it through all of his other levels of education or gotten that far in college…either way it goes, he’ll still be making tons more money than any of you GENIUSES who are putting him down

Hey guys, you know it is possible dumb as a sack full of hair and be a great football player. Does the name Emmitt Smith ring a bell? Joe Montana was never reknown as a rocket scientist either.
What kind of agent preps a kid for a wonderlic test? You only have so many hours in a day to prepare for the combine and when push comes to shove, bench press and vertical leap have a WHOLE lot more to do with getting drafted than your wonderlic score. Don’t put this on the agent, put this on the kid himself.
He’s a halfwit, so what?

As someone who has taken the Wonderlic (and scored significantly higher than Mario Manningham) i want to explain a little bit about the test.
The questions themselves are not that difficult. However, it is a timed test. You have 12 minutes to answer all 50 questions. (To be honest I did not complete the test, nor do most people. This is one of the tests that MENSA offers in order to qualify for membership - and i did qualify). If given enough time most people could answer all of the questions.
6 is a rough score. That I can not explain away. It still is better than Roger Vick’s score a few years back. However, the test is how quickly you figure things out, and how well you read the question.
There is a sample quiz on espn’s website. http://espn.go.com/page2/s/closer/020228test.html In order to mimic the Wonderlic, see how many of these questions you can answer in 3 minutes and 36 seconds.
Also - according to Joe Thiesman, Mario is certainly no Norman Einstein
