Are 90% of the members of this site Eagles fans? I am, and I'll be the 1st to say Winston Justice is a bust. Last year wasn't his rookie year, it was his 2nd. So its been two years and the only thing anybody can remember him doing is giving up 6 sacks in one game.

So far he has been a huge bust, but I wouldn't completely write him off. He has talent and a positive attitude.

I challenge any body to look at percentage of players that successfully transitioned to the NFL from college vs "busts" for schools that have sent at least 10 players to the NFL over the last 5 years. You will find that USC is at or near the top. I'm not going to rehash what everybody has already said here about the players labeled "bust" in this article, but I will direct you to look at Sedrick Ellis and Keith Rivers who are a given to be drafted in the top half of the first round! Is there any other school with two players rated that high? So, I don't really understand basis behind saying teams are shying away from USC players or the comments on here suggesting USC players are overrated.

That being said I do agree with the assessment that some of USC players are more into the fame (and money) than football. But that runs true all over the country. That is why there are so many busts, because once they make it, they lose the drive that got them there because it was never about football. Also, the biggest problem with USC players transitioning to the NFL (in my opinion) is they have had to many players leave early before they were ready and although they had the talent it stunted their growth (but the reason they left early goes back to being more interested in money and fame than football).

im fine with calling justice a bust. "analysts" had him in the top 10, possibly no. 9 to the cards. he fell to the 2nd. osi tore him a new one, and he didnt play very well against the bills at the end of the season. the dudes confidence is probably shot.

but florio, you still need to change what you said about patterson. hes not just a guy whos not a full-blown bust. as someone else said, hes closer to a pro bowler than that. hes better at what he does than justin fargas, who you listed as solid.

i still get the point of the article though. after playing against pac 10 teams(particularly their defenses), USC players struggle in the NFL. but i dont think its as much of a problem on defense, which is why i think keith rivers and sedrick ellis will both be players.

I disagree with Florio's assessment here. Even given the designation of "bust," there is still a huuuuuge percentage of players that are successful from that program.

You guys are missing the point. I think there's been a trend to recognize someone from USC as being better than he actually is. There's a few exceptions to this, but I think a player may get overrated based on coming from Pete Carroll's team.

And I think he raises the valid point of wanting all that comes from being famous without having the desire to put in the work required to STAY famous. Leinart's comments regarding this past season's QB situation with Kurt Warner made it seem like he didn't care he wasn't always going to be leading the offense. LenWhale's weight problem shows he's probably only going to do just enough to be serviceable in this league.

Again, not everyone's going to have these work ethic problems, and there is still a high chance that top rated players from USC (like Sedrick Ellis, and probably Keith Rivers) are going to be productive in the NFL -- just like top rated players from any other major program have a high chance of being productive in the NFL.

But some of those top talents that slipped in the draft, or some of those mid-round talents, they may be overhyped because of their coming from USC.

We'll see if Sam Baker has a game just like Winston Justice had. He was projected as a first round talent, mentioned in the same breath as Jake Long at the beginning of this past football season. And now, he'll be a mid to late 2nd round pick.

OK, I get it. Mike Patterson is a solid NFL player and shouldn't be listed in the bust category. Eagles fans pull the panties out of your crack and read this post as for what it is.

For a college powerhouse and NFL feeder program, USC players wash out of the league at a lot higher rate than other major programs. A one theory that I can buy is many of these five star HS athletes who get offers to every major college program choose USC because they like the laid back party atmosphere of Los Angeles.

As a result some, but not all, are motivated not by the desire to succeed in football, but to live the life. That may work out when you play college football, where your natural talent can carry you, but it's a sure way to fail or underperform in the NFL.

That's not to say NFL teams should stay away from guys from USC. They just better do their job in determining if the guy really wants to play professional football, or if he just wants to be the NFL player with a big wad a of cash in his pocket that everyone sees partying at the local clubs.

I think this article is on the right track but missed the point entirely. I don't think that the USC players are a bust because they don't give football priority, i just think they were never that good to begin with. Basically, in my opinion, they were good in college because the team was good and the system was good. The system made them appear as superstars when they were just ordinary-to-decent players.

@ all the winston justice bashers: he struggled against a NYG defensive line that turned New England's offensive line into swiss cheese -- and that line boasts Matt Light, Logan Mankins etc., who are all-pro caliber players. So, the fact that winston justice got torn up by Osi proves very little in regards to whether he's a bust.

Carson Palmer is not a consistent high-end talent? In four years of NFL action, he's thrown for almost 15,000 yards, with 104 TDs to 63 INTs, completing (for his career) 64.1 percent of his passes. That's not high-end? Come on.

Troy Polamalu isn't high-end? The guy is all over the place in the Steelers backfield.

You really can't blame Shaun Cody, he plays for the Lions. And don't forget about Matt Cassel, he is performing at the exact same level he did in college. Those Gatorade cups are fool and starting QB showered with complements.

Average run of the mill DT that led all DT's in tackles last year? How is that average? And how does that make him a bust?

Justice maybe but he's only had one start hard to judge after that. Now I don't trust him in the least at LT. He may be able to take over at RT although that's no guarantee.

Also proclaiming players busts after their rookies seasons borders on sheer stupidity. Jarrett doesn't look like the smartest player right now but a bust after 1 year is WAY too soon. You're also ignoring other players that have been drafted and produced.

This is probably the most inaccurate post I've ever seen you write Mike. Troy Polamalu has won a Super Bowl. Carson Palmer has been very productive and has only been inconsistent since his knee injury in the playoffs, and most of that was due to poor offensive line play. It's also just way too early to call these players busts. USC was rated the top NFL Football Factory by NFL Network, and sure they may be hungry for fame, but ultimately in order to get there you have to play top notch football at the pro level.

Haha, Florio can be such a trollop at times! Here's the deal: USC produces lots and lots of pro football players. Its common sense that a high percentage of them will be washouts because of the nature of the NFL. Its not USC's fault they send so many guys to the league!

Regardless, I'd make it a point to draft USC DT Sedrick Ellis. I saw his Combine workout and would frankly rather be hit by my 3-Series BMW than tackled by that hoss. The shortest distance between two points is still a straight line, last I checked. And having a guy like Ellis blow-up the middle and draw double-teams inside on every play is what you want.

All that said, I hope Lienart and Bush flop like fat kids a public swimming pools. I hate Bush because he's a dirty cheater and Lienart because he's better looking than me and gets way more chicks (yeah, I said it). Also, if the Texans snag Kieth Rivers at the 18 spot (unlikely, but possible) I'd be pretty stoked.

Open your eyes people. Patterson is nothing more than an average, run of the mill DT. He's nothing special. Serviceable at best. Eagles fans need to stop being such "rah-rahs" and see what Florio is saying without somehow feeling like someone kicked their dog. Get over yourselves....

Dwayne Jarret has been in the league 1 year the average for WR's to break in the league is 3 years.

Also what about Steve Smith wide reciever for the Giants who played a big part in their superbowl win.

You didn't mention Ryan Kalil who is slated to be the starting center for the Carolina Panthers or Duece Lutui who is the starting guard for the Arizona Cardinals.

So if your gonna mention busts make sure you do your research and talk about all the USC players from Pete's era.

P.S. If Executives think USC players don't have the heart to play in the NFL why are Sedrick Ellis and Keith Rivers being slated as top 15 picks?

Was going to comment on your harsh call of patterson being a bust- but after reading the 37 comments about how you were wrong - no need.

Winston Justice - quite possibly, but Patterson - no way -

Oh c'mon Mike...

He was CHARGED with a violation. He wasn't convicted. You know as well as I do, getting "charged" with something doesn't mean you're guilty.

Also, assuming arguendo he was guilty, that's like saying Jared Allen was a bust. Sure, Allen has character issues, but he's an outstanding player. Patterson has been a great player, but he was charged (not convicted) of something stupid.

I understand calling Wintston Justice a bust. He was a 2nd round pick (projected to go in the 1st) who turned into a revolving door when up against Osi. Philadelphia expected WAY more out of Winston Justice. Sure, LT is NOT is position, but that was PATHETIC. Calling him a bust is premature... but definitely not unfair.

But Patterson? Dude lead the league in tackles for DTs. He ad over a hundred tackles for an interior lineman last year! He's closer to a Pro Bowler then a bust.

If Philadelphia likes a guy, he's pretty good.

Clearly Patterson is not a bust He has started all 3 years in the league and has 163
tackles, 9 sacks, the longest fumble return for a touchdown in NFL history.

Winston Justice had 1 bad start where even the coaching staff said he was thrown into
the fire when he was matched up against one of the premire DE in the league. Not to
mention he was playing Left Tackle but he was a Right Tackle in college.

Yes, Mike Williams was a bust, Lendale White is definately questionable, but the other
guys have not had enough time to develope yet.

Last time I checked Mike Patterson Lead all DT in tackles last season. He averages 54 tackles a season...how is that a bust? just because he averages 3 sacks a season makes him a bust?? you my friend are nuts.
I agree that judging Winston Justice this early is very premature, but would also agree that based on his performance against NYG it'd be pretty accurate based on his body of work. However, saying Mike Patterson is a bust is completely ridiculous and unfounded...he's a starter and plays at a pretty high level. You're lumping him in with guys who don't play for their teams, or play and absolutely suck...what's up with the hate for Patterson?

I think to include Patterson to that list is way off the mark. Patterson played very well last year and has improved every season. As far as Justice is concerned, the jury is still out but he didn't look very good in the time he has played.
I agree with the Bush comment, considering he was all the hype of that draft, he's been mediocre at best.

Harsh to put the "bust" label on a player like Bing. He was only a fourth round pick, and he's missed entire seasons with a neck injury.

Patterson had a solid season last year. Didn't he have the most tackles of any DT last year?

And Florio, look at the Eagles run defense pre-Patterson / Bunkley and post Patterson and Bunkley.

The Eagles went from a team that couldn't stop Reggie Bush to a team that shut down Adrian Peterson. Pat and Bunk are MAJOR contributors to that.

I love this website but calling MIKE PATTERSON a bust is honestly the most ridiculous thing Ive EVER heard on this site. Thats just blatant disrepect to Philly fans, who are alot of your fanbase.

your being really harsh to call some of these players busts...some are in their 2nd years some just going into their 3rd and some are just down right productive. stupid lists of busts, and relative to other schools ( and i dont like usc) they do pretty well.

Florio,

I love you to death man... but Mike Patterson a bust?!?!? He's a starting DT in a 4-3. Patterson and Bunkley are slowly becoming two of the best DTs in the NFC. A bust?!? C'mon now. Philadelphia is VERY happy with Mike Patterson.

Again trashing the Eagles unnecessarily.

Calling Patterson & Justice busts is premature as hell.

Lenwhale is doing pretty well in the league, I certainly wouldn't label him a bust like Darnell Bing or the rest.
