Here’s a look at the perceived draft needs of the Pittsburgh Steelers, with heavy input from Matt Miller and David Gardner of NewEraScouting.com.
Offensive guard: Losing Alan Faneca hurts, even though everyone knew it was coming. The team needs a replacement. Branden Albert would be their preference, but he doesn’t expect to stay on the board until pick No. 23. Pittsburgh could look at Roy Schuening, a big mauler from Oregon State, in round two. The team is also rumored to like Chilo Rachal of USC.
Offensive tackle: Max Starks finally signed his transition tag, but how long will he be in Pittsburgh? Starks is under contract for only one year, but also lost his starting job last season to Willie Colon. Pittsburgh could look to add a dominant right tackle, such as Gosder Cherilus of Boston College, in the first round. The team has also take long looks at local prospect Jeff Otah, of Pitt.
Inside linebacker: James Farrior is finally slowing down after a very good career. Besides, in the Steelers’ 3-4 scheme, the team can never have enough linebackers. Larry Foote has been a good starter, but he is nothing amazing, especially against the run. The Steelers can load up this year with linebackers on the inside and out, but the focus should be on replacing Farrior. Pittsburgh has been linked to Dan Connor of Penn State. The team has also looked at Curtis Lofton of Oklahoma, who could be had in round two. Philip Wheeler is another player whom the team likes. The Georgia Tech star is a third round prospect.
Outside linebacker: The 2007 draft saw Pittsburgh spend their first two picks on pass rushers Lawrence Timmons and Lamarr Woodley. Timmons was unspectacular, making only two tackles on the season. Loodley played well, logging four sacks in spot duty, and could take over for Clark Haggans, who signed with the Cardinals. Pittsburgh would like to add a true pass rusher via the draft. The team has looked at Quentin Groves of Auburn and Curtis Gatewood of Vanderbilt. Thomas Howard of Georgia is another player to watch.
Wide receiver: Ben Roethlisberger wants a big receiver. The team also lacks talent behind starters Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes. Pittsburgh brought in Mario Urrutia for a visit, the 6′6″ threat from Louisville. He’s a mid-round prospect.

big ben sucks. he’s got alot of heart and determination but his pure quarter back skill is very limited. with the exception of troy pona… however you spell his name the teams defensive players worthmetioning are old and falling off. hines ward old and overrated. they need help everywhere. the steelers needs to bring in young talent. they may make the playoffs this year due to the afc norths lack of talent but this year will be the last. and please get new uniforms. the steelers should be happy tj wiped his shoes with the terrible towel bcuz i would’ve wiped my a$$ with it.

b5whodeynation, and your bengals suck HOW BAD???
that’s who i want my steeler football knowledge from, some jerkwad with a user name “whodey”. nice ripoff from the saints by the way.
and if that’s a question (whodey?), i think you know the answer;
WE DEY!!!!! as far as OUR uniforms? as you’ve no doubt heard 1000 times, the bengals uni’s fit them fine, like a pumpkin, or more exact, prison outfits. good luck with that whole chad johnson thing. it will be ashame not to get a chance to shut him down for the 37th time in a row.

Not only may that(b5whodey) be the dumbest thing I have ever read on this site (including comments from Emmitt Wordsmith), but does Cincy even still have a team? No one knows what will become of the Ravens, but it looks like Steelers and Browns will be dominating the AFC North for a while.
On the topic at hand, wide reciever should wait. Great teams are built from the lines out. The Browns are starting to get it, the Ravens seem to understand, Cincy has no clue. The Steelers need to stay ahead of the Brownies in true power. The only reason not to draft for one of the lines is if a first round true power back falls to us.

Yeah I guess having a 32/11 season without a true deep threat means that Ben sucks. I mean, look at what Carson Palmer was able to do with TJ and Nocho Stinko. The truth has been spoken by b5.
Just another spirit that has been crushed by the fact that the Steelers end their season every year with a resounding
“WE DEY!”
It makes me warm and fuzzy inside to think of how many poor souls in that sad excuse for a football city we have been able to torture.
Kiss the rings! All 5 of them!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!

as to the steelers draft needs, i know everyone is predicting them to take a guard or a “tall” wide receiver to satisfy big ben. but i kinda think after what we saw with aaron smith going out last year and the run defense imploding afterwards, the steelers have to seriuosly look at a pass rushing end. after smith and keisel “the diesel”, there’s not much there.

I still see them getting Jonathon Stewart from Oregon . Unless Albert is there which he wont be . And if Stewart is gone then It will be Cheralis from BC .

Timmons is moving inside. That said, they could still look ILB and OLB, as they could use a guy to groom behind Farrior and Harrison, with Timmons being groomed behind Foote and Woodley in line at the other spot.
They do like Russell, but if a big RB is available late that they like or if a great value falls earlier, I could see them pull the trigger.
One need that was left out was DL. Irrespective of whether or not you think Tomlin will move them towards the 4-3 at some point, they do need some DL depth. A guy like Balmer could get a look, although I’m more inclined to think they wait and perhaps look at a guy like Marchondray Moore.
If value is there, CB depth may be pondered.

Like I said with the exception of Carson palmers roommate what young beast does the shitsburg kneelers have worth mentioning? And even witout 85 the bengals receiving corps are still better than those clowns. The only reason Cincinnati hasn’t won the AFC north since the Marvin Lewis era is not because of shitsburg, the ravens or the dodo browns. Its because of our injuries and our owner sucks. Yet the bengals still gives the division problems.there’s no comparison. Don’t even try to compare big Ben to Palmer please

Dont try to compare Ben to Carson ? Dont worry we wont . Everyone knows Big Ben is better . And he makes it to the probowl with what you called old sorry recievers just makes the point even more . He made it with less talent . Thanks lol . Look when you win 5 rings . 15 division titles . Put over 25 plus in the HOF and still growing then you can talk trash . Hell best i seen yall do was win the division in 05 . And then get knocked out at home lol by who ? You know . And remember since 05 we have knocked you out of the playoffs 2 out of the 3 years .

The Bengals are pathetic. When you win more than 8 games come back and talk.
I don’t really agree with Florio’s list of needs. I think the needs are OT, DE, WR, RB and maybe a QB late in the draft. I think Colon will move inside and we will draft a tackle who just needs a year of coaching to get on the line.
The Steelers are in the fortunate position of not really needing anybody right now (except for a 3rd or 4th wide-out). Next season they are going to need to replace some people and maintain depth. We can use this draft to plan ahead. But there is no need to stretch to take a certain position because all of our needs are manageable.

the steeler’s wide-outs are clowns? you have a jerk (well, HAD a jerk) that make a total baffoon of himself every year and you say our guys are clowns? you must have forgotten santonio holmes hauling in that pass and running 70 yards thru that “butter” you call a defense in overtime a couple years ago. course if i were a bengal fan, i try to forget most of what i see from that pathetic team too.
i still say someone like ben groves from auburn would be a good fit. he’s a linebacker you could possibly move to defensive end and get after the qb. i’m just not that sold on cheralis, seems to be a bit of a reach.

The guy steelersfanstuckinohio said it best. Great teams start with the ol and dl.the steelers o-line and supporting cast is solid so it makes big Ben look better. The steelers need to draft utility players. To the a hole who said big Ben goes to the pro bowl with less talent let’s see how if he would make the pro bowl with his o-line injured like Carson consistently does.

whodey, why are you even on here? florio posted your teams draft needs about a week or so ago. surely with your keen football knowledge you could comment on that post about all the holes your sorry, no-count team needs to fill. leave the steelers alone, we promise not to rush for more than 450 yards and outscore you by more than 50 points this year. please stop crying. some things will always be: the sky is blue, water is wet, and the steelers own the bengals asses!

Whodey, saying that the Steeler’s o-line is solid doesn’t make sense. Ben went down 47 times. He’s just one tough mo-fo. If he could stay on his feet, he might have had 40 TDs. With an upgraded o-line next season you’ll see that Roethlisberger really is an elite QB.

I would like to see the Steelers trade down alittle, unless Stewert or Albert fall whice they won’t, and stock up on as many o-linemen as we can.Losing Faneca will hurt more than most of us know. Go STEELERS!! oh by the way the bunguls will be lucky to win 5 games.
