Clemson defensive end Philip Merling, who hasn’t previously worked out for NFL teams because of March 5 surgery to repair a sports hernia, went through a workout on Clemson’s practice field today.

The Redskins appear to be interested; coach Jim Zorn, owner Dan Snyder and vice president for football operations Vinny Cerrato all attended.

Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell was also there because he’ll be throwing the passes when the team’s decision-makers observe Oklahoma receiver Malcolm Kelly later today. Campbell said the team deciding to closely monitor a workout with a player prior to the draft “is usually a pretty positive sign” that the team is strongly considering drafting the player.

Other teams reported to have sent representatives to observe Merling’s workout include the Ravens, Dolphins, Jets, Bills, Colts, Giants, Saints, Packers, Panthers and Buccaneers.
