Though we’ve long believed that Bengals receiver Chad Johnson will huff and puff about holding out but ultimately show up for training camp, there apparently is a good chance that he will dig in his heels.
Per a league source, Johnson is serious about staying away, despite the cost.
It won’t be cheap, if that’s what Johnson chooses to do. The daily fines for holdouts exceed $14,000 per day. Also, he would be required to pay back 25 percent of his signing bonus proration for 2008, if he misses even as little as one mandatory day.
But holding out and paying the money might actually be a better outcome for Johnson than showing up. Because we can’t imagine Johnson not acting out and ultimately getting suspended four games for conduct detrimental to the team, which would end up costing him a lot more.
If the Bengals persist in their refusal to trade Johnson, his only other option is to retire. Though doing so would avoid the fines, he also would have to pay back the full amount of all remaining signing bonus proration.
Then again, he can continue to huff and puff about holding out, and he might truly intend to do it right now, but when he’s staring down that daily price tag of 14 grand, he might feel very differently about it all.

Marvin Lewis called his bluff in public. Johnson has to sit out now or he will look like a b*tch.

I think there is some sense to the idea that TJ has bypassed him. I also remember that monday night game where Palmer was caught on live audio saying “admit chad you effed up”.
otoh, marvin is the flipside of billick. marvin is the defensive genius but except for an occasional gem (usually vs. balto)… cincy doesnt play that much d.
it would be interesting if chad showed up to play week 10… and THEN the bengals med staff refused to clear him to play.
if not traded, he has to show up and play sometime or retire. games not played eventuall get added to the year after his last contract year, thus essentially keeping him as a cincy player.
but… now that i see what they offered, i would hold out for a little more from snyder. like a current good player ilo a conditional 09 lower round pick. snyder is a sucker.

Dude, the Snyderskins are the undefeated champs of overpaying players. Do you really need a reminder?
Deion Sanders - 7 years, $56 million.
Bruce Smith - 5 years, $23 million
Adam Archuleta - 7 years, $35 million
Randle El - 7 years, $31 million
Brandon Lloyd - 6 years, $30 million
You guys are going to be paying through the nose in dead cap space for Lloyd’s contract through the ‘09 season and he never even scored a TD for you guys. Need I go on?

“Free Ocho Stinko. The Bungles can posture and fine him all they want, but they are going to lose with or with out him, so why not get something instead of nothing and bad PR, and will from the guys around the NFL who all like and support Ocho.”
Jeremiah, climb out from under your rock more often, it is 2008!
If the Bengals are going to lose, whether they trade CJ or keep him, I seriously doubt they will incur an $8 million cap hit, lose one of their better players, and open the door for the next head-case whose average catches per season is well above his IQ, just so a garbage picking Ratbird fan and a few talking heads on TV will like them! Chad’s only support is coming from other NFL players who would like to be able to change teams whenever they want to, and morons fans of other teams (like your Ravens, for instance) that have something to gain. NFL Network and ESPN are more than happy to cover Chad’s sideshow on their networks, because people will tune in to watch to see if he can top the level of stupidity he reached with the previous day’s comments. But they are laughing at Chad Johnson, not with him, and Chad Johnson is just too stupid to realize it!
Jeremiah, I’m starting to understand why you identify so well with Chad…

The Bengals will be holding out for the Redskins to offer Santana Moss, the 17th overall pick in 2008 and some pick in 2009.
Redskins get Chad.
Bengals take the $8M Cap hit for trading Chad, Redskins take the $7M hit for trading Moss.
Chad gets a new contract; Moss only gets a new contract after 1-2 years if he improves his production.
Bengals select Sedrick Ellis with their first-first round pick (even if it costs them their 3rd round pick to move up). They can then select the best WR on the board with their other first round pick.
Bengals get better… Snyder gets what he wants.

islebfrank, I find Ocho’s side show amusing mainly because I am a Raven fan and am sick of him beating C-Mack more than I am him running his mouth. The Ravens know how to talk and how to deal with WRs who try to talk back. He may just be tired of Ed Reed Jacking him up twice a year, or the annual Bungle swoon. Don’t make him come back in and start slapping the whole front office around.
Why do you want to keep him if he does not want to be there? Are BUngle fans really that spiteful they would rather force him to retire than get some draft picks?
NE only gave up a 4th rounder for Moss. Be happy someone is dumb enough to give you a first rounder and get it over with already, sorry Bungles.
