The Denver Broncos are back in the business of picking up one-time single-digit draft picks who play on the defensive line.
According to Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Broncos have acquired defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, the fourth overall pick in the 2003 draft, from the New York Jets. In return, the Jets will receive a late-round conditional draft pick in 2009.
The Jets really had no choice but to take what they could get. With a $3 million roster bonus due in June, the Jets were going to cut Robertson if they weren’t able to trade him.
The next question is whether the Broncos have already restructured Robertson’s contract. It could be that they’ve yet to do so, and that one of the conditions is that the Broncos must sign him to a new deal or the Jets get nothing.

Maybe this breaks the curse. Was that their thinking perhaps? Seems like a good idea to me.

Well, you have to figure at some point that by picking up all these one-time single-digit draft picks, that eventually one of them will pan out, right? They might as well bring Johnathan Sullivan in for a look, too!

Not sure why Denver doesn’t just line-up a Robertson “Fathead” sticker over center. Same result as a real life Robertson, but for only $9.95 ($18 Euro).

Interesting that Robertson is the product of Belichick getting the Jets to look over their shoulder with the Pats picking immediate after them - spooking the Jets to unnecessarilly move up to grab a guy they thought the Patriots wanted.
Belichick turned his two 1st round picks into Ty Warren and Vince Wilfork.
The Jets turned their two 1st round picks into a 2009 late conditional pick.
This year the Jets and Patriots are in a similar situation, picking immediately behind the Jets, with the Jets looking over their shoulders once again.
Seems like a no win situation for MangIdiot.

Robertson reminds me of Schlereth, they said he was too injured to play but he suited up every week.
Good move by the Bronco’s.
They desperately needed help.

I so called this garbage move a month ago. No seriously, look it up in the archives. Guess even after the warning shot of having to fire his GM, Coach Kevlar just couldn’t resist being himself.

Well, the Jets got more than a bag of footballs for Robertson. I guess that is a victory.

This is a good deal for Denver, They already have a contract in place with Robertson that will pay him little this season and most next season. The Broncos have to give up a pick for 2009 draft based on Robertson’s playing time and stats for next season. Also with how the deal is set up if the Broncos cut him before the start of the season then they don’t have to give up a draft pick at all next year, and the money they lose in cutting him is small.
Also he has played good the last few years even with his knee’s in the shape they are, and he is not a trouble maker in public or in the locker room.
How is this not a good deal for Denver.

The Broncos just picked up a player that will thrive in their system. Much like Jonathan Vilma, Robertson was miscast in the 3-4 scheme.
In my opinion, neither can righfully be labeled as a bust and in their new systems I believe they will excel.

40 tackles and a sack isn’t good, for a player taken that high…..you will see. The Jets did well to dump the salary and get anything. I saw alot of him……good move Jets on this one. The Jets could have got a pick in the second round of the NBA draft and made out like bandits to dump that 10 million bucks.

Well, it doesn’t sound like a big risk. Less than they gave for Warren (a 4th rounder, I believe). As noted, they deperately need DT help.

He may have been a high 1st rounder to the Jets, but to the Broncos he’s now a late rounder. Different expectations and now probably different production. I think it works well for both teams. The Jets dump an overpaid misfit, and the Broncos fill a position of need/desperation allowing them to focus more on other needs in the draft. Win-Win.
