Urnotme,

Vike's track record is actually good in recent FA acquisitions:

Darren Sharper - Ooops!
Pat Williams - Ooops!
Ben Leber - Ooops!
Steve Hutchinson - Ooops!
Chester Taylor - Ooops!
A. Winfeid - Ooops!

The draft picks have been solid over the past three years as well.

Others:
Bobby Wade was a good pick-up.
Ferguson was a desperation pick...thumbs down right now.
The jury's still out on Visante
Berrian hasn't played a snap yet with the team.

Why did the Vikes not wait until after the draft, then sign Allen and put in the poison pill? He was not going any where. This may work out but one player does not make a team and they certainly are more than one player away from a Super Bowl team.

In spite of all the "blunders" the team is finally out of rebuilding mode will definitely be fun to watch. I think they sent a pretty good number of players to the pro bowl as well this year, they just need consistent play from Jackson. Laugh now while you can.

urnotme, now you're just making a fool of yourself. First you try to correct me on the Kampman point... I never said it was the same as the Allen trade (it wasn't a trade at all), I was pointing out that he wasn't resigned before his contract ran out, as you originally said. Restricted or not, he was a free agent, so your point was, as they might say in these parts, wr..wr..wr..completely f--king stupid.

And I'm alright with Bobby Wade's contract, thank you. And I'm alright with Bernard Berrian, as well ("one-trick pony with stone hands"? Watch a damn game before you make a judgment - and not just a GB-CHI game when you're drunk). And Dwight Smith had a pretty damn productive couple of years, considering the price. And Smoot...... So wait, your team on the drunker side of the border has never hired someone that didn't work out, right? Please.

And if you're going to bring up out crappy tight end, would you at least spell his name right, for chrissake?

For anyone to think that this team won't be better than last year's 8-8 team needs to lay off the booze like Allen.
OL returns all 5 starters albeit the right side isn't so great.
QB while crappy, still a year older and more exp.
RB I hear they have a couple guys there...cant remember their names
WR better than last year + Sidney Rice a year older
TE good enough for government work
DL 3 Pro Bowlers + 2 young guys who had 9 sacks last season and James
LB EJ almost made pro bowl,Greenway 100 tack first year, Leber solid
CB Winfield is a stud, Griffin McCaulley are okay and getting better
S Sharper is still the man, Williams solid player

Jaybles,
I guess you should take your own advice and disappear so in your words the big boys can talk about football. Kampman was a restricted free agent, meaning that he had already signed the tender after his 3rd year, thus he was under contract as long as they matched any offers, which they did. That's a big difference than a free agent or giving up the farm for a player who has a lot of questions about him and making him the highest paid player at his position on top of it!

They do it every year with crap results. Visante Shianco for $3.5 million a year? Is he even still with the team? Dwight Smith? Ooooops...... Fred Smoot? Ooops again.... Wait wait you say? What about Bobby Wade? Ooops....... I know, I know......what about Bernard Berrian?!?!? Sorry......Oooooops again! Last I checked the Vikings are one player away from having the entire Bears WR core. I don't recall ever being concerned about anyone the Bears had playing WR. Just another Ooooops in the making. But at the 4th highest paid, he should at least be in the top 10 in receiving right? Not likely for that one trick pony with stone hands.

"Draft Blunders"????

Were those picks not McKinnie and Kevin Williams???

Seems like great picks to me.

Florio need to apply that same "insight" to other teams, like the Cowboys and Packers.

Bye the way, did Reggie White sign with the Packers and cost a SL of M?

Within a few years that had a super bowl with a young up-rising QB.

Isn't this great, apparently everyone that writes a comment on this site thinks they should either be a President of Player Personnel, or AA Counselor. Maybe one person that has commented on here has ever even talked to Jared Allen, but yet everyone (mostly non-Vikings fans, because their team didn't make the move) "knows" he is going to have a relapse and start drinking and driving again. He's not the first player to have a problem off the field, and he won't be the last. Yes, most player's that have off the field problems say it won't happen again, and it does. But if he says it won't happen again and it doesn't it also won't be the first time that a player has grown up and figured things out.

The Vikings structured the contract to protect themselves in case anything happens again. Taking everything into consideration this is really a pretty safe deal.

Urnotme - Besides the fact that you had like 4 completely fabricated (and false) premises in your second paragraph, I have to say that I laughed when you cited Kampman as an example of a player the Packers "signed to a longterm deal before his deal expired and they had to overpay him and blah blah blah"... Do you not remember how his deal was signed? Not only did his deal run out, but the Packers didn't even negotiate the deal - the Vikings did. Look it up.

dyhardskinsfan - Stick to talking about teams you've watched, pal. Or maybe sports you've watched (cause I'm not so positive you've watched a whole lot of NFL games in the last couple years). If you're going to tell me that the Chiefs are better than the Vikings, then I'm going to need you to tell me even three positions at which the Chiefs are better than the Vikes (I mean, to be better than the Vikes, they'd presumably have to be better at 12 positions, but I'm only asking for three). You know what? I'll give you two: TE and WLB. So go ahead and give me one position (and if you say RB I will only laugh, so please... for your own sake... don't say RB).

Oh, and I'm sorry but just one more thing - are you trying to say that proof of Allen not being good is the fact that he's on a team picking in the top 10? So... I guess you expect one player to fix a diseased team, or else he sucks? You do know that by your logic J. Taylor and S. Jackson and T. Holt and N. Asomugha and P. Willis and E. Reed and T. Suggs and R. Lewis and C. Palmer and C. Johnson and D. Brees all suck, right?

Stick to figureskating, and let the big boys talk about football.

Fortunately you don't have to go big or go home when you have a deep roster full of talent as evidenced by a 13-3 record.

Go big or go home!? With T-Joke as the QB and a bunch of #2 WR's as your starters, Wilf would have been better off not dialing for dollars to sign Allen and spent the money on a new office building. Less we forget, Chilly Willy is still the head coach and your overrated/overpaid (seems to be a common theme) left tackle will probably be in jail soon.

vikes are a sorry franchise.

What make you vikes fans believe that this guy, who was on a better team, with a better defense and offense, will resurrect you horrible franchise when that very team who is trading him, is picking top ten in this years draft.

You know why? Because both of yous guys have horrible QBs. Tarvaris Jackson couldn't make my sons pee wee team.( you know I'm kidding of course he'd be able to... As the water boy)

Hey jrhsd,
Yes it's not a coincidence that "all 3 of those aforementioned teams are committed to winning while the cash-strapped McCaskey family and Green Bay don’t spend a dime every year with their cushy deals." The difference is that Green Bay drafts and develops talent, then signs them to long term deals before they expire, so they don't have to overpay with "cushy" deals to add talent to the roster. Take All Pro Aaron Kampman as one of many examples, who is every bit as good as Allen. In fact, he's been to more pro bowls than Allen.

What makes the Vikings blunders laughable is that they always overpay in free agency to cover up their terrible drafting and personnel moves by giving away players like Moss/Culpepper and getting barely anything in return. The real issue is going to be when other guys on the Vikings team look at Allen, Barnyard Berrian and Visante Shianco's crazy salaries and say "if they are making x, then I should make y." Berrian is the 4th highest paid WR in the league. He's not even in the top 30 WR's and is a #2 at best. Now you give up the farm for a guy who has been arrested 3 times for DUI's (convicted twice) and make him the highest paid defensive lineman in the game. Do you think that perhaps Allen's previous season was fueled by motivation for a new contract AND having something to prove after being suspended and with his career hanging by a thread? It happens all the time in the NFL. What do you think Kevin Williams is going to demand. You think players on each team don't compare their salary's to other players in the locker room and look for "respect" when they are up for their next contract?

Quoting from the Milwaukee Journal? May as well quote the Packers PR publicists.

I've said this before, at worst it's like having a bad draft one year (they did not dip into the 2009 draft to get Allen). And at best, they added the kind of immediate impact you cannot expect in the middle of the 1st round (again how do you top getting Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen with back-to-back 1st round picks?).

Had the Vikings not had back-to-back solid drafts the prior two years as far as number of quality starters, key reserves and one superstar, they would need quantity in this draft; instead they need quality, which they get with Jared Allen.

It's a question of four non-elite starters/key reserves vs. one elite star and one non-elite starter/key reserve.

I think the Vikings solidified themselves as the team to beat this year in the North with the signing. Note to Vikings fans: You guys have the best coach in the North....and last years ROY in Peterson. Be happy, you're finally heading in the right direction!

Whatever one's opinion is regarding the Allen signing; one thing I think we all can agree on, is that this move could make or break the franchise. There is one hell of a lot of pressure on Allen; Zygi Wilf and the coaching staff to make this work.

I know this is getting nit picky, but why don't the Cowboys get any crap for the 2003 draft pick blunder? In 2002, the Vikings let the time run out while trying to trade down. That was dumb. In 2003 the Cowboys did the same thing, but all the blame goes to the Vikings for not rushing up & making their pick. No one mentions that the Cowboys pulled a "Viking" and could've lost the guy they wanted. The Vikes still got their man.

I guess people choose to remember things as they will, not based on fact. Florio is usually pretty good about this type of thing though.

Maybe I could take the Vikes a bit more seriously if they had a good line, or a quarterback. Defense alone will not do it. Minnesota way over-spent to get Allen.

I love that the Viking apologist camp has on multiple occasions cited the "we would have wasted the draft picks anyway" excuse as a reason why the Allen trade was a good idea.

Is it really that far fetched to call this franchise a joke when even its own fans don't believe in the competency of the front office?

from Milwaukee Journal after Packers-Chiefs game:

"In order to function, the offense needed Chad Clifton to handle Jared Allen, a superb, relentless DE. Other than three or four turns inside, Allen spent the entire game over Clifton and had to settle for one pressure. Clifton, who had help in the form of RB chips on only a few third downs, didn't have any bad misses in the run game, either."

Florio, you have been drinking the Kool-Aid, and not the purple flavor. Cursed? Every team has a past. Some pasts are more colorful than others; some pasts are covered-up more completely. Stick to facts, contract details, and gossip; let Harry Potter deal with the dark arts.

A few days ago Jack Del Rio was interviewed by the NFL Network in regards to the draft and free agency. One of the things he was very adamant about was about how stupid he thinks it is to "put all your eggs in one basket", and how the most important thing is to acquire talent and depth. I agree with Del Rio on this subject matter, most of the teams that win super bowls, do so because of depth and the best way to acquire depth is to sign young players that are looking for a starting role and push themselves to the limit whenever on the field. As a non-Vikings fan, I'm glad they made this move, this may or may not pay immediate dividends, however I am certain it will come back to bite them in the near future.

Unless Childress and Wilf's equation included paying off the legal system, what the NFL does with Allen's DUIs doesn't matter too much. He gets popped again and he'll be sharing a cell with Michael Vick for a while.

If your going to kick us Viking Fans while we're down, don't forget about the Darrin Nelson dropped TD pass against the Redskins ('87 Championship Game), 41-Doughnut ('00 Championship Game), Drew Pearson's push off on the Hail Mary. It's good that these things are around to crush my spirits after the Vikes do something positive. Excuse me while I know go shotgun a few Schmidt's.

As a technicality: by September the two DUIs are off the slate from the NFL's perspective. I'm sure this had something to do with Childress and Wilf's equation.

So, which is worse: giving up Randy Moss for nothing, or picking up a drunken DE for everything? The Vikings are one injury away from being in LA.

Get off the fence Florio and tell us what you really think of the Vikes. I guess I don't understand why you hate these guys so much.
They've had a lot less under .500 seasons since '61' than just about any other franchise. I think this was a good, if not great move.
We keep the pick, then what? Another Trojan Horse Williamson? Give me a break. This might be the safest pick in years. (ll Day was a great pick but it wasn't a safe one.)

If the Vikes can get some consistent play from Tarvaris Jackson this year, they could be the team to beat in the NFC North, and could very well make a playoff run.

My bad, I thought the headline said "MILF." Otherwise, I don't give a damn who pays for some guy's multi-million dollar bonus.

For being an ex-Vikings apologist Florio, you are taking too negative a tone on this one. This is the biggest signing in Minnesota since the Walker deal (including all four major sports) and I think it's brilliance. Yeah, Wilf and his cronies had to come up with some cash, but as a developer, that's his game. Ask P.A., he was at the press conference (like I was) today, and he'll tell you from the look in #69's eye: Allen is a changed man... and he's gonna change the face of the NFC North for a while. Favre is wise to stay in retirement. GO VIKES!!!

"For the sake of the team’s long-suffering fans..."

That's "insufferable".

not at all surprised at this.

the vikings have the worst stadium deal in the nfl. they have preserved cap space from year to year, but for many years have been among the biggest spenders in actual cash ever since Wilf came in.

I'm sure they do need the money. If the people of Minnesota can scrape up the money for new stadiums for the hapless Twinkies and Golden Gophers and won't support the state's most popular team, Wilf needs to have a good team to invite interest elsewhere. Especially when he may be competing with the Chargers and Saints.

It isn't a coincidence all 3 of those aforementioned teams are committed to winning while the cash-strapped McCaskey family and Green Bay don't spend a dime every year with their cushy deals.

Can you really discuss recent forgettable Viking lore without so much as a mention of The Original Whizzinator?
