How many times while watching a game have you noticed the QB motioning to the sideline to hurry up and give him a play? How many of those times were teams waiting for the defensive signals to come in to see if they could decypher them and put in an offensive play designed to beat that defense? If it works, the players and particularly the coaches, look like geniuses. If it doesn't work, time expires before they get the play off, or the QB has to call a timeout. Regardless, the players never really have to know. Even if they suspect what's going on, if it's working (or has in the past) what's the incentive to ruin one's career by being a whistle-blower?
