The free-fall of Michigan receiver Mario Manningham, whose slow 40 times and slow-witted handling of tough questions regarding marijuana use have caused him to fall out of the first round, might also fall out of the second round, too.
There’s a school of thought that Manningham won’t hear his name called at all on the first day of the draft, which means he’ll be drafted in round three at the earliest.
With plenty of other guys who haven’t failed drug tests in college and haven’t lied about it under circumstances where a reasonable person should have known that the lie would be exposed, burning a pick on Manningham with other viable candidates on the board represents a major risk.

Of course. He’s a jerk.
Did anyone hear his interview on Sirius NFL Radio?
They asked him about his dropped balls and he kept saying “what about the balls I caught?”
Jeez.

Looks like the Broncos are going to be drafting a WR in the second round…

I think someone’s looking to pick him up in the mid-low 2nd round, and is using sites like this one to float some disinformation trying to lower his expected selection.

He’s got Detroit written all over him…or maybe Millen has Manningham written all over him. Either way, Ford oval blue figures to be in Manningham’s future.

I did hear the Sirius interview with Adam Schein…the guy totally did himself in. I mean he did it himself with no help from anyone else. I was uncomfortable just listening to it.
The real shame is that the guy can actually play football despite clearly being an idiot. He’ll slide on draft day, but at some point some team will pick him and they’ll get an excellent value.

It only takes one team to decide his ability is more important than his character. Teams want Chad Johnson. The Rams drafted Lawrence Phillips. If the ability is there somebody will take the chance with his character.

I’ve thought for a while that Mario wouldn’t be a day one pick. In fact, I think he’ll drop all the way to round 4. There were hints as early as last summer about character issues (remember, he was suspended for a game last season and, if memory serves, held out for part of another), and was nearly invisible in the disastrous Appy State/Oregon games. Add to that the lying about positive drug tests and the poor combine showing, and it’s no surprise that scouts’ opinion of him is plummeting.
He did have some great games for us (I especially enjoyed his role in the ‘06 disassembling of Notre Dame), but if I were an NFL GM I wouldn’t touch him until at least the 4th if not later.

The character issues are far more concerning to me than his 40-times, but even his character issues seem overblown.
People tend to fall in love with receivers with great 40 times and size rather than guys who can actually play. Troy Williamson comes to mind, among others.
I guess the theory is that you can’t teach speed, but you can teach a guy to catch. I would argue that history begs to differ.
Manningham can play. That alone puts him in the mid-to-late 2nd, high 3rd round for me.

Couldn’t agree more. Other than Braylan Edwards (and we’ll see if he can repeat numbers from last years fluke season), I haven’t really known Michigan for producing solid WRs lately. See Jason Avant - Eagles….

Save the jokes, but he visited Oakland a couple weeks ago. I didn’t hear the interview, but it seems it acted a fool. Nevertheless, he’s got skills, could come cheap. If Oakland can get into the 2nd round (2nd & 3rd gone now) with their plethora of running backs and corners, then he may don the silver and black.
