Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the proposal governing hair length was a major topic of conversation when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell met Tuesday with the NFL’s players’ advisory council.

Last month NFL owners tabled a proposal introduced by the Kansas City Chiefs that would prevent players from wearing hair long enough to cover the names on the backs of their jerseys. The owners could take the issue up again at their May meeting.

Goodell stressed in his meeting with the players that no one would be forced to cut his hair, but that if the proposal is adopted, players would be told to tuck their hair into their helmets during games. Players are apparently concerned that their helmets would no longer fit properly if they had to stuff long hair into them, and Goodell said he would seek the opinion of Riddell, the NFL’s helmet provider.

Per Mortensen, it was determined that 62 players in the league had long enough hair that they would be affected by the rule.

The players’ advisory council consists of the Titans’ Kevin Mawae, Kyle Vandenbosch and David Thornton; the Saints’ Drew Brees; the Jets’ Brandon Moore and Tony Richardson; the Lions’ Mike Furrey; the Bears’ Hunter Hillenmeyer; the Giants’ Shaun O’Hara and the Chiefs’ John McGraw.
