The news that the Miami Dolphins are looking to get a mid- or late-first-round draft pick in a trade for defensive end Jason Taylor raises the obvious question: Who would the Dolphins draft with that pick?
According to Omar Kelly of the Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins are targeting four players: Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey, Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves, Michigan quarterback Chad Henne and Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco.
If the Dolphins were to trade Taylor for a first-round pick, they would likely use that pick on either Harvey or Groves, who would be penciled in to take Taylor’s place in the starting lineup.
Then, with their second-round pick, No. 32 overall, the Dolphins would presumably turn their attention to Henne or Flacco.
One way or another, it appears that Dolphins front office boss Bill Parcells didn’t mean it when he said, “The only way Jason Taylor won’t be playing for the Dolphins in 2008 is if he chooses to retire.”

What team in their right mind would give up a first round pick for Jason Taylor. Taylor is an aging veteran. He has contemplated retirement, while still a very good player is definitely past his prime.

Would love to see the Dolphins land Groves. When healthy he’s the best pass rusher in the draft. I like him more than Harvey and I went to UF.

He can definitely still play at a very high level, and he would be a good addition to a contender to complete their puzzle. However, due to age concerns, a believe a second rounder would be more appropriate. Definitely should be moved though

How about the Fins swap their early 2nd rounder for the Jags 1st and pick up their 3rd as well. Seems fair to me.

No general manager in their right mind would send a mid to late first round pick in exchange for Jason Taylor.
Please, Millen–don’t answer the phone.

Jason Taylor is capable of playing at a very high level. He very well could be the missing piece to a contender. However, a first rounder is too much for a player who is near retirement, so a second rounder would be much more appropriate

i have been wondering about the packers trading for him for a couple months now(since first rumored). i would absolutley love taylor on the line bookending aaron kampman, BOOYAH! that would be awesome. but all signs point to TT not giving up a first rounder for an old guy. maybe the earlier of our late 2nd rounders,MAYBE both…but it will probably never become more than a dream. dont you just love the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year? i know i do.

No team is going to give up a 1st round pick for a guy contemplating retirement. Jason Taylor is a great guy, but he’s worth a 4th round pick at the most.

As several comments have noted, anyone trading a 1st round pick for a 33 year old DE with one eye on a second career in Hollywood has got to be a mouth-foaming lunatic.
The “obvious question” should be “Does Parcells really think any NFL GM is that stupid?” Or perhaps more realistically, “What would Parcells really accept for a good player who otherwise will reportedly retire - maybe a 3rd or 4th rounder? Or maybe “Is starting with such a ridiculously high asking price for Taylor indicate that Parcells is a savvy negotiator, or in possession of inside info that Taylor will play for the Fins this year anyway, or showing signs of early dementia?”

Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha!
A first rounder for a 34-yr. old DE with 12th seasons of wear on his knees?
However you calculate the points, Taylor gets them a fourth round pick.
Now, if they think they can use a fourth rounder and package it with other picks to move from the top of the second to the bottom of the first when one of those players falls, okay, that’s reasonable.

Parcell’s has to have his hand chosen QB for his vision to be completed over the next 3-4 years. QB Beck was drafted 1 year ago in the 2nd round by the former administration along with ted ginn in the first.
Needless to say, this team is lacking the foundation that provides for a good franchise. At least right now

A first rounder is way too much to spend on a man very very near the end of his career. . Even if the Jags do need D line help. They have tried this old man approach before and it didn’t work well then.

Considering the trade value of decent veteran D-tackles are 2nd round and 5th round picks; the idea that an excellant pass-rushing D-End that’s had double digit sacks the last 3 yrs & 6 out of the last 8 and was the 06-07 Defensive Player of the Year, might be worth a mid to late 1st round pick seems about right to me. Especially since he hasn’t shown any sort of decline nor has he missed a start the last 8 seasons.
As to the retirement talk, no one really knows how close Taylor is to retiring. That’s the first thing vets say when a new regime cleans house. In fact, I still don’t understand why players don’t have coaching/front office-change related buy-outs in their contracts so they can get outta Dodge when an “unfriendly” staff moves in.

All I’m talking about is the Jags dropping six spots in the 1st and giving an additional 3rd for Taylor. Doesn’t seem like much for a guy that might be able to put them over the top. The Jags played the Pats really tough in last years playoffs. Might have been different if they could have put just a little pressure on Brady. It worked for the Giants.
