To all the naysayers, I say take a look at the last 15 drafts to see who was picked at the slots which the Vikings traded to get Allen. At most, there may be 2 drafts where an insightful fan MIGHT take those picks over Allen. That translates into a 13.3% probability that the Chiefs (or any other team which holds the picks) will use the picks to select player(s) better than or equal to Allen.

In other words, the draft is a crapshoot while Allen is a proven talent.

For my money, I'll take the proven talent any day.

sorry razon that you can't do any better than call somebody names.

Two facts remain.

1. From 2005-2008, the Packers have won one playoff game in Lambeau and so do the Vikings

2. If Mark Tauscher (or really Chad Clifton who plays that position) 'dominated' Jared Allen by holding him two 2 tackles and 1/2 a sack, Ryan Cook 'completely dominated' Aaron Kampman by limiting him to 3 tackles and 1 sack in two meetings last year.

Tell me how either of those comments is idiotic.

This is great! It's awesome to see the Vikings make crazy decisions and overpay for players with draft picks and huge contracts to overcompensate for their terrible drafting and personnel blunders.

I guess this means Chris Berman won't be able to make his annual "Will the Vikings get their pick in on time?" shenanigan on draft day since we won't have a first rounder.

You sure are acting like an idiot, at least do your research first. But based on what you were talking about you shouldn't even need to do research on that.

The Vikings need more than just a QB.

1. As far as the Speilman criticism, the last draft w/o him, the Vikings had two picks in the 1st (including No. 7 overall) and one in the 2nd. They came away with Troy Williamson, Erasmus James, and Marcus Johnson. None of them are starters, yet since Speilman took over they've found seven or eight starters in the draft.

2. Comparing this to the Hershel Walker trade. Boring. Predictable. Off target. If Allen is a disappointment, this is nothing more than a bad draft with a fresh start next year. The Walker trade required giving up a few established veterans and draft picks over several years.

3. Comparing Allen to Koren Robison. No comparison. Robinson IS a true alcoholic who (he showed up drunk for his jail sentence!!). He is always in denial, yet sneaks away to drink while saying he's turned his life around. He was caught going 90 in a residential area so he wouldn't break curfew and be caught.

4. As far as Allen getting another DUI in Minnesota. Possible, if he is also lying about giving up drinking. But I'm guessing Wilf and Childress had him program taxi services on his cell phone speed dial, just in case. Heck, he can call for limos whenever he wants.

5. As far as setting a benchmark at number of sacks to determine his worth. His value will be seen in the overall improvement in the Vikings pass defense. Allen will demand double teams, so I expect to see everyone on the D line -- Allen included -- have a huge year. This should carry over to the D backs who won't have to hold their coverage as long and will have more INT chances with QBs being pressured. LBs will not need to blitz as much as can help put in coverage, not be picked up when they do blitz, and will be free to strip the ball more when they're the second man to the ball carrier.

6. Even though the Vikes only have one pick before round 4, Vikings fans should still pay attention to the draft. I have a feeling they will make a trade to move up somewhere, trade a 2009 pick for an extra pick this year, and/or possibly trade a veteran for a draft pick.

7. As far as the Vikings going all-in with Jackson. This decision was made three years ago when they chose to not to move up for Jay Cutler or Matt Leinhart or try and sign Drew Brees. Choices are pretty limited unless you're rebuilding. Either go with the best QB on your roster and win with veteran talent in other positions or start over while the veterans see their prime year pass by.

8. As far as gambling to win now. No choice with the Metrodome lease expiring and the Governor vowing not to give any money for a new stadium, they have to win now and have the public demand a new stadium. They can't afford for fans to be apathetic and think they are not trying to win.

Knock Jackson all you want.... But you still cannot deny that he has only been surrounded by mediocre tallent at best..Bobby Wade Is an outstanding 3rd receiver..But he was forced into the #1 spot by attrition..And S Rice was rarely used because he needed to learn his routes..then sprained his ankle by the end of the year.. And Troy Williamson needed a therapist..He could catch the ball when covered but give him 3 steps and its a guaranteed drop. Garret Mills swiped from the patriots practice squad is also poised to possibly contribue this year. I think your going to see what Jackson is made of this year.. when I say that Im not talking probowler.. Im just saying that you cant blame the receivers this year.. And your going to get your most honest assesment of his abilities now that he has a stock of average or above average receivers.

PFT wrote: "a market that is still processing the impact of Jared Allen’s jaw-dropping deal in Minnesota."

I don't think the deal is all that market-shattering. Last year, Dwight Freeney signed for $30M guaranteed, $70M total. Just about the same. DF was a year older, coming off a 5.5 sack season, and had an average of 11.3 sacks per year for his career, opposed to JA's average of 10.75.

Freeney's deal set the market value. Allen's is right in line with the market, neither "jaw-dropping" nor something the market has to "process."

From_FL_to_MN,

Steve Young said it best, "If you could garantee me the kind of defenses that Tarvaris Jackson is facing every game, I'd unretire right now and throw for 500 yards every week!"

Sadly, guys like Trent Dilfer, Rex Grossman and Kyle Boller would be drastic improvements at QB over anyone on the Vikings current roster. Not to mention the fact that Jackson has been throwing against super-soft cover-3 defenses. Other teams are just daring him to throw, and his accuracy is so terrible that he can't do it. Even against such soft pass defenses, he still looks lost, confused, and without a clue as to what he's doing. Vikings fans around the nation cringe every time he throws.

I dont think Allens numbers will be the most scrutinized thing... I believe that if the vikings fall anywhere short of a division title thats when the disappointment sets in. The Vikings Have shown that the goal of the team is a national title.. Weve paid through the nose for solid long term contracts. So most of the team will be locked up for the long move to los angeles...............................

"marcduke, the Pack haven’t won a home playoff game since, when?"

Since last January, when they blew out the 'Hawks, maybe? And regardless of that, you have to be in the Playoffs to win Playoff games.

marcduke, the Pack haven't won a home playoff game since, when?

The Vikings have won more playoffs in Lambeau over that period.

Znorseman...yeah, no team has ever won the superbowl with only defense and running game and without a stud QB. That's why Baltimore (2001), Tampa (2003) and Pittsburg (2006)couldn't win those superbowls...wait a minute.

Like madmax says, give the guy a chance. How did Drew Brees look his first two years...how about Eli? Jackson had a pretty good four game stretch last year when his completion precentage was over 70%. Would I like to see more competition at the position...yes...but exactly who could they have got during free agency or the draft this year that would be your QB savoir? Derek Anderson? McNabb? a rookie?

May prove to be a huge mistake. Its not my money, so I don't really care that they over spent.........it's that loss of draft picks that will kill the team in the future. They need a QB, and there would've been one at 17. There is a ton of pressure now for the Vikings to succeed with little room for error.

keep spinning it whatever way makes you feel better, Pack fans.

it won't change the fact that your front office has done absolutely nothing to make you a better team in the offseason.

Znorseman, why is Jackson so bad? Has he gotten better as the last few games and one whole year he has played as a starter? Yes. He came from a small school and wasn't Archies kid, but he is only going into his 2nd year as a starter and he showed signs of drastic improvement from his first game. Right now he is better than Eli Manning was after 18 games!! You must have watched the Vikes rip Eli apart last year and that was the same year he put it all together. Give Jackson a chance, you might be surprised.

I fail to see how people think this is a huge overspend or a HWII trade. The Herschel Walker trade was so bad because a) they mortgaged multiple years of draft picks for the "final piece" while also trading away a bunch of good players, and b) didn't use Herschel correctly when they got him. Also, the fact that Dallas drafted extremely well adds to it - no one is calling this "Ricky Williams II", which is more similar, because the Saints didn't do crap with the full draft they received in return.

Also, the #9 pick in this draft is nowhere near Jared Allen's quality. Hell, Gholston or Long are not as good as Allen and they won't even last until #9. The Vikings paid a fair price for a franchise DE.

Put another way, the Vikings traded Philip Merling, Oneil Cousins, and Quentin Demps for Jared Allen. For those of you saying, "who?" for Cousins and Demps - that's the point (hint: they're likely 3rd round picks around #73 & #82). I would do that trade 100 out of 100 times.

I don't think that Chiefs fans would be too upset. It's not like they were going to win anything this year WITH Allen. They are clearly rebuilding the team. Six picks in the top 100 (two in the first round) is a very good way to start.

Gotta love Rick Spielman, the former Dolphins GM who ran Miami into the ground with bad drafts (he must not have had any input when it came to Peterson) and even worse personnel decisions. He must be calling the shots in Minnesota now. Can't wait til the Vikings give up a 2nd rounder for A.J. Feeley! Good luck Minnesota fans!

This move means to me that...

THE VIKINGS GO "ALL-IN" ON TARVARIS JACKSON

I think this move signals that my Vikings just pushed all of their chips onto the table, betting it all on the extremely bad poker hand that is Tarvaris Jackson.

Jackson is now going on his third year as arguably the worst starting QB in the league.

The Vikings now have every piece of the puzzle in place to be a championship team, all except QB. Yet, one would have to be a little crazy to think that the team can win a championship with virtually no QB (i.e. Jackson) under center. Yet it seems as though that's exactly what they're planning to do. The addition of Allen will make the Vikings a playoff-caliber team, exclusively due to their defense and running game. Yet, it will be a team without any sort of reliable passing game, and that means it's a team that can win games, but one that has almost no chance of winning a championship.

If the organization took a QB on the first day of this year’s draft, conceivably they could push for a championship next year. Yet now they now have only one pick in the top 100, and that means that it's highly unlikely that the team will be making any proactive moves at the QB position in this year’s draft. That's NOT a good thing considering that their best QB is probably Brooks Bollinger (Ugh!), and after that they have only Tarvaris Jackson (Bleh!) and Gus Ferrotte (Seriously?). That means the QB cupboard is a bare as it gets. If the team fails to draft a young QB with potential early on draft day, and they also fail to pick up one via trade (like Sage Rosenfels), than it looks to me like Brad Childress, and the Vikings staff, are sacrificing a future championship run, for the sake of making a playoff appearance now to save their jobs. That would constitute a short-sited move that represents to me (one of the Vikings faithful) a monumental failure of the organization.

The team will have no future plan if Jackson should, once again, prove to be the flop that he has been over the last two years. Without drafting a QB in the first or second round this year, which they apparently won't be doing, the team won't have any QB going into 2009. Which means we'll be stuck with Tarvaris Jackson again, for a 4th year of utter incompetence combined with fan frustration.

In other words, I think this move signals that the Vikings will be a playoff team in 2008, but aren't going to be a contender for a championship team until at least 2010.

If marcduke's calculation is correct (which I trust), it seems the Vikings gave up the equivalent to the #9 pick and are paying the equivalent to the #1 pick for Jared Allen. And people think the Vikings got a bad deal? I can only assume that's because we overestimate the value of the draft this week of the year. It's an excellent deal for the Vikes.

Look at the last 5 or 6 3rd round picks minnesota has used and you will notice that most just couldn't make it or were borderline at best. Getting a known quality is worth something. Gaines Adams was the top de picked last year (tampa) and right now would be 3rd or 4th best de coming out this year so it looks like a good trade. Chiefs fans are upset about this one.

Ironic that this story comes out the same day as this one…

Wisconsin is #1 and Minnesota is #3 in the nation for per capita driving while intoxicated arrests. Wisconsin has more than 25% of the adult population that has had a DUI arrest in the last year! Good luck ViQueens!

Wow did Bill Parcells screw up. If they would have waited a before signing Jake Long things could have been so much different. Now that the Chiefs have 6 picks in the top 100 imagine the deal Parcells could have swung to drop from 1 to 5. This would have gotten KC out of that "no-man's land" pick at 5 and pick the player they really needed in Jake Long. And Parcells could have slid down 4 picks and taken Gohlston, Matt Ryan, Sedrick Ellis, or McFadden PLUS gotten some extra picks. Miami fans should be upset with The Tuna on this one.

Quit comparing it to the Walker trade. The Vikings gave up five players and six picks for Walker. They gave up three picks for Allen. Not even close to being the same. Plus, the Vikes would have screwed up the picks anyway, so now they have a great DE.

Boy this just keeps on getting better and better. I had heard this morning that the pick swap had been in the Vikings favor. But no.

Then we got ireckon, already downplaying Allen. He is getting paid as the top DL in the NFL, he better be in the top 2 or 3 for the next 3 or 4 years to make this all worth it.

guess what - non cynical Viking fans expect 7 or 8 sacks even if they'd traded a first and third rounder.

they'd expect 7 or 8 sacks if they signed him for 71 M as a free agent, excluding any trade scenario.

i expect a minimum of 10 and barring injury he'll easily get it.

For what the Vikes gave up he needs to have double digit sacks at least this year and next year.

"Between those draft picks they traded and the enormous contracts they gave him, Allen will be a disappointment in Minnesota if he’s anything less than the best defensive lineman in the NFL...."

With the NFC North having some pretty good offensive lineman across the board (with the exception of the Detroit Turnstiles), Allen will hardly be the best D-Lineman in the division, better yet, the league.

I love it that the Vikes dropped anchor on Koren Robinson and then would give the moon to this guy who can't help but keep putting the jag on. There's so much to do in Minneapolis/St. Paul, he should have no problem staying out of trouble....yeah.

marcduke, the #9 pick is not going to produce that much for any team this year, so if your calculations are right, I'd take Jared Allen for the #9 overall pick every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

marcduke - that is right on (depending no what draft chart you use). All the more reason NOT to look at this like the HW trade. Basically this would have been the same as trading up to acquire one of the premier DEs in the draft... only Allen is already a proven commodity.

This is no where near the HW trade, no we can quell that now. HW was a rubbing back in the decline of his career, and we traded multiple first and second rounders (plus more) for him. Allen is a beast of a DE who is just entering the prime of his career, and we traded a first and two thirds (and swapped sixth, whoopdie...)

Anyway, the last comment "Allen will be a disappointment in Minnesota if he’s anything less than the best defensive lineman in the NFL" is a bit off base. I think it would be better to say that Allen will be a disappointment in Minnesota if the Vikings have anything less than the best defensive line in the NFL. Allen is sure to take some of the double teams off from the Williams wall, which should increase their production as well.

By my calculations, that puts the total value of the drafts picks at 1357 or the equal to the #9 pick in this years draft.I think Florio's right, if this guy doesn't have 7 or 8 sacks by midseason the cynical Vikings fans will be ready to start jumping off of their roofs and windows.
