Thanks to the reader who pointed out to us the bizarre moment at the outset of Jake Long’s introductory press conference as the No. 1 overall pick of the Miami Dolphins.
Miami G.M. Jeff Ireland thanks “the CAA group” for getting the deal done, specifically mentioning Ben Dogra before mentioning Tom Condon.
But Condon, not Dogra, is Long’s agent. Dogra primarily represents Vernon Gholston, who was the other guy whom the Fins were considering at No. 1. Despite reports that the Fins never negotiated with Gholston (via Dogra), some league observers and insiders strongly believe that they did.
Meanwhile, PFTV looks at the whole Jake Long contract thing.

Dogra is going to be the pillar of Miami’s defense!

Maybe it was a backhanded slap at Dogra. Maybe he got too greedy with his demands when (or if) approached and effectively helped the ‘Phins make their decision.

Either it was a backhanded slap somehow or Ireland just has trouble talking to the press. His slip earlier in the week about the first pick being a pillar of the defense for years come started it. Put the two comments together and maybe they did want Gholston but Long agreed to the better contract (in the Dolphins eye).
