Peter King of SI.com suggests in his MMQB column (which we sometimes don’t get around to perusing until TM) that the legal stalemate between the NFL and former Patriots video employee Matt Walsh could be resolved by the end of the week. (And we’re hearing that something could happen as soon as today.)
Writes King: “I can’t imagine Roger Goodell stepping in front of the media Saturday at the draft and figuring out some other way to say, ‘I think we’re close to a deal with him’ in some different way than he’s said it 53 times in the last two months.”
Amen. The last thing the league needs is another sideshow to distract from the draft. Remember last year’s Mike Vick fiasco? Vick was in attendance at Radio City Music Hall in connection with the league’s tribute to the victims of the Virginia Tech shootings, only days after more than 50 dogs were removed from his property in Virginia.
“I’m never at the house,” Vick said while in New York. “I left the house with my family members and my cousin. They just haven’t been doing the right thing.”
(And if you don’t know the rest of that story, we suggest that you cut the hair, shave the beard, and trim the nails that have been growing during your prolonged coma.)
Though Goodell is certain to be asked about the impact of Pacman’s hush money payment to the strip club shooter, Goodell can avoid being pressed about the chronic lack of a deal with Walsh if a deal with Walsh can get done.
(For those of you who were in a prolonged coma, Walsh has strongly hinted that he knows something about previously undisclosed cheating activities by the Patriots. A February 2 report from the Boston Herald claiming that the Pats videotaped the Rams walk-through practice prior to Super Bowl XXXVI is widely believed to have been based on off-the-record information supplied by Walsh.)

If a deal is made and Walsh does have something, wouldn’t it overshadow the draft to a certain extent? I think Goodell would be peppered with more questions than if he just had the same old “we are getting closer” type of thing to say. I think that the last thing the league wants is for the Spygate thing to re-surface while one of their biggest events is going on.

This is good news. It will finally be over. Considering they are getting a deal done this close to the draft, the NFL must be fairly convinced that Walsh has nothing of substance. Otherwise, why would Goodell wait until days before the most major event between the Super Bowl and the start of training camp to get the deal done.
The last thing that Goodell would want is videotape of the Rams’ walkthrough to overshadow the draft. That is far worse than the scenario that King suggests of him where the media trying to ask him a million different ways why a deal is done. If Walsh has something, he then will have to make “another” rush to judgement and punish the Patriots and Belichick without due process or be hit with a ton of questions why the Patriots still have the 7th pick. He can’t win in this situation.
If a Walsh deal gets done before Saturday, I am even convinced that Walsh has nothing of substance. Otherwise, the league would delay a deal until after the draft.

If the Herald was dumb enough to go forward with this story without seeing the purported videotape, then I will side with the Pats fans who have claimed they were wronged.
But, I can’t imagine in today’s legal environment that a major newspaper would unleash that type of story without proof.
It’s obvious Florio doesn’t believe a tape exists…but, as a lawyer himself, wouldn’t the Herald actually KNOW (ie: view tape) more than they can PUBLISH in the paper?

I remember when all of this Matt Walsh talk first came up at the same time Princess Di passed away.
Or does it just seem like its’ been going on for that long now…it’s time to put this horse out of its’ misery already.

Let’s face it fans… there’s nothing exciting about the NFL between April’s draft and June 1st cuts, this will keep everyone entertained until then.
This is Roger Goddell keeping the NFL in the news until training camps open in July.
And Florio should be happy, it means page views in the slowest part of the calendar year.

“This is good news. It will finally be over. ” This issue will never be over. Teams will always try to find way to gain an advantage. I think coaches may seldom consider the integrity of the game and may be more focused on winning. Sure, this is pushback from the league because the league is/should be interested in the integrity of the game, but do you think that coaches cover their mics with the playbook cards because it looks cool? Perhaps there is more to Andy Reid and Mike Holmgren sharing the same mustache than previously thought. Who’s going to be the first to roll out a fierce anti-lip reading grizzly beard? It might look sexy on Gruden.

Gee what a surprise. The timing and updates always happen to be before a major NFL event. It was first reported two days before the Super Bowl. And now it resurfaces just a few days away from the Draft. Let me guess, the next time it resurfaces will be just before the Patriots play the Jets and then again before the Patriots play their first playoff game. Meet Roger Goodell - the new Vince McMahon.

KY, you can’t imagine a major paper running a story like this without checking it out? Less than a month ago, the LA Times ran a story connecting P’Diddy to the murder of Tupac. They ran it without checking the source. Turned out the source was bogus.
So, yeah, I can see a newspaper being more concerned with getting the story out first than checking the accuracy.

I don’t like the timing of this at all. IMO, all of it should have been resolved before the NFL draft.
If further punishment is warranted, then it seems that it is too late for it to be dealt with now. It should have been dealt with prior to the draft, because I don’t want this dragging on into next year. If further punishment is warranted that would involve the loss of more draft picks, then that IMO, would mean that this story won’t go away until the end of next years draft.
If no further punishment is warranted, then the timing isn’t as important.
I just want this resolved.

I was just going to post the question that filbertkiwi raised: If it turns out that Belichick and the Pats were guilty of spying prior to the Super Bowl, will it affect this year’s draft or not?

Walsh has no tapes or else he would have come forward already
Walsh is a liar. he said there was a confidentiality agreement in place. too bad the Pats have gone on record as saying there isn’t

The timing IS very interesting. Should make for an interesting weekend. My gut tells me that Walsh does have some material damaging to the Patriots and hence the league who wants to protect its integrity. I also think Walsh has “other” things that is one of the reasons he’s been so paranoid, like unauthorized ownership of gameballs, helmets, jerseys, a lock of Tom Brady’s pubic hair. I bet the Patriots and league will use this information against him in court to try to destroy his credibility. I also bet bradyswingman tries to buy the pubic hair.
