In addition to the three 2008 draft picks that the Minnesota Vikings gave up in order to acquire the rights to defensive end Jared Allen, the Vikes have made defensive end Jared Allen the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
Per Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Allen will get a six-year, $74 million deal, with $31 million in guaranteed money.
Actually, the guarantee is $31,000,069. That’s right . . . “Wine ‘em, dine ‘em, 69 ‘em.”
The deal surpasses the deal paid a year ago by the Colts to defensive end Dwight Freeney, with $30 million guaranteed on a six-year, $72 million contract.
The risk that the Vikings are taking is huge, given Allen’s history with the whole glug-glug, vroom-vroom thing. But it’s apparent that the Vikings have done plenty of homework, and are comfortable that Allen’s drinking days are behind him.

The “richest contract ever” usually lasts about 10 minutes in the NFL and if ALL players were “year to year,” teams like the Patriots and Colts wouldn’t have had those quality stretches of wins.

I was not in favor of this trade when the public discussions started last week, but I have come to think that it is a good move. Two of their last five #1 picks will not play for the Vikings this year (Williamson and Udeze); a third may not play or play effectively because of knee injuries (James); a fourth lost his first season because of a preseason knee injury (Greenway). But a #1 would not have been a lock to either contribute this year or in the future. It’s the two #3’s that I mind, because the Vikings have been able to find some good players in the later rounds. Fortunately, the pain is limited to this year’s draft. The front office is very creative and the $71 million, if that is the figure, may be structured to be as cap-friendly as possible. For all we know, there are likely-to-be-earned incentives for kicking extra-points and field goals.

Contract totals are basically meaningless ($74M). It’s the guaranteed money that matters ($31M). And if you think the Vikings just overpaid for Allen, keep in mind it’s about the same guaranteed cash as some guy who has never played a down in the NFL. And, if I’m not mistaken, less guaranteed than Jamarcus Russell. I’d far rather pay Jared Allen that cash than either Jake Long or J. Russell.

re: Duluth Viking
Yeah those two pro-bowlers on the D-line really helped you in the playoffs last year, opps, I mean they must have enjoyed playing in the pro-bowl instead of any playoff game.
This team still lacks a decent QB, has a RB how likely misses some games again, and an overrated WR. The defense has a good line which will help with the secondary but the secondary still isn’t that good.
Lastly gotta love the Vike fans downplaying the draft pick that they don’t have. That is a 180 from what 3 or 4 days ago, when they already had the hyped up sentences ready minus the actually name. Just awaiting the draft so they can insert the name and start the hype.
drafted in the 1st round is going to the next Say they had drafted a WR, he would be the next Randy Moss. Oh wait they already got him from the Bears earlier in the off-season.

Loved the way you phrased the following:
“Vikings are taking is huge, given Allen’s history with the whole glug-glug, vroom-vroom thing”
Hilarious, as always…

This is amazing! One good year and the Vikings pour gold down this hill billys throat. Kind of reminds me of the fred smoot signing after his contract year with the skins he played great too.
Vikings are the raiders of the north.

it’s great that the vikes were able to establish probably the best d-line in the nfl, but their offense is still mediocre at best. they have a solid rb, but if he gets hurt….look out. the sophomore test will prove if he can sustain. green bay will still win the division. when gb played kc last year, tauscher dominated allen.

Carl Peterson and Herm Edwards will make sure that those picks go to just as much waste being used in the NFL Draft as they were wasted by trading for Allen.
1 team gets a drunken wreck who is just scratching at a one year suspension, the other team gets some bust draft picks.

Unless this guy can suit up and play QB for the Viqueens…they aren’t going to be all that much improved overall. They’ve still got that clueless coach in Childress.
I bet the party boat tour owners on Minnetonka are lickin’ their chops..
I’ll still take the Packers defense over this team just because of the vulnerability of their D-backs. I’m looking forward to the year’s end when all of you bandwagon jumpers in MN start rippin’ your team come December after you had ‘em slated for the Super Bowl. QB’s are what gets you there…as the Packers will find out the hard way this year.

gotta love packer fans.
hey fbomb9, Tauscher doesn’t play on Jared Allen’s side. but why let the facts get in the way of a good story.
and Allen had a half sack in that game, I wouldn’t call that dominating.

bozz_2006, you telling me that Tauscher played LT, not Clifton?
I’m not sure what you call dominating, but shutting somebody out of the sack column would be a requirement in my book

No hard feelings BLOOMER. Had to raz you on that one.
Vikings very well could have a top 5 defense. Of course the Bears will have the #1 defense though!

Some Packer fans need to get Allen on a tour of the nudie bars in the Twin Cities ASAP. Get him good and liquored up and send him on his merry way. J/K. The Vikes were tough to run against last year and now they have added one of the premier pass rushers in the league. Good thing they still have Tavaris Jackson as QB yet. Hope that AP can make it through the season without injury after carrying the ball 400+ times.
