In addition to the three 2008 draft picks that the Minnesota Vikings gave up in order to acquire the rights to defensive end Jared Allen, the Vikes have made defensive end Jared Allen the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
Per Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com, Allen will get a six-year, $74 million deal, with $31 million in guaranteed money.
Actually, the guarantee is $31,000,069. That’s right . . . “Wine ‘em, dine ‘em, 69 ‘em.”
The deal surpasses the deal paid a year ago by the Colts to defensive end Dwight Freeney, with $30 million guaranteed on a six-year, $72 million contract.
The risk that the Vikings are taking is huge, given Allen’s history with the whole glug-glug, vroom-vroom thing. But it’s apparent that the Vikings have done plenty of homework, and are comfortable that Allen’s drinking days are behind him.

Come on guys…is this a surprise?..its in the Viking’s genetic code to give up multiple picks for a player…Just ask Herschel.

Congrats to the Vikes for pulling the trigger and getting their man.
They gave up a lot and are paying a lot, but their DEFENSE just WAY WAY BETTER.

As smart as the Vikings front office is….you CAN BET that there’s a clause or two IF, IF Allen does get into trouble again, that the Vikings can get money and or even draft picks back~

LOL. Yeah I’m sure the Chiefs will gladly give a few picks back to the Vikings if Allen gets another DUI, Bloomer. That must be one smart front office!

Sorry to break it to you, A-10, but you obviously are clueless in your feeble attempt to compare it to the Herschel trade. 11 players for Herschel Walker does not equal 3 for Jared Allen.

Too bad they still have Tavaris Jackson. The better hope they can find a QB.

Damn. A first, two thirds, and 31 mil guaranteed? That’s a lot. The Cheaps got the best deal they could. If they have a good draft, it will be interesting in a few years.

This is not even close to the Walker trade. And if it goes bad then they lost three picks this year not this year and 09 10 11 12 like the walker trade. They can cut him if necessary and they pay him for one year. And chances are 2 of the draft picks they would have made would have busted anyway. I say good odds.

Aaron Kampman has got to be sick right now. He’s a solid player for the Packers, with a high motor and 27.5 sacks in the past 2 years, compared to Allen who has 23. Anyways, he’s signed to a much smaller contract than Jared Allen.
Oh well, at least everyone knows that he’s probably going to last about 5 years before the Vikings cut him.

You would have thought Minnesota learned SOMETHING from giving all those picks up for the Hershal Walker trade… GUESS NOT!
And who says history doesn’t repeat itself. Silly Vikings. LMAO.

That’s a lot of coin for a guy one more arrest away from missing at least half a season or longer.
What was stopping the Vikes from doing this after they selected a player with their first round pick? They could have given up a 2009 and 2010 first rounders instead. Were the ViQueens thinking the Chiefs would match a deal that large?
This will backfire on the ViQueens.

A 1st and two 3rds? Not a bad value for a fourth round pick a few years ago that we probably would have lost to free agency next year. No way Carl was every going to pay a contract even close to what the Vikings just gave him. Thank you Vikings.

i want to see the yearly breakdown of the deal…it could be a Nate Clemens situation where the last year is heavilly inflated to make the agent look better…

This is a no-brainer. Odds are (and the Chiefs know it) that all those picks together will not replace a player like Jared Allen, and this will still cost them millions in crap-shoot players’ contracts and development time…unless they group the picks and trade for another player like Allen.

Wake up…realize that players are now on a year to year, if I feel like playing hard I will…if not I won’t…mentality. See fat ass Haynesworth. Sure, that defense may be great next year…but there’s just as much a chance it will suck…that, my friends, is the NFL Today.
