We expressed a little skepticism regarding the assertiong of Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff that he is getting calls from teams who are interested in moving into the No. 3 spot in round one.
As it turns out, the Falcons have gotten calls. One of them came from the New Orleans Saints, who were linked last week to the St. Louis Rams at No. 2.
The Saints are believed to be hoping to move up in an effort to land LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey. They currently hold the 10th overall pick in the draft.
As a practical matter, however, the Saints should refrain from actually pulling the trigger until the Falcons are on the clock with Dorsey on the board. Otherwise, the Saints would be risking that someone else will move ahead of them to get Dorsey first.

the trade just doesn’t make sense.
it seems Atlanta is poised to either take Dorsey (negating the trade) or take Matt Ryan (which they couldn’t do if they traded down to 10)
not only that but they would be trading into their own division with the Saints.
Who would they pick at #10?
a Offensive Tackle? Corner?

Another option could be trying to swap places with New England (who are probably interested in sliding down) and then taking Sedrick Ellis.
But is Ellis as good as Dorsey? Depends on who you ask, apparently.

Another angle to look at between Ellis and Dorsey is that Ellis is the hometown boy. It never hurts to have a homegrown star playing on your team. Not that that should be a reason to trade up and draft Dorsey if Ellis is an equal talent. Either one would be a major upgrade to the middle of that line, and it would make their pass rush something fierce.

The Saints will never get the Falcons to trade with them. The Falcons are the Saints biggest rival. Not going to happen.

Punt99. Dorsey is actually the hometown boy, which plays a part in why the Saints want to move up for him instead of getting Sedrick Ellis cheaper. They would not only be picking a guy being hailed as the next Warren Sapp, but also a guy who was a big part of LSU’s National Championship.

Warren Sapp was overrated.
