Bengals linebacker David Pollack, a first-round pick in 2005 whose career was derailed by a broken neck suffered in 2006, has decided not to pursue a return to the NFL.
Coach Marvin Lewis acknowledged Pollack’s decision on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, there’s something about this passage from Bengals.com that is bothering us: “Pollack, a defensive end at Georgia that the Bengals chose No. 17, had a tough, brief pro career that was in such contrast to his All-American run. His switch to strongside linebacker was complicated by a nearly three-week holdout and injuries limited him to 14 games, but he did become the first Bengals rookie to log a postseason sack and with four of his 4.5 sacks coming late in the season he looked to have turned the corner.”
The guy’s career was dramatically shortened by a broken neck, and the team is dredging up the fact that he held out for three weeks as a rookie? And should Pollack also be regarded as injury-prone or soft because he only played in 14 of 16 games as a rookie?
We’re not suggesting that Geoff Hobson’s assessment crosses the line; it just strikes us as bad form to be saying anything other than good things about Pollack on the day that his inability to continue what looked to be a very promising pro football career has become official.
And that’s coming from a web site that is always looking for a negative angle.
While we’re feeling all warm and fuzzy, we should point out that we’ll never forget this play from Pollack’s college days. (We HIGHLY recommend watching it until the end.)

If you think that is bad, you should have seen the first release from Hobson. There were 3 lines dedicated to Pollack’s retirement and 21 dedicated to Chad Johnson’s saga.
Pollack is probably one of the most respected guys by Bengal fans (though some of it is likely only due to him suffering his injury) and was a clean-cut good guy on the team at a time we needed just that.
He recently posted workout numbers that verified he could have physically still put forth the effort you’d expect from a first round pick. You’ve got to applaud the guy, though, for making the safe decision given his family situation.

Hobson’s articles get worse and worse. Take a look at some of them and see how poorly written they are. It is amazing the man gets paid to write. Not only are his writing skills poor but he has also seemed to have lost his mind of late. He has no idea how the salary cap works and just glosses over the post June 1st transaction implications and says that if the Bengals traded Chad, we’d have to cut some starters. Moreover, of late, he’s suggested that the Bengals take a cornerback this year even though:
-we have taken one the past two years
-we have desperate needs at DT, LB and WR
It is a common thought among Bengals fans that anything Hobson says should be discounted, his articles are unbearable and he has no business covering a professional football team.

big surprise that the bungles bungled this as well. this has always been a low class organization run by penny pinching owners. although their stance with Ocho Stinko is correct. I’d call his bluff and make him stay out. When he dogs it, I would fine him, suspend him, and try to get his signing bonus back if possible. He is a cancer that needs to be cut out of the NFL.

Is it any wonder the Bengals franchise is the laughing stock of the NFL? Why would any player want to go play for this team?
From all indications David Pollack was a “good guy”. I’ve read things about him that indicate he was deeply religious and family oriented.
Now, because he’s not willing to risk permanent paralysis, the official team website is taking backhanded slaps at him.
They ain’t called the BUNGLES for nothing!!!

That was pretty classless from the writer. What’s the point of kicking him on his way out the door? So he held out…that’s not terribly uncommon. Get over it, already. No wonder the franchise has such a lousy reputation.

David Pollack deserves better then that from the Bengals. I remember watching him in college and praying he would fall to the Eagles in the draft, which unfortunately never happened. He looked so promising before his injury, but I promise this wont be the last you hear of him. He is incredibly charismatic and well spoken, and it wont be long before his face is popping up every Saturday or Sunday afternoon.

As a UGA fan who watched nearly all of Pollack’s games, I have to say that David Pollack was a hell of a player. It’s a real shame that he’s hanging them up.
(That Jill Arrington “Pollock” slip-up is great. At least Mark Richt was aware enough to correct her.)

And as for the post by the Cincy reporter… I think that is disgusting.

i don’t have to look at the clip (firewall at work) and know it is the game vs USC. I was at that game and could not believe it when it happened. Aside from the weather that day, it was the most remarkable thing I had seen in a long time!
