The Cincinnati Bengals have consistently made it known, publicly and privately, that they will not trade receiver Chad Johnson.
But, nevertheless, an effort has been made to trade for him.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the Washington Redskins offered a first-round pick in 2008 and another draft pick in 2009 for the disgruntled wideout, who has made his desire to get out of Cincinnati abundantly clear over the past few months.
The 2009 pick actually could escalate to a first-rounder, based on Johnson’s performance in 2008.
Mort points out that it’s not the first time that the Redskins have approached the Bengals, but it’s the ”first significant proposal.”
Here’s our take on all of this — the Bengals should be very concerned about the possibility of tampering. The Redskins have enjoyed over the years a very strong relationship with Drew Rosenhaus, Johnson’s agent. And it is believed by some league observers that Chad’s campaign to be traded arose not from his zeal to wear a new uniform but from his desire to stuff more money into his pockets.
Thus, if the Redskins were willing to make such a strong and specific offer for Johnson, it’s hard not to think that they have an idea as to the contract extension that Johnson (via Rosenhaus) would accept.
And that, of course, would be tampering.
We realize that the reader comments to this item will include some folks suggesting that we quit worrying about tampering, but a situation like this presents the prime example of how unauthorized communications with a player who belongs to another team can undermine that team’s relationship with its player. If no one were interested in trading for (and, presumably, paying) Johnson, then Johnson might quit embarrassing the team (and himself) by providing rambling, pointless interviews that reiterate his desire to play elsewhere. The notion that another team is willing to give him what he wants financially (if that’s what is happening) will serve only to embolden him.
In our view, the fact that the Redskins would be willing to give up so much for a player who clearly has at best impulse control problems and at worse some type of full-blown personality disorder makes us wonder whether the “I want to be traded today, and if not today then tomorrow, and if not tomorrow then the next day” routine is part of a broader wink-nod arrangement that Chad will pretend to be Ocho Psycho in the hopes that the Bengals will finally decide to let him go.
We’re not saying that’s what happening, but it’s hard not to wonder whether that’s what’s happening.

I know the Bengals are trying to make a point, but it seems crazy that they still won’t part with Chad Johnson when offered a first round pick and a third rounder than can escalate to a first rounder. This is a win-win situation for the Bengals and they can justify the move since it’s not like they are dumping Johnson for nothing.

I say keep pulling the league on the carpet with the tampering issue until they have rules that are practical, realistic and consistent!

Maybe Chad will finally figure out now that the Bengals really aren’t trading him, no matter what the offer. It doesn’t get better than two firsts (considering the ‘09 pick did escalate).

I’m sure news of this won’t pi$s Chad off even more.
If the Bungles let this be known, they’re really trying to make Chad mad.
They essentially just passed on trading Chad out of the conference for 2 1st rounders? Weak Marvin, weak.

If the tampering proves to be legit, Washington might end up giving up a first-rounder after all. Good points, Florio. Although, as a Bengals fan, if they did accept a first-rounder for Chad, they’d just screw up the pick anyway. It’s more entertaining to “Keyshawn” his ass for the year.

If the offer is legitimate,The Bungles once again show their incompetence by not accepting this offer. To be able to rid yourself of the collosal pain in the ass that Ocho Whine-o has become for probably 2 #1 picks is a no-brainer.Then again this is The Bungles and Mike Clown we’re talking about………

Coming from a die hard skins fan (still hold season tix) living just north of Cincinnati:
Danny and Vinny are egocentric idiots. They feel a ridiculous need to be the “champs of the offseason” and overpay underperforming players. We have 9 draft picks and these guys want to trade and pay a locker room cancer. If Cincy is stupid enough to want Johnson to stay let them have it. I can’t believe they even offered that deal. We still have dead cap space from another cancer we signed and didn’t do squat (see Lloyd, Brandon). Sometimes I want to apply for GM of the Redskins, oh wait, we don’t even have one…

I know that The Bengals ownership wants to teach Chad a lesson, but you have to seriously consider getting two first rounders out of the guy….but in actuality, that would cause a salary cap problem with Cincy….if that trade was made, they would be stuck having to be on the hook for signing bonuses for two first rounders this year and two first rounders next year….that would eat up alot of salary….

The Bengals better get rid of Chad before he becomes a colossal headache. A first round pick this year and a pick next year is very fair!

This doesn’t seem very smart on the Bengals part. That seems like a helluva deal. There is no way they can get more than that for him. Plus two high draft picks could help turn a miserable defense around.

Hey Lee the Bungles started the season with the third most amount of money under the cap (33 mil) and they have added a back up tight end, a good defensive end, and a bunch of tomato can linebackers. This team has money.

Aside from the tampering issues, is this a good deal? Should the Bengals take it or do they think they can do even better? As much as I (a Bengals fan) would like to see Chad sit and rot for a year, it’s clearly in the team’s best long-term interest to unload him.
And I don’t buy the cap-hit business, although most of that rhetoric has been coming from the media, not the team itself.
Personally I think the whole “no way, no how” stance by the team is just to gain leverage (which if this rumor is true may be working) for a better deal.
Surely the Bengals can’t think that if they do force Chad to stay, he’ll somehow take back everything he’s said, be welcomed back into the locker and become a productive player, do they? My experience as a fan tells me only the Bengals and Mike Brown would be dumb enough.

Wow! As a Bengal fan I wish nothing more than for Chad to suffer and have to suck it up, but two first rounders is impressive trade bait.
I’d seriously have to consider that offer if I was Mike Brown.
On the other hand, those 2 first rounders this year and next plus Chad’s cap hit make it unrealistic for a trade to go down.
Anyone know if the Bengals can sign Chad to an extension with less of a cap hit and then trade him? If so, I’d pull the trigger on the ‘Skins offer.

This is the best offer the Bungles will get for Chad and they know it, if they rejected this trade then its because they are set at dealing with this situation. A first and a 3rd really is good value regardless of what some people think for a star WR. If it turned out he met the escalators in the deal for the 1st round next year then it would still be a good year because he performed well for us and while im sure the escalators would not be overtop rediculous to meet they would not be very easy either.
Goodluck Bengals, while you guys are still sitting on your bums trying to figure out wtf to do about that chad situation skin, dallas, eagles will move right on looking at other teams offering deals close to what you could have had.

It is all about the Money then Chad and his Agent should have made a better deal two years ago. Now it time for Chad the whiner to just play. He made a lot of catches for yards. But he dropped more than he caught in close situations.

The 21st pick in the draft will not eat up nearly the ammount of the top players, and if it really was a problem they could trade the 21st pick away as its a good value position for trade in this years draft.

A common denominator in a lot of these malcontent cases is Rosenhaus. The way to solve it then would be for teams to refuse to have anything to do with players he represents. Not all agents are egomaniacs.Since greedy owners would never do that, they have to deal with the fruits of their shortsightedness.

The Bungles deserve nothing for letting Ocho go. Salary cap hit? Are you kidding me? Do they ever even approach going over the cap?
Free Ocho Stinko. They would be so stupid not to take that deal. What if Chad shows up to Bungle camp and says he pulled a hammy? Strained my groin, is on his period, whatever, what then Bungle fans?
You try to trade him then and get next to nothing. I know that since you have no scouting department or GM that draft picks may as well be magic beans for you, but if there was anyone with a clue in charge anywhere in that part of Ohio, then they would be getting whatever they can to get Chad out of town.
Why would you want to force him to play for the Bungles? There are at least 15 other teams that would take him, but he is not going to just forget about whatever set him off and come back and give maximum effort at anything but getting out of town.
Let him payback the bonus money if the salary cap is at issue. Then they get no draft picks though, but this has become a control issue not a football one and I am on Ocho’s side.

I don’t know that this is all about money. I personally think that Chad has seen the reaction to his ill-thought out ‘HOF 20??’ jacket and realised that he is far from a lock to enter Canton.
If you don’t believe me, Randy Moss was considered a workshy team wrecker during his Oakland days. Right now it’s hard to think of many people who would say he doesn’t have a very good shot at the HOF. His production is on a par with Moss, but his game changing abilities are possibly never going to be seen on a championship team, or even in a conference championship game at the Bengals’ current rate of attrition.
If it was about money, god knows Chad could have carried on with the ‘everyone’s favourite WR’ act he’s had on for the last few years and cashed in when his career is over. He still could, but he’s going to need to rebuild some serious damage here.

Rofl KY I know everytime I read a response by an eagle fan they feel lito sheppard and a 3rd is like amazing value. Eagle fans please realize your own team does not want to keep Lito and there doesnt seem to be much of a market for him and he is on the trading block. Time to be realistic about the value.
