Although the bigger issue is whether the Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs can work out a deal for a trade of defensive end Jared Allen’s rights from the Chiefs to the Vikings, the Kansas City Star reports that the Vikes and Allen are close to an agreement as to the long-term deal that would be signed by the player if/when he’s wearing purple.
And, as we heard on Sunday, the Vikings are likely to sign Allen to an offer sheet after the draft, if the Chiefs and the Vikings can’t work out the terms of a trade.
While such an approach would risk that the Chiefs will trade Allen elsewhere (such as Tampa), the reality is that, if Allen has decided that he wants to play for the Vikings, he can essentially block a trade to another team by refusing to sign a long-term contract there. Absent a multi-year deal, the team getting Allen would be getting him only for one season.
Per many published reports, the Vikings are willing to give up a first-round pick and a third-round pick, but the Chiefs want a first-round pick and a second-round pick.
Allen ended his visit to Minnesota on Sunday. Per league rule, such visits may last only two days.

I hope the Vikings get him in the end for a first and second round pick. Spread it out over two years so that way they can plan for the future. I have mixed emotions about giving up two first round picks for Allen, I mean, their defense is pretty solid already. Adding Allen would make them a scarier threat close to Purple Pride, but they need a few high picks to focus on their offense. Any team with the names: Jackson, Bollinger, and Frerotte doesn’t exactly look promising for the future.

Talk about a great scenerio for the Vikes! If we happen to have one of the “stud” DE’s fall to us in the draft (stranger things have happened) we can just forget about this little trade. But it really allows the Vikings a bit more freedom in the draft not NEEDING to draft a DE if you’ve got a “stud” waiting to join the team after. Now we can go with the best “available player”….and that worked out pretty well for them last year!!

A first and a second? That can’t be right. Surely the Chiefs would know that a 1 and 2 is heavily overpriced for Allen.
But, to the Chiefs credit paying a 1 and 3 really shows a great desire for this player. A 1 and 3 may be overpricing him.

I don’t know how I’d feel about giving this much up for a guy who only reached his potential in a contract year…who already has two DUIs…I would have to sign him to a highly incentive laden contract. Granted, He’s worth some pretty high incentives, but I’d probably give him a low base, and a roster bonus each and every year to make him one of the highest paid in the league. I don’t know how that would effect cap planning though…and the agent might not like that.

I don’t see why the Vikings would rather lose 2, 1st round picks opposed to only 1 and a second round pick. Obviously, the Vikings would choose the latter not the former. It is implausible that the Vikings give up 2 first round picks for Allen.
Allen did not just have a great year in a contract year (JayPhilly), since 2004 he anchored the Chiefs defensive line. Also, he had 15.5 sacks in 2 less games this past year due to his suspension. He is definitely worth a 1st and 2nd round pick.

Spielman just loves tossing away draft picks. Glad it’s not my team he’s running into the ground this time.

If there is a pre-draft deal for a 1st and 2nd rounder- the picks absolutely need to be split up. A first and a third, considering the vikes have two thirds this year, is worthy of pulling the trigger on the vikes end.

Romans58,
Fair enough. I think that I was remembering how the Chiefs were averse to giving him a long term contract due to his two DUIs, but I equated that to the Alexander effect. My mistake. Either way, I stand by idea on his contract, or at least however you could protect yourself against a suspension.

Why don’t we just resign Holcomb and then trade him, Erasmus James, Antoine Walker, and Lew Ford’s pre-move-to-Japan AAA contract for Allen? I think that’s fair — Walker’s contract is an expiring one you know, which is great for cap reasons.

It will be this years 2nd, next years 3rd, and Bryant McKinnie to KC for Allen…then the Vikes take a stud OL in this years 1st round.

It appears that Carl ” wish I was Adrian” Peterson is feeling the nostalgia that accompanies trading Chiefs. As I recall, Carl haggled over the Trent Green draft pick long enough to require a new case of hair tonic, and his ray-bans wore out. Look at Trent now. Poor, poor Trent.

I have to agree somewhat with topher….. I believe a trade for Jared Allen would be worth a 1st and a 2nd..If there was already a long term contract in place…But absent a long term contract..No he is not worth a first and a Second. The Vikings will have to pony up probably the richest contract to this date for his possition. If the chiefs had three years left on a reasonably negotiated long term contract and were looking to trade him…Yes a First and well heck… Make it 2 firsts.. Jared Is A hell of a player..Quite possibly the best at his possition…. And all of that is before throwing the possiblility of a long term suspension in the event of another alcohol related incident…. You mentioned in another post that Brady Quinn may have set the guideline with a first and a second…. Well if Brady Quinn Gets pulled over..He is not suspended for a season….

Allen is easily worth a 1st and a 2nd. Look at the draft trade chart (the real one, not the one the Eagles put out to try to dupe someone into trading down with them for cheap): The Vikings #17 and #47 picks add up to 1380 points, the equivalent of the 8th or 9th pick overall. If Allen were coming out of college this, knowing what we know (NFL sack leader in 14 games, forces a lot of fumbles, defensive leader, etc.) he would easily be taken that high, even with the character concerns, which, at least on the surface, seem to have cleared up.

Allen would be an elite prospect as long as he can keep his nose clean. His addition would make the Vikings defense elite.
However, two 1st round picks is not acceptable unless the team drafts a QB (Brohm or Ryan) in round 1 this year. Why? Because I think it’s clear that Tarvaris Jackson is not going to be good enough to be anything more than a backup QB in this league. That said, we have to get a QB of the future now, before losing 2 1st round picks to KC and thus eliminating our ability to get such a player in the future.
Once that is done, and we have a franchise QB who is, you know, actually able to play QB, this team would be catapulted into an elite status from a defensive perspective… and in 2009 when our new franchise QB took over the starting QB role from the happless and hopeless Tarvaris Jackson, the Vikings would become and elite offense, combined with an elite defense, and that would equate to a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

they want a 1st and 2nd never heard anyone say anything about 2 number 1’s. If they dont accept the 1st and 3rd we will probly offer our other 3rd rounder. The Chiefs were said to want picks for this year they need 7 starters from the daft. Also Vikes are close to deal with Allen so if he likes our long term deal he can also block a trade elsewhere like tampa the only other team interested.
