Carolina Panthers receiver Steve Smith has been hoping to get on the team another pass-catcher who can take some of the pressure off one of the best wideouts in the game.
Last year, the Panthers used a second-round pick on Dwayne Jarrett, a guy whom many expected to be a first-rounder, but who slid due to subpar pre-draft workouts. The Panthers felt so strongly about Jarrett that they dumped Keyshawn Johnson.
But Jarrett played in only seven games a year ago, catching only six passes for 73 yards for the entire campaign.
On Monday, Smith sounded off about Jarrett’s possible future, if he doesn’t turn things around.
Asked if Jarrett is due for a coming-out party in his second NFL season, Smith said, “You know, the party session is actually over. This is the NFL. You make plays. You’re here to play football. You do the party scene at your own discretion, but on Sundays, we’re here to play football. If you can’t play football, you won’t be playing with the Carolina Panthers or any NFL team.”
And then Smith said that his comments aren’t “a poke at anybody.” Even though he was responding to a direct question about Dwayne Jarrett.

I’d hate to see that talent go to waste

Remember how he kept saying prior to the draft that he wasn’t in any way similar to Mike Williams?
That was funny.

At least Mike Willams signed a huge contract for being a top draft pick before wasting his talent

Let this be a lesson to all the fans frothing at the mouth for their team to take a receiver in round one.

Hopefully D.J. Hackett can stay healthy and take some pressure off Steve Smith. Dwayne Jarrett needs to get on his game or he won’t have a job in 2 years.

Wasn’t he another of those “can’t miss” jewels from a USC team that the Longhorns punked?

How ironic that Keshawn Johnson was the one who, before last year’s draft, said that there was no way Jarrett was ready for the NFL.

Should have taken the other Steve Smith instead. That would be confusing as hell.

As for the Mike Williams comparisons, Williams actually had 29 receptions in his rookie year. So Jarrett better take it up a few notches this year.

dwayne jarrett is your typical, lazy, pot smoking overweight usc receiver bust like johnnie mitchell, rj soward, and mike williams. Dwayne Jarrett just looks like a mess, the guy was acting all cocky about how he was different than mike williams, the only difference is that jarrett isnt 270 lbs. yet.

Whoa, whoa whoa! So the guy wasn’t Randy Moss in his rookie year - You have to give a receiver a few years before he’s a confirmed bust. You guys are too rough on the kid (and that’s from a Philly guy!)

Why let go of Keyshawn, He still had a few years left under his belt til and he could have groomed this bust. The panthers are at as much fault as jarret.

I read this post and the first thing I thought was “I wonder how well Steve Smith did his rookie year.” so I looked it up. He had 10 receptions for 154 yards. It doesn’t look like the party ended there for him.
