When the Pittsburgh Steelers opted to use the transition tag on offensive lineman Max Starks, which gave them only the right to match any offers but no compensation if he joined a new team, we wondered why they didn’t simply pony up the additional $500,000 or so for the ability to use the franchise tag on guard Alan Faneca.
And then when no one made an offer to Starks — in fact, we can’t recall a single visit that he took to another team — we wondered why they didn’t rescind the tag.
It’s now too late. As MDS pointed out over the weekend, Starks has signed his transition tender. Though the transition tender did not become fully guaranteed when accepted under the pre-2006 Collective Bargaining Agreement, the pay is now fully and completely guaranteed due to the latest version of the CBA.
Thus, the Steelers are on the hook for $6.9 million for only one year of service from Starks.
Starks lost his starting job to Willie Colon before the regular-season began, and Starks only started in four games last season. But Starks is now only second in pay behind quarterback Ben Roethlisberger on a roster that surely includes a few guys who’ll wonder why in the hell they’re getting so much less than a guy who might be spending much of his time in 2008 exactly where he spent it in 2007 — on the bench.
If the Steelers had removed the tag, Starks would have been an unrestricted free agent. And so they would have had to try to sign him to a new contract while bidding against other teams.
The reality, however, is that the Steelers could have gotten him for a lot less than $6.9 million this season.

Way to be more off base than a pinch runner on acid.
First of all, Faneca was never going to re-up with the Steelers, so any talk of getting him back is moot.
Second of all, don’t be so sure Starks rides the pine next season. He may just end up at right tackle, with Colon moving inside to guard (his natural position). That in itself would improve the Steelers line before they draft a single player.

The Steelers have almost never used the Franchise Tag. Other teams use it as a weapon on a regular basis. The Steelers don’t. Only once since it’s inception as I recall (Gildon) and that was to get more time to negotiate. They didn’t use it with Alan out of respect for him and, frankly, not to send him into a rage that would have ruptured a few blood vessels.
As for Starks, the reason he was transitioned is because they wanted the market to sort out what he was worth. It has spoken and his value obviously isn’t high. At the same time, the Steelers OL isn’t in the best shape, so they need him, even if it’s in a backup role.
Here’s the bottom line… Starks represents overpriced insurance for one year. If they had yanked the transition tag, he could have signed anywhere for a relatively low contract and they’d have lost that insurance. Yes, they’re overpaying in the short term, but given the state of their OL, it’s better than the alternative.

Marvel, isn’t $6.9M a lot for a right tackle? If this guy couldn’t even start, it seems they could have done better. You probably know the Steelers offensive line better than I do. But Roethlisberger did seem to be getting snot kicked out of him last year.

Masked Marvel,
1st, “Way to be more off base than a pinch runner on acid.” - not funny. Stick to your day job.
2nd, “First of all, Faneca was never going to re-up with the Steelers, so any talk of getting him back is moot.” Florio points out for $500,000 more they could have used the franchise tender on Faneca, so that would have restricted his movement, making it not moot.
3rd, regardless of whether Starks plays, rides the pine, or plays QB next year, the fact remains that by rescinding the tag & negotiating with him, they most likely could have gotten him for much less that the $6.9 mil.
4th, other than that your comments were right on the money. Well done. Nice contribution. Have another Iron City on me.

This was a mistake. Faneca would have stayed if he got the same contract the Jets gave him. the Steelers like to play finacial hardball with quality veteran players. This time they kept the wrong lineman. I was not at all impressed with anyone on the line execpt for Fanneca who is one of the best of all time.
Glad to see him walk the new line is going to get a whole lot of Ngata vs Harm City D line.

I like the analogy but you don’t really give any reasons why he’s off base. If they franchised Faneca he’d be on the Steelers next year - he could hold out, but even if he did you could trade him and get something pretty significant in return considering his apparent value.
Your second point is pure conjecture - as of now Starks is a pine rider and obviously isn’t worth that kind of cash regardless. 7 million dollar players aren’t supposed to get beat out of the lineup like Starks was last year.

I have to think it doesn’t bode well for Starks if he got beat out at right tackle by a guy whose natural position is guard…Faneca’s situation aside, I have to wonder why they gave him the transition tag in the first place. Especially after the effectiveness of that tag got blowed out by the Vikes a couple years back.

This whole thing has been baffling to me from the beginning. The Steelers have never been run by idiots so I assume there is some thought behind it but I have no idea what it is. I have never heard or read anything from the local media about it, and quite frankly they seldom ask tough questions of the Steelers. I always thought they were afraid of Cowher, but they are also very gentle with Tomlin and Colbert. I’ve asked Ed Bouchette in his online chats about the whole transition/franchise question and all he has ever said is “The Steelers will not tag Faneca”. I ask the reason and he doesn’t elaborate. Maybe it is out of respect for what he’s done for them but until the question is answered it’s a mystery to me.

If Starks is worth 6.9 million for a year, then how much is the real starter (Willie Colon) worth next year? 8 million?

points:
1. Max Starks will start next year.
2. yes, $7 mil is a lot. But at least it’s all over after this year; it’s a lot but it’s low risk for the future.
3. The Steelers don’t do business like most teams. The Rooney’s don’t franchise players who want to leave.

Eric, Mayebe they didn’t read the new CBA rules. That would be pretty stupid but it’s about the only thing that makes any sense.

Hey Pastabelly — keep in mind that at one point Starks was a starter, and the team was pretty pleased with the job he did stepping in at LT last season. Nobody’s saying Starks is headed for Canton, but he could be the answer at RT. Especially as it would allow Colon to move inside — that would help Ben not get the mucus knocked from his nasal passages as much. They may be overpaying, but maybe not as much as you think.
Now as for the douche known as BDawkins — I just love it when know-nothings stick their noses into things. Because if you had clue one about the Steelers, Dawky, you’d know that they weren’t going to disrespect Faneca’s wishes no matter what. Faneca made it clear he was not going to play another down for the Steelers, and they had no intention of “restricting” his movement, both out of respect and the self-interest of not wanting a hold-out on their hands. Have I dumbed it down enough for your level now, big boy?
Glad to know you’re the humor expert here too, self-appointed boy. And please, leave my job out of it, OK? I don’t come down to your workplace and knock the toilet brush out of your hands.

All joking about Starks and the $6.9 million worth of cheeseburgers he is about to by, I think there is a lot more to this story than meets the eye…Starks played LT at the end of last year, and did so at a surprisingly high level, relatively speaking of course…A organization with a track record like the Steelers doesn’t pay a back-up RT this kinda cash, so I’m guessing Marvel Smith’s back is in pretty bad shape and they plan on Starks playing at LT in 08…

That’s certainly another possibility, BBen, and if Starks can handle that role, the Steelers will have ended up getting a bargain.

I think it’s the case, reports on Marvel have been very hush hush this offseason….i think his injury is pretty serious and they figure Starks can play LT, they can grab a guy like Cherilus to play RT and then move Colon to G…
