I don't know if it's possible to cut your losses after your problem child retires your first ballot hall of fame QB prematurely. Phillips wasn't cut until much later, by the way. About two months later, after the team suspended him for three games for getting into a confrontation with a coach.

He was seeking payment for "Services rendered" not services to be performed.

Looks like Arvin Edwards just sidestepped the Nevada Dept. of Employment's wage resolution process. (Is that legal?)

I think you pacman supports are missing something in this story. If Goodell aks packman if he knew the shooter, and he said no, lying to Goodell is not going to help his case.

This story makes it sound like not only did pacman know him, but he was probable rolling pacman blunts in the back seat of the car BEFORE they got to the strip club.

Of course, once Phillips totally whiffed on blocking an AZ pass rusher, Steve Young's career ended abruptly. And LP was cut.

Walsh cut his losses immediately.

How dumb do the Titans look if this turns out to be the reason Pacman get's a lifetime ban? They could've traded him to the Cowboys weeks ago.

Why not, CapsLock? Many teams have taken chances on guys that have been in a lot of trouble. Jerry Jones isn't cornering any market, here. Bill Walsh brought Lawrence Phillips AND Tim "Six Pack" Harris to the 49ers. Ron Wolf once claimed a guy off waivers, even though he was serving an indefinite suspension for refusing to enter the substance abuse program.

Pacman should have followed the Ted Kennedy rule; call your lawyers first. I am sure they would have given him better advice than to pay the money.

As a Cowboys fan, I hope this guy never gets back in the league. Pacman cant seem to keep is nose clean, his past keeps coming back to haunt him, and allowing someone like that back in to the NFL will tarnish the reputation of the entire league, not just whatever team picks him up.

If I were Goodell, I'd change the indefinite suspension to life long ban, and while I was at it, I'd probably add Pukeman to that list as well.

Florio you are a genius my man. You have people responding to you like you are actaully important. Getting mad at you for your own opinion of people and teams. You have made it big time when people hate you for what you are saying. Bravo my good man and keep up the insults. I still find them hilarious.

OK, maybe the money was extortion - don't kill me because I know who you are and what you did. Fair enough.

He would not have had to pay extortion money to the shooter had he not been at least partially involved in the shooting. Since he told the league, while he was suspended, that he played no role in the events, he violated the terms of his suspension. He was at least partially guilty of an incident which cost someone his ability to walk, simply because that person assisted in kicking him out of a nightclub after he allegedly hit a stripper.

He pleaded no contest to assaulting a cop, has settled several assault issues out of court, yet he is "misunderstood" and a victim of the media. The Vegas thing occurred after his suspension, and did not count against his suspension last year; neither did the assault case in Georgia last year. Please actually try to learn the whole story before you ask everyone to give PacMan a break.

To date PacMan has:

1) Committed several assault misdemeanors and felonies, and pleaded guilty to all of them (except when he settled out of court).

2) Cooperated with authorities only when threated with possible legal action (as in the Las Vegas and Georgia cases).

3) Shown absolutely no remorse for his actions, while also admitting that he'll "never say never" about returning to the strip clubs that cause him so many problems.

4) Directly violated the terms of the suspension (his pro wrestling stint), only stepping out of the event when the league had to remind him.

5) He also agreed to do at least one late night "Make it Rain" party a year after he was involved in a shooting (albeit as an accessory or witness). The sure sign of someone who's shown contrition, and the errors of his ways.

Those of you supporting him, remember that the 10th time's the charm!

what makes him guilty (or at least appear guilty) is that he did not report to the proper authorities the extortion attempt and, apparently, would not be a cooperating witness if charges were made, since they weren't. it sounds like it was a 'keep quiet' payment albeit rediculously low. this line from the article is quite telling as previous reports had indicated that jones spoke with a man (presumably the same guy) and moments later shots were fired. it was also previously reported that jones had given an order to shoot. with that in mind, this line is compelling:

'About a week later, someone began contacting Jones by telephone seeking money for "services rendered," according to the police report filed to obtain Edwards' arrest warrant.'

then it goes on to say that he gave the friend that paid part of the money $10k just for paying it..hmmmmm. why would you pay ten grand to a thug who is acting on the behalf of the guy who is extorting money from pacman unless it is hush money.

this new twist stinks of hush money payments. if he was making the payments because he was afraid of the guy then why would he then pick him out of a line-up. he could have had him jailed for the extortion attempts in the first place.

at minimum, goodell should not allow him back into the league until this mess is cleared up and a logical explanation is in place. i would LOVE to hear that explanation!

I'm beginning to tire of Florio's agenda against or for certain players. The snipes are funny the first time or two, but it just gets to the point where it annoys me. Like, we get it... you don't like Chad Johnson. You don't like PacMan (I don't either), you think Jared Allen is still a drunk... but EVERY STORY about him doesn't need to be like LOL HES GONNA FALL OFF THE WAGON LOL. The guy hasn't been in trouble in almost 2 years whilst tearing up the NFL on the field. But no, we won't let people accept that the man has changed his behavior. We'll keep on hammering home that he got TWO DUIs!! You've never had a friend or family member get a DUI? Some people are ALCOHOLICS... its a problem. I won't call it a disease, but its at least a mental dependence. Anyways, thats my rant. Sorry its off topic.

I am in agreeement...the article, which is not the only one, clearly states that he paid the money to keep his family and himself out of harm, obviously a clear threat since the guy allegedly shot up a strip club. The cops stated that he has been helping for a very long time, and even went to ID the guy.

I have no sympathy for Pacman, but try and keep the immediate bashing to a minimum since on the surface it looks like he was cooperating fully.

If you can take a step back from all of this...

Jones has been an idiot. He's consistently put himself in positions whereby something 'could' go wrong, and inevitably, as with most turds, something has stuck to the fan. Probably.

Anyway, my point is this:

The guy is an idiot, but he has not done anything wrong per-sé in this situation. Would it matter that he didn't tell people he was paying off someone who threatened to shoot his family? Not to me. better safe than sorry, and if you can all get off your high horse for even a micro second, I can guarantee any sane man would never take a chance like that when the consequences are so high. Would Goodell even have asked such a question? I don't actually believe he would, and I would imagine that even if he did, he would have the kudos to keep the answer private. If you come out and say 'one of our players gave cash to a guy for protection' you automatically make every other player in the league even more of a target for would be gangsters.

So yeah, if Goodell throws Jones out of the league, he has to do it in a fair manner. It shouldn't be some arbitrary judgement on the guy's overall character. If Goodell sits down and says 'hey, we asked you not to do this, but you've consistently done it anyway' then he will be making a considered judgement using a lot more evidence than we have at our disposal.

Some of the great NFL players have been guys who by today's definition would be 'turds'. We would never have had a Lawrence Taylor in the league if we could scrutinise him like we can today's players. More would be the pity in my opinion.

Any idiot could see before Pacman was drafted that he was a moron and a thug. The Titans should have known he was going to blow up sooner or later (hell, I did, and if I did then they damn well better have), but now they're just hands off like they had no idea this was going to happen. Well, hands off except for trying to get a draft pick out of him.

Any team that takes Pacman now is beyond stupid.

Come on Florio. There are far more unsavory characters in the NFL. Spouse beaters, repeat drug offenders, etc. Can you say Ray Lewis?

This is no reason not to reinstate him. Also, he has already sat out a year due to the Vegas thing. I don't think you can do anything more than give him a 4 game for next year.

Florio I agree with all of these trusting gentlemen above. I mean it says right there in the article that according to PacMan he was being extorted because this thug was going to kill his mom and daughter. Since PacMan has absolutely no reason to lie here I have to agree. It's not like there would be no shot in hell of him ever playing football again if the commissioner found out he was paying a guy to stay quiet. Or he could even face jail time if the cops found out he knew the Ghetto Fabulous shooter in the first place. Seriously what reason do we have to not believe PacMan? He has been such a fine upstanding citizen in his life so far. I mean this article says that is the reason he is paying and as far as I am concerned, and obviously all of the super intelligent gentlemen above are concerned, anything that is read on the internet must be true. PacMan should win the Nobel Prize, be re-instated to football and be given a raise for picking out a guy in a lineup. He has finally brought a man, who if he just would have been honest from the get go would have been in jail months ago, to justice. Do I think it is funny this is all happening right before he is trying to get re-instated? Not me.

Go PacMan. I hope you are traded to the CowGirls. No one deserves you more then the fine people of Dallas who still believe Mr. Irvin was really carrying that crack pipe for a friend. I hope the next crime you commit is the huge signing bonus you steal from one Mr. Jerry Jones. The new catch phrase in Dallas will soon be "Getcha popcorn and bullet proof vests ready". Sickening!

Seriously why is everyone freaking out about this? You guys see Pacman’s name and just immediately react against him.

If anyone had actually read the link provided it clearly says that he and his family were threatened by this gentleman, and forced to pay, otherwise they’d be shot.

What the hell did Pacman actually do wrong here? I see no one praising him for actually picking this guy out of a line-up. Why not?

And the unsavory behavior of one Mr. Adam Jones continues unchecked. Can the Commish just please put an end to this nonsense and just bar the guy for good already?

Why wait for him to do more of the stupid conduct he already has a well-established reputation for?

This tree has born enough poison fruit already. Just be done with "Pac Man" once and for all.

It says in the article that if he refused to pay, the accused shooter would "go after Jones, his mother and daughter."

I don't think he was extorting him by threatening to release information. It sounds like Jones must have owed him money and the guy was threatening to go after his family if he didn't pay.

Why do you keep dragging Pacman through the mud? So what if he paid some guy off to not shoot him? I would too. Nobody likes to be shot. Leave Pacman alone. He is trying to get back into the league, and bringing this stuff up may keep him from making a living. Do some real reporting like "How's Eli's marriage going" or "How much does Charlie Weis' FUPA weigh". Real investigative stuff. Trying to boost your ego by trying to bring down poor Pacman is BS. He is pure class and personally what I hope my children grow up to be.

Ummmmm I usually have empathy for NFL players and second chances if other lives (or animals' lives) are not put at risk, but obviously I hate Pacman because a man was in part due to his alleged repeated and irresponsible actions.

Saying that, the above posting is not a reason not to institute Pacman. If one is blackmailed, not everyone is smart enough to know that the opposing party is the one that will be in trouble, not you. It's not a good feeling. And Pacman's response regarding that, if it occurred, is just human nature and understandable. That is not a reason not to put him back in the NFL.

There are plenty of other reasons.

I think it's safe to say that plenty of people will have an eye on how the Commish handles Pacman...for those that would like the NFL to actually go back to having some integrity he should continue to drop the hammer on this cockroach....as he's been doing a fairly good job of so far (Vick, Henry, Thurman, etc...). But he needs to realize he has a long ways to go....and to remain steadfast in tossing turds from the League...

I read the article referred to at ESPN. I did not find any mention that the extortion money was paid to keep Edwards from "implicating" Jones. On the contrary, the article quotes the warrant declaration reference to "extortion and 'extortion monies'" implying that Jones was paying off an understood threat.

While it may not be prudent to pay extortion or ransom money, I am at a lost as to how such actions are considered "unsavory" by Florio and thus leading to more disciplinary action from the League. Again, more hysteria and conjecture.

COuld this have been a Don't come kill my ass payment? I don't think paying a guy to not implicate you in a attempted murder rap is going to stick when you go and ID (And LATER Testify) against the Payee. All bets are probably off and the implication would come out. I bet he was threatened. But obviously they knew each other I guess.
