Short term memory loss, anyone? Classic Parcells. Remember, he was 'nearing a deal' with the Atlanta Falcons. A great way to create leverage for striking a better deal elsewhere.

Jake Long=Atlanta Falcons. Bargaining tool, and nothing more.

But, for the $ thing Florio pointed out, isn't there a difference between an offensive lineman and a quarterback? (JaMarcus Russell last year.) And I don't think Tom Condon would pull his name from this ... look what happened with Brady Quinn. It is absolutely in Jake Long's best interest to be the first overall draft pick as opposed to being selected anywhere else, even if the money isn't equivalent to Russell's.

Some say Long won't be as good as Joe Thomas of the Cleveland Browns, though. I'm a little surprised that the Miami Dolphins aren't negotiating with Chris Long. He is astounding on the defensive side of the ball and has the pedigree that has shown overtime to be a good indicator for success if the talent is there.

And here's some trivia: Jake Long gave up one sack on the year. Against whom? Vernon Gholston.

"Please stop with the Parcells lovefest"

I don't know about that... but history has shown he can take bad teams and get them into the playoffs quickly. The Pats to the Super Bowl in 3 years, the Jets to the AFC championship in 2, and Dallas in the playoffs 1 year after 3 straight 5-11 seasons.

Not to mention the numerous pro bowlers from last year's NFC squad that Parcells added to Dallas' team.

Don't forget there buddy, Parcell's isn't coaching this team. Just bringing in the players. Call it a "lovefest" if you want, but Parcells has shown on 3 different occasions that he can turn a team around.

Sticking around to finish the job is another story.

So while you can name 3 or 4 busts, go look at what else Parcells was able to accomplish.

one thing that keeps me wondering is whether they are working out this deal in order to trade the #1 overall pick. if they have a contract in place for jake long it would presumably make him easier to trade on draft day and the fins would know where the ceiling of the draft is so that, if they move down, they would have some sort of idea of what they should pay whoever their pick would be. i don't think it is any secret that kc would love to have this guy anchor a line that very recently was one of the best (if not THE best) lines in the nfl and that now is mediocre at best. if parcells can set the table with the contract and move down to the 5th spot (or whatever - just using kc as an example) he would know about what he will have to pay and the chiefs (or whoever) wouldn't have to worry about a hold-out. food for thought but it is something that i keep thinking about and the more i think about it, the more it seems to make sense that it COULD happen.

Bobby Carpenter is proof that Parcells knows OLBs. Just like Spears is proof that Parcells knows DEs. Just like trading down to take Julius Jones instead of Steven Jackson is proof that he knows RBs.

The guy's draft record the past five years is pretty abysmal except when he chooses high enough to select the highest rated prospect at a position (see Newman at #5, Ware at #11). What gets lost in all of this is the last time Parcells actually won anything was almost two decades ago. He hasn't won a playoff game in ten years. He's been through three teams since then, and in 11 years of coaching he's won exactly one conference title -- roughly on par with what you would expect from sheer probability.

Please stop with the Parcells lovefest.

All this seems to hinge on the quite large 'if' regarding the 'fins being interested in Gholston.

As usual, Florio is 100% right (except for his recent Olbermann comments...that guy is a tool).

There is no way the Dolphins will officially sign anyone until Friday night at the earliest. And knowing Parcells, the more I read "they are close" with Jake Long, the more I know he ain't the pick.

Wait who says that Chris Long is the Dolphins top prospect. Just because some guy on TV says Chris Long is the top guy. There is a reason Parcells has taken 4 different franchises to the playoffs and has won super bowls. He knows what he is doing if he wants Jake Long then that is who I want. If Parcells thinks Chris Long can't play OLB as well as Jake can play T in the NFL guess what he CAN'T. Parcells is a great judge of talent at the OLB position. If you doubt that then please the careers of Lawrence Taylor, Willie McGinest, and the play of DeMarcus Ware. We still do have Porter an Taylor playing OLB for us correct or did something get passed me? I know Taylor wants to be traded but will he be?

I don't trust any of it. Parsells and Ireland have been so close to the vest about EVERYTHING since they took over it makes no sense for them to be so "open" now. I keep hearing Gholston and Jake Long's name but nothing from the pic that makes the most sense...Chris Long. If you are a betting man, put your money there. Too many OT in this draft to worry about taking one "first".

I predict nobody wants the #1 pick, and thus nobody will make a selection this year. No one wants to be the first dorky couple on the dance floor during prom, unless you're Lenny P., and you never went to prom in the first place.

I find it amusing that $60,000,000.00 is considered crappy these days

One question that I continue to ask myself, Why is the Dolphins going to sign their guy in the early part of the week? Perhaps, Bill Parsmells is establishing market value for Jake Long. I would work off the contract from Joe Thomas' deal from last year at around $24 million guaranteed. Get Long to commit, and then go to Gholston... get him to accept less. You've established their market value, and now you can go to Chris Long and pay him more money in guarantees >$25 and pay that to Chris Long... this enables the Phins to get their #1 prospect, pay him the #1 contract while establishing the #2 and #3 prospects value. This prevents Bill Parsmells from receiving the "He got the guy who was willing to take less" label. What do you think of that?

I agree. Who is Tom Curran and who is giving him the tip (pinch-it). If the phins are going to PR this thing, it would be Mort breaking the story, not some guy who covers the Olympics, College Sports, Baseball, etc. If Condon is going to slip something to the press, he's going to release contract parameters to beat the phins to the punch about figures because he's the least likely to afford a PR hit with rookie contracts. My guess is that some team other than the phins is trying to manipulate Gholston to jump up and take the crappiest deal imaginable. The only other thing I can figure is that Parcels is manipulating the media to call out to Gholston or the other Long to phone in (or home) w/take me for less!

I agree. Who is Tom Curran and who is giving him the tip (pinch-it). If the phins are going to PR this thing, it would be Mort breaking the story, not some guy who covers the Olympics, College Sports, Baseball, etc. If Condon is going to slip something to the press, he’s going to release contract parameters to beat the phins to the punch about figures because he’s the least likely to afford a PR hit with rookie contracts.
