Last month, the Philadelphia Eagles made a run at two of the dozen (or so) elite NFL receivers who command the attention of at least two defensive players whenever on or anywhere close to the field.
The Eagles were unable to lure Randy Moss, a free agent at the time, away from New England. Efforts to swing a trade with the Cardinals for receiver Larry Fitzgerald were unsuccessful as well.
But there’s another high-end wideout who might ultimately be coming to Philly.
GCobb.com (which has been nailing many an Eagles scoop this offseason) says that Eagles radio analyst Mike Quick says he thinks that the Eagles “will make a major move” at receiver this week.
Apparently, the Cowboys and the Redskins are in the hunt as well.
Williams, one of the rare first-round wideouts chosen by the Lions during the past decade who has turned into a solid player, is signed through 2008. But with receiver Calvin Johnson, the No. 2 overall selection in 2007, entering his second year and commanding a big chunk of cap space, the Lions have to ask themselves whether they should get try to get value for Williams now, or face losing him after the coming season. (They could also put the franchise tag on him and then trade him, but they would need roughly $10 million in cap space on the books in order to carry his one-year franchise tender until a trade would be worked out.)
For the reported suitors, the stakes are very high. Whoever doesn’t get Williams will have to face him twice per year.

The Eagles fans are delusional.
There is no way Roy goes to Philly. Donna McNabb
can’t throw the ball beyond 10 yards without skipping
it in the dirt. Philly fans might as well give up.
There only chance at winning a superbowl was when McNabb
couldn’t take the pressure and yacked behind center.

because LJ makes a lot of really good catches also. The fumbles are memorable but there haven’t been that many. Franchising him this year was the smart move.

LJ Smith has like one regular season fumble in the last 4 years or something like that. LJ’s “fumbling problem” is a myth. He had one game where he fumbled twice in the 04 playoffs and because of the way he carries the ball, he’s been labelled fumble-prone ever since.
And while LJ is definitely inconsistant, he’s a legitimate threat at TE that you have to account for, and his blocking has improved tremendously.

@Super Florio
I completely agree that he is neither the second coming of Christ, or the TE of the future, but he has always been a good target for McNabb. If he is healthy, it is still an upgrade from last year.

“Why are all these Eagles fans touting LJ Smith like he’s the second coming of Christ? I guess those fumbles mean nothing.”
He has 3 career fumbles. Witten has 3. Cooley has 4. Shockey has 5. Do some research.

Spelling and grammar aside;
Javon Walker was coming off of ACL surgery.
TO was a free agent.
Randy Moss didnt do anything for 2 years and had a no trade clause which essentially handcuffed the Raiders. Also it was a trade with the Raiders, enough said. You forget to mention that the Raiders did give up a 1st and LB Napolean Harris to get Moss in the first place. Sure they used that pick to get Troy Williamson, but they did get a first for Randy.

TO was not a free agent when the Eagles traded for him. His agent didn’t file the papers that voided the final year of his contract.

The Lions will move Roy. He wants out. He thinks Calvin will be given his job. That’s his motivation to act like an idiot. If anything, McDonald cut into Roy’s catches. Not Calvin. He was too busy chawing vicodin.
Roy isnt fast, and if Philly or whoever thinks he will be a field stretcher for long, they arent paying attention.

Who’s touting L J Smith? Hes a bum once again it calls into question Andy(Times Yours)Reid’s drafting ability. What would you do take a TE from Rutgers (L J) or a TE from Tennessee (Jason Witten)? Also for a guy who is pass happy he hasn’t drafted a #1 receiver for Donovan. The EAGLES receiving corps has been a train wreak since he got here. But look what happened when they got a true WR in TO they went to the Super Bowl oh my bad (The Big Game) even if they did sell their soles to the Devil to get there! Or they should have payed him and keep him happy(Oh did I say that out loud) . So at least it says something that they know they need a real #1 WR . And if they need me too I’ll drive L J back too Rutgers and toss him in the Raritan.

Williams wont wind up in an Eagle uniform. Their biggest chip to trade is Lito Sheppard, and the Lions are pretty well stocked in the secondary after adding Bodden and Kelly in the offseason. Would the Lions do roy for the Eagles #1? Probably not. They’d likely want a player in return, and now that we know the Eagles rivals would be involved in the bidding, they’d likely get it to.
More likely than not I could see the Eagles trading for Ocho Stinko. Cinnci has a need for secondary help, and I doubt whether the Eagles would have to cough up a #1 in addition to Sheppard.

folks he’s not coming to philly, for a few reasons.
apparently the lions don’t believe they have a need at cb. plus, i think lito is penciled in as trade bait to jump up to grab the no.3 tackle, probably otah. i don’t think big red wants to use lito get a wr because as we all know, the game revolves around the tackle position in his mind. he doesn’t believe that when you’re a passing offense that it’s a good idea to sink your assets into the guys that actually catch the ball.
i’m the minority with this, but i also believe the interest in fitzgerald and moss was baloney. those were two guys they knew weren’t going anywhere so they made the phone calls to shut the qb up.
also, if it’s true dallas is interested, 2 1st round picks gives you a lot more creativity to deal. it wouldn’t surprise me to see jones offer a 1st and 2nd for williams, and then take a corner or another wr with their other first they keep. or, ask the lions to give roy williams and their second round pick to dallas for both of dallas’ first. something like that.
lastly, this isn’t exactly gcobb’s report. he’s saying he heard mike quick say something. big deal. i don’t think color commentator mike quick is in the war room with andy and the scouts.
i think this is a whole lotta nothing.

If the Lions wouldn’t take the Eagles #1 pick for Williams, then Millen should be fired. And if the Eagles offered the 19th pick for Williams, then Banner and Reid should also be fired. Every time I see Williams play, he drops more balls than he catches. Lito to the Lions doesn’t make sense either given their offseason moves and division mentality. It’s the NFC North people, there’s not a team in the division that can throw the ball with Favre now retired. And the Tampa 2 doesn’t require good corners, just good tacklers playing corner. I think the major move at receiver for the Eagles is going to be Ocho in a 3-way trade with the Jets involving Robertson. And if it takes Sheppard and a #1 pick to get Stinko, smart Eagles fans will mourn while the idiots celebrate.

The Eagles would have to trade the 19th pick of course to get roy, and they wont do that. they may try to trade up, but they wont draft a reciever in the 1st round. Runyan and Thomas are both aging, so expect an OT. Expect the Eagles to go for an OT 1st round WR 2nd round DE 3rd Safety 4th. They definately need a tall WR in the endzone because of their lack of conversions in the redzone. I wish theyd get Hardy because hes so tall and just another plaxico, which is wat we need most, but they wont. its just not andys style

We in Philly are the most passionate and among the most educated fans in the country. How do we overvalue Lito Sheppard? The fact that he is a pro bowl player means he is tough to overvalue. Roy Williams is unhappy in his situation which may mean problems for the lions, detroit fans dont want to deal with a problematic wr….. (we have experience with that. cough cough TO). I may be slow but I know if you aren’t happy with your job you tend not to try as hard or preform as well. Roy Williams would be a nice fit in an eagles jersey, he would free up Kevin Curtis who is pretty fast and can catch. if TO made stinkson look like a decent reciever Roy could make Kevin Curtis look like a pro bowler, but I would rather have ocho stinko, headache or not he is a better wr thank Roy. Also Please do not stereotype philly fans as retards…..

Mid to late round picks dont have nearly the value as the top 10 picks. If any eagles fans think Litosheppard and #19 let alone #19 by itself is too much for roy williams then you think like andy reid and thats why your lovely city can expect another mediocre season.
#19 alone IMO is not enough for a reciever of williams caliber. The redskins would trade their #21 in a second with the possibly of a 3rd attached because this is a young proven reciever of almost star quality who doesnt seem to have the whole prima donna thing going on. That is truely hard to comeby as teams that have recievers like that tend to hold onto them.
Dear Matt Millen,
Package Roy Williams up in a deal and send him to the redskins via Fedex. In return will shall grant you the wish of the #19th overall pick and throw in a 3rd, BUT ONE TIME SPECIAL OFFER #19 and #5th round and we will slap Matt Millen rulez! stickers on all of detroit’s fedex packages for all of the 2008 football season.
Best Wishes,
Daniel Snyder
